(Lakewood, WA) Six spots in the WIAA 3A Girls Soccer State Tournament were up for grabs in the District 3 3A Girls Soccer Tournament. The first of those six spots would be earned on Tuesday evening in the first of four quarterfinals on the night as the #5 seed Peninsula Seahawks battled the #4 Enumclaw Hornets. As the two teams took the field at Harry E. Lang Stadium, it felt fitting that a showdown between the Puget Sound League and North Puget Sound League would decide the first of the six spots.

Peninsula got to shake off the rust after not playing a match since October 25th when they opened up the district tournament on November 1st, earning a home victory over River Ridge 3-0. Meanwhile, the wait was much longer for Enumclaw as they entered Tuesday night not playing a match since their regular season finale on October 22nd, a 7-0 win over Kent-Meridian.

Peninsula 3, Enumclaw 1

Peninsula was very aggressive early in this one. Ella Coates was the leader on the attacks as they peppered Enumclaw keeper Kami Bullock with shots early and often. Bullock stood strong as defenders Braidyn Brebner, Bristal Markus, Madison Holden, and Caitlin Madill worked into a groove in the match. It wasn’t a one player show for the Seahawks as Maya Rogers was pressing the action with crosses and took the early corners as well. Nora Sutherland worked well on the right side with Coates but Peninsula couldn’t solve Enumclaw’s defense early.

The Hornets then began to have their own build of play as Clare Largent dropped back to a more defensive mid while Sadie Barrier moved into the attacking mid spot. Sutton Kelsey was the featured piece of the offense for Enumclaw but the Hornets seemed to struggle once they got into the attacking third. Camryn Puryer had a nice run that got the Hornets a great look, but a perfect kick save by Brooklyn Finch kept Hornets off the board. A long ball in the 30th minute would be won by Ella Coates and she beat the defender before firing a shot into the bottom left quadrant of the net. That would be the lone goal of the half as Peninsula led Enumclaw at the midway point, 1-0.

The second half was much more even in terms of possession and looks. The backline of Peninsula stood strong however as the rain started to come down hard in the second 40. Sierra Bierman continued her phenomenal match with Emma Tucker, Alex Cichanski, Brooklyn Mays and Emi Hansonsmith all playing very strong as well to keep pressure off of Brooklyn Finch. A beautiful cross from Maya Rogers would come in the 55th minute and Delia Labowitz would touch the ball into the net while colliding with Kami Bullock for a second goal to put Peninsula up 2-0.

Peninsula began to take control after that and possessed the ball very well. Ella Coates and Maya Rogers pushed the ball up into the attacking third consistently and Delia Labowitz would earn her brace with a second goal in the 64th minute. Enumclaw then began to push the tempo to try to get on the board and a free kick in the 69th minute allowed them to make things interesting. Sutton Kelsey took a shot on goal on the set piece and took advantage of the rain as the ball slid through Finch’s hands for a goal. That would be all Enumclaw could get however as Peninsula held on in the final 10 minutes to defeat Enumclaw 3-1.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match went to Ella Coates for Peninsula. The senior pelted the Enumclaw backline and goal with shots early before finally breaking through with a goal in the 30th minute. She was a speedster with great ball control up the right side of the attack for the Seahawks all match long.

The win clinches a spot in the state tournament for the Peninsula Seahawks and also moves them into the district semifinals. They will take on Gig Harbor on Thursday at 7pm at Harry E. Lang Stadium for a spot in the district championship. Enumclaw is not done yet but the Hornets have to win two matches in a row to get to the state tournament. They will play in a loser out match at Mount Tahoma HS on Thursday at 7:30pm against Kentlake. You can see the entire District 3 3A bracket in the link below.
