Lakes 3, Timberline 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19)

(Lacey, WA) In the 2nd match of the season for teams the Timberline Blazers traveled to Lakes to face the Lancers. Lakes would sweep the Blazers 3-0 in the early season showdown. Thursday night was show down #2 and both teams came in deadlocked at 10-2 and tied for 2nd behind undefeated North Thurston.

This time it was on Timberline’s home court and a chance to square the season series.

The Lakes Lancers had another idea though and that was to extend their winning streak over the Blazers. Leading 9-7 in the 1st set the Lancers made the first big move when Elira Blanchard reeled off 3 straight points  with the help of a great front line and a booming kill from Marley Alefaio. The two teams would then trade points with the difference never changing from 5-7 points.

The next burst was a pair of devastating boom shots from Kerra Tualamali’i to push the score to 23-16.  The Lancers just kept the Blazers at arms length and won it comfortably, 25-19.

In set 2, it looked like the Lancers were going to blow the Blazers out building a massive 19-7 lead. Karsyn Alefaio fired off 8 straight points in this run. Big blocks and slicing defensive returns from her sister Marley, Jennysis Solomua, Moki Filiaga and great sets and saves from Blanchard pushed the Blazers back on their heels. It also included a remarkable rally that extended the Lancers rally.

Timberline then played their best for the next 13 or so points. It began with Destiny Mars scoring 3, then Jovie Lind with 2 and holding Lakes to 22. Kinley Smith took-over serving for the Blazers trailing 22-16 and fired off 5 points with Smith delivering a couple pounding shots into the deep corners and pulled within 1 point trailing 22-21.

The Lancers then won the next point to go up 23-21 and Moki Filiaga finished off the set and the Lancers had denied the Blazers a set win for the 5th straight time this season.

Timberline was in a must win situation in the 3rd set and came out looking like they were going to get that 1st set win over the Lancers and pushing a 4th set. The Blazers led 10-5 and were playing with renewed confidence while the Lancers were off their game for the first time.

But the ever-reliable Elira Blanchard turned the set around with a 4 point run and 2 aces. The next turn was Tualamali’i’s 3 points with an ace and another fabulous rally that seemed to really take any momentum away from the Blazers as the Lancers finished off the match with a 25-19 win and swept the Blazers for the 2nd time and took control of 2nd place in the Puget Sound league.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match came down to Blanchard, Marley Alefaio and Kerra Tualamali’i and we went with Tualamali’i in a close decision.

Lakes improves to 11-2 while Timberline drops to 10-3. North Thurston swept Peninsula so the Rams have a tight hold on 1st in the Nisqually division of the PSL. Full standings are listed below the Video Highlights.
