(Onalaska, WA) It was the regular season finale for the Toledo Riverhawks and Onalaska Loggers on Wednesday night and Senior Night for the Loggers but that was not the biggest story surrounding the Central 2B League matchup. This match would decide the league champion as a win or draw would give Toledo the league title while Onalaska needed a win to steal the C2BL crown. A loss could also drop Ony to third place which would force them to play on Tuesday in an elimination game to open the District Tournament instead of earning a first round bye and advancing to the double elimination portion of the bracket.

Toledo 1, Onalaska 1

Before the match began, Onalaska honored their five seniors as Jaelyn Auman, MacKenzie Nederlander, Kate Zandell, Randi Haight, and Kaiyah Sandridge were recognized for their hard work and commitment to the program.

As the match began both teams started a feeling out phase as they did not want to make an early mistake to fall behind right away. Both squads had the centerpieces of their attack as Peyton Holter as the focal point for the Riverhawks while Kaiyah Sandridge was the target for the Loggers. Toledo made an early substitution as Georgia Chase entered the match and moved to the backline to send Kailea Lairson into a midfield role for the Riverhawks. That seemed to flip a switch for Toledo as they got on the front foot and pushed the pace, getting higher quality looks and more looks as well. Toledo’s attacks of Xtyn Norberg, Aspen Cooper, and Onica Chase couldn’t get a shot by Onalaska goalie Emily Hicks.

Hicks had some good help from her defense with captain Jaelyn Auman leading on that end of the field. Maci Reid also played really well on the backline to go along with Reese Marshall and Ady Rimmereid. On the attack, Onalaska had Sandridge leading the way with Leighton Underhill playing very well in the midfield as well as the always aggressive Kate Zandell. In the 36th minute, Onalaska jumped on an opportunity as an Onalaska throw in deflected off of a Toledo defender and was run down by Greta Oien. The 8th grader placed a perfect shot over the Toledo keeper to make it 1-0 Onalaska in the 35th minute and that score held into halftime.

Things continued to build for Toledo in the second half and they suffocated the Onalaska defense. They kept the pressure off of their goalie Ivana Cabrera as Georgia Chase, Zaya Norberg, and Hallie Cournyer shutdown the few Logger attacks that they could put together. They kept pushing the ball deeper and deeper into their attacking third until a foul gave them a set piece opportunity. Kailea Lairson would just take a shot instead and placed it perfectly to equalize the match in the 59th minute, making it 1-1.

One more goal would have taken all the pressure off of Toledo but they possessed the ball so well in the second half knowing they just needed a draw to win the league. They continued to frustrate the Loggers while firing multiple great shots on Emily Hicks. The sophomore keeper played lights out and came up with save after save to give Onalaska a chance. They just couldn’t put a run together however and Toledo would settle for the 1-1 draw to make the Riverhawks league champions.

Our Thorbeckes MVPs of the match went to Kailea Lairson of Toledo and Emily Hicks for Onalaska. Lairson scored the game-tying goal that ended up earning Toledo the league title in the second half and was the key piece to transition the Riverhawks from defense to offense. After Lairson moved up after starting on the backline, Toledo found much better opportunities in the attacking third. Emily Hicks was fantastic in goal for Onalaska with a number of tough saves to give the Loggers a shot. Without the sophomore goalie, this match could have ended up being 3-1 or even worse for Onalaska ending in a loss instead of a draw.

Toledo finishes the regular season 10-3-3 and 7-0-2 in C2BL play as league champions. Onalaska finishes 8-7-1 overall and 7-1-1 in league play. Both begin the District tournament next week and you can see the matchups down below.
