Lakes 49, Decatur 7

Lakes continues their amazing season with a win over Decatur to advance to the state tournament. The Lancers came into the game 8-1, fresh off their only loss of the season to Mt. Tahoma, which fueled the team to come out swinging in this game. Decatur came into the game 5-3 and had not allowed a touchdown for three straight games. Both teams have had impressive seasons in their respective leagues, which see some of the top teams in the state. Lakes, however, in the end came out on top with an impressive showing at all levels of the game.

First Half

Lakes got the ball to start the game, and on only the third play, fumbled the ball, which Decatur recovered. Decatur would not capitalize, though, and went three and out to give Lakes the ball right back. QB Jadis Lefono would find Raziah Patterson twice on the drive, once for 19 yards and the other for 15 yards. This would set Lakes up in scoring position, and Lefono would cap the drive off with a 17-yard rushing touchdown to get Lakes on the board. The lancers would lead 7-0 after the first quarter.

Decatur would calm things down on their next drive and get all the way down to the 7-yard line. A costly fumble, however, cost the Gators the drive and the possession. The Lancers responded with a 41-yard reception from Lefono to Ean Owens, which again put Lakes in position to score. A few plays later, Korben Reed found his way into the endzone with an 8-yard rushing touchdown. Decatur started their next drive well with a 31-yard catch and run from Scottie Dinwiddie. They would be forced to turn the ball over on downs after relentless pressure from the Lancer defense. Lefono, on the next possession, went right back to Ean Owens for a 34-yard catch. Then Lefono would find Corey Irish in the end zone for the 30 yard touchdown pass.

Decatur put together their best drive of the night after starting with great field position after the kickoff. Antoine Williams found Devin Coaogdan on a short pass which Caoagdan then broke free for the 25-yard touchdown. Lakes would get the ball with just seconds left in the half. The Lancers took the risk and gave the ball to Korben Reed with one second left on the block. Reed hid behind his blockers before bursting through the hole finding open space. No one would catch Reed and the half would come to a close off a 58-yard touchdown run from Reed. Lakes entered halftime leading 28-7.

Second Half

Tragedy would strike again for Decatur as they would fumble on their opening drive and give the red hot Lakes the ball. Penalties would and a sack would result in Lakes punting the ball away for the first time in the game. A beautiful punt from Lee Snyder got the ball down at the 4-yard line for Decatur. The Gators went three and out and punted from their own end zone. Lakes started with an amazing field position, and in a couple of plays, Lefono found Owens for the 24-yard touchdown pass. Lakes led 35-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Decatur, on their next drive, would be forced to punt. They ran a fake punt that was unsuccessful and again gave the Lancers the ball with good field position. The Lancers took advantage and gave the ball back to Korben Reed, who made his way into the end zone for the 14-yard touchdown. A live ball on the kickoff was recovered by Lakes, who took back over possession inside the ten-yard line. QB Koi Calhoun came in to relieve Lefono and instantly threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Amiri Jones. This put the game into a running clock, and time ran down to put the game away. The Lancers defeated Decatur 49-7 and advanced to the state tournament while Decatur’s season came to a close.
