Lincoln (Tacoma) Abes 48, Timberline Blazers 15

(Tacoma, WA) With a trip to the Round of 32 on the line, the Lincoln Abes and Timberline Blazers were hoping to continue their seasons. Timberline won just one game last year and was awfully close to being a six-win team. Lincoln has consistently churned out State Playoff berths under head coach Masaki Matsumoto, and they want this year to be no different. With each team having its back against the rain-soaked walls in this loser-out game, their seasons hung in the balance for a Halloween night fight.

Lincoln received the opening kickoff, and despite two penalties before their first offensive snap, the Abes’ rushing attack led the way. They marched down the field behind their powerful running back, Jadeon Scranton Jr. He capped off the drive with a 13-yard touchdown, muscling his way through the defense for the score. Timberline’s Caleb Bacon blocked the extra point as Lincoln led 6-0. Timberline’s offense moved the ball nicely down the field, picking up a pair of first downs. On a trick play, the Blazers threw a deep ball, but Lincoln’s Elijah Carney made a tremendous interception between two Timberline receivers while falling on his seat. Lincoln executed the longest drive of the game, a 12-play, 87-yard drive that took off five and a half minutes. Again, the run game was the main source of offense as Scranton Jr. plunged forward for his second touchdown of the opening quarter, giving the Abes a 13-0 lead.

After a great kickoff return from Keaton Thomas, Timberline faced fourth and four early in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Vongdara dropped back with the blitz on from Lincoln and delivered a strike to Thomas. Thomas broke free for the 28-yard touchdown to make it 13-7 as the Blazers cut into the Lincoln lead. The Abes offense responded with an eight-play drive highlighted by a 12-yard touchdown pass as Sione Kaho lobbed a pass up for Elijah Carney, and he went and got it with a defender all over him. Lincoln led 20-7 with seven minutes left in the second quarter.

Lincoln forced a quick turnover, as Erick Tijiboy picked off a pass downfield to give Lincoln the ball and great field position. Jadeon Scranton Jr. needed just one play to cover 44 yards and get his third touchdown of the first half to make it 27-7. Timberline punted it away on the ensuing drive, and Tyrone Jones nearly ran the punt back the distance, but was pushed about half a foot out before the goal line. Scranton Jr. took the direct snap and scooted into the end zone for Lincoln’s second one-play drive. Timberline once again moved the ball down the field, but time ran out on the Blazers in the first half as Lincoln remained in control with a 34-7 halftime lead.

Timberline opened up the second half on offense, and after a first down, the Blazers fumbled on fourth down. Lincoln drove down the field as Scranton Jr. scored from one yard out again for his fifth touchdown. Two plays later, Timberline was looking for a big play, but Ramon Jones Jr. stepped in front of the pass and took the interception to the end zone for a 58-yard touchdown, and Lincoln led 48-7. After a pair of turnovers, Timberline scored with Cameron Vongdara running it in from six yards out, and he added the two-point conversion. Timberline recovered its onside kick, but time ran out on the Blazers as Lincoln secured the victory, 48-15, to advance to the Round of 32.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Lincoln’s Jadeon Scranton Jr. His sensational five-touchdown performance was one to remember for the senior running back.

Lincoln improves to 6-3 on the season and will play next week in the Round of 32.

Timberline drops to 4-5 overall, and their season comes to a close.
