(Lakewood, WA) The Gig Harbor Tides and the Bellarmine Lions have played twice this season with the Tides winning the first meeting and the 2nd ending in a draw. The 3rd match had the most on the line with the winner making the district 3 3A semi-finals and earning a berth to the State Tournament. The losing teams season doesn’t end but the road gets tougher because they will play 2 must win consolation matches to get into the State Tournament.
Winner makes it to State
Bellarmine had a majority of the possession early but Bellarmine keeper Charlotte Lamb was blocking shots left and right to keep the Tides at bay.
Gig Harbor broke through in the 26th minute when Ella Conrad booted the ball down the field it took one touch by Elizabeth Hayes and Karin Heikkila ran by the back line and finished the 1 on 1 with Lamb.
The Tides added a 2nd goal in the 37th minute when a shot ricocheted off the post and right to Anne Louden who put it in for the 2-0 halftime lead.
The final goal of the match was scored in the 70th minute on a corner taken by Heikkila through the 18 yard box. Freshman Violet Lester collected the ball and took a hard shot that deflected off Louden standing just in front of Lamb for the 3-0 final.
MVP and UP Next
The Sumner Inn Express MVP went to Anne Louden for the brace and all around good play. Violet Lester and Karin Heikkila were also in the running but the 2nd goal put Louden over the top.
With the win Gig Harbor moves on to the Semis and will play Peninsula on Thursday Nov. 6th with both teams advancing to state. Bellarmine goes to the consolation bracket and plays Timberline at Mt. Tahoma HS in a loser out match. If the Lions win they will play one more match with the winner making the state tournament.
