(Seattle, WA) On Friday night the American League Silver Slugger winners were announced and in no surprise at all the AL’s winner at the catcher position went to the Seattle Mariners Cal Raleigh. Raleigh was the only Mariner to win a Silver Slugger this year and becomes the seventh Mariner ever to win the award and just the third since 2010 with the other two being Nelson Cruz and Julio Rodríguez. He is also the first catcher in franchise history to win the award.

Raleigh was a shoe-in to win this award as it honors the best hitter at each position in each league. Raleigh was so far ahead of the rest of the catchers in baseball let alone the American League. Raleigh finished the season with 60 home runs to lead all of baseball and led the American League in runs batted in with 125 with an OPS on .948. The other two finalists were Shea Langeliers of the Athletics and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals. Those two combined for 61 home runs which emphasizes how impressive Cal’s historic season was.

This is just the first award Raleigh has received after his record-breaking season behind home plate for the Mariners as he broke the single season record for home runs by a catcher, by a Mariner, and by a switch hitter all while catching 1,072 innings plus every inning of the Mariners 12 playoff games. Seattle locked Raleigh up to a six-year, $105 million contract back in March just before the price tag went up with his unprecedented season.

Julio Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco were also finalists for the Silver Slugger award in the outfield and second base but Aaron Judge, Byron Buxton, Riley Greene took the three outfield awards while Jazz Chisholm Jr. won the award for second base. The Seattle Mariners as a team were a finalist with the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays but it was the Yankees to take home that award.

Of course the big conversation centers around Cal Raleigh vs. Aaron Judge for the MVP award as well as Dan Wilson’s nomination for the AL Manager of the Year. Those awards will be announced next week as the Manager of the Year will be announced on Tuesday while the MVP awards will be announced on Thursday.
