(Sumner, WA) The Sumner Spartans hosted the Defending State Champion Lake Stevens Vikings in the first round of the 4A girl’s soccer state tournament. The two teams had a combined 2 losses on the season and have allowed 8 goals each. Sumner comes in as the 8 seed and are looking to advance past the second round where they lost last season. The Vikings played in the 8 and 9 match up last year as the 8 seed and eventually won the title.

The speed of the game from the start was fast. There wasn’t the usual first 10 minutes of feeling each other out; it was petal to the metal from the opening whistle. The Spartans had several shots from distance but were turned away by Viking’s keeper Tessa Anastasi.

The Vikings got on the board first in the 27th minute. Keira Isabelle Tupua took the corner kick and Sumner’s keeper Devon Bankers got both hands on the ball and tried to lift it over the crossbar but the ball went straight up in the air. Noelani Tupua then pounced with a header that hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and only score in the first half. Anastasi ended up with 7 saves in the first half and  Bankers had 3. Lake Stevens had 4 first half corners to Sumner’s 1.

Halftime Lake Stevens 1 Sumner 0

Lake Stevens struck again in the 58th on a shot from just outside of the 18 yard box by Carley Robertson. The ball sliced through the congested box and by the time Bankers could react it was too late.

The Vikings sealed the game in the 72nd with a hard shot from Noelani Tupua.

The Spartans put on a flurry of shots but couldn’t find the back of the net. Sumner finished with 6 corners to Lake Stevens 1. Tessa Anastasi finished with 11 saves for the Vikings and Devon Bankers had 7 saves for the Spartans.

MVP and UP Next

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Noelani Tupua for the brace and overall great play throughout the match. Anastasi was a close second.

With the loss Sumner’s season comes to an end at 13-2-3. Lake Stevens is now 17-1-1 and will face #1 seed Issaquah on Nov. 15th.
