Tumwater 3, Black Hills 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-13)
(Tumwater, WA) The top two teams in the 2A Evergreen Conference for volleyball met at Tumwater High School for a showdown. Black Hills came into the game 6-7 overall, but is in second place in the league. Tumwater came in 12-2 and 7-0 in league. They were on a seven-game win streak, and each of those wins came by a sweep. Tumwater has shown complete dominance all season, and its powerhouse offense came in hot to face the Wolves. Black Hills themselves were on a 3-game win streak and had momentum coming into the game as well. Cross-town rivals faced off in a great night of volleyball.
Set One
Tumwater got off to a great start early as Lalie Betschart would begin the game with an ace. Paige Henderson would get her night started as well with two blocks and points back to back. Black Hills held their own and got the game within two with the help of Oralia Mike and Emmaline Thompson. With the game being 8-6, Tumwater would get the ball with Bailey Broeker at the serving line. An onslaught of offense began for the T-Birds, as they scored ten straight points, with four of those points coming from aces by Broeker. Some miscommunications and errors from the Wolves became their undoing, and while they tried to fight back, the damage was already done. Tumwater would take set one 25-10 and take the 1-0 set lead.
Set Two
Set two was much better for the Wolves, and they limited the mistakes that held them back in set one. Paige Henderson, however, immediately went to work on Black Hills. She started the set with 3 straight kills and a block that put Tumwater up 4-0. Tumwater did not slow down as Henderson along with Tove Hugus as well as great defense from the backline dominated the Wolves. Black Hills scored points here and there but could not overcome the front line of the T-Birds. Tumwater jumped to a ten point lead and didn’t let it go the remainder of the game. The Thunderbirds went on to win set two 25-15 and was one set away from a sweep.
Set Three
Set three again was a hot start for the T-Birds. They came out and scored six straight points to begin the set with Lalie Betschart serving. Another big deficit was created for Black Hills that was just too much. Chloe Henderson, Paige Henderson, and Tove Hugus all had a part to play on the early swing for Tumwater. T-Birds kept the lead handidly the rest of the set and maintained a comfortable distance from Black Hills on the scoreboard. Tove Hugus came alive in this set and had 3 kills to put a dagger into the Wolves. Tumwater went on win the set 25-13 and complete the sweep. Tumwater continues their win streak to eight and remains one of the teams to beat in the 2A classification.
MVP and Stats
Our Thorbecks MVP of the game went to Paige Henderson who had 11 kills and 4 blocks. She was a monster on the frontline and was the biggest contributor to the T-Bird offense. Other notable names included Bailey Broeker who had 5 aces on the game and helped Tumwater score ten straight point in set one. Tove Hugus also had a good game, totaling 5 kills and great defense as well. Lalie Betschart was outstanding on defense all night for Tumwater at the Labero position.
Black Hills’ Piper Maning had a very good defensive showing throughout the game for the Wolves. Chiara Capezio and Lilly Worthen both had productive days on offense. Oralia Mike and Emmaline Thompson had good nights as well on both sides of the ball.
Tumwater will be on the road in their next game to take on Centralia on Monday, October 27th with a 7:00pm start time. Black Hills will face Aberdeen at home on Tuesday, October 28th with a 7:00pm start time
