O’dea 49, Ferndale 0
The number one-seeded O’Dea Fighting Irish look to be the best team in 3A after an outstanding display of football against the #16 seed in Ferndale. The defending state champions came to make a statement and prove why they are the favorite to go back-to-back. After an opening week loss to Graham Kapowisn, O’Dea has been flawless with dominant victory after dominant victory. The winningest coach in Washington History, Monte Kohler, is looking for a state championship repeat, and he is now one step closer to the title. Ferndale put up a great fight, but the depth and talent of the Fighting Irish proved to be too much.
First Half
The O’Dea defense started out strong by forcing a punt on Ferndale’s opening drive. Then, on their first drive of the game, it only took two plays to reach the end zone. A 57-yard catch and run from Giulio Banchero, thrown by Hutton Leverette, set up a 12-yard touchdown run from J Shaun Wilson. O’Dea would force another punt and again make quick work of a touchdown with the 57-yard touchdown reception from Ray Clark III. O’Dea’s defense continued to dominate as they would force a fumble, which was recovered by Ray Clark III, and then score within moments with a 43-yard touchdown run from Peyton Egan. O’Dea would enter the second quarter leading 21-0.
The second quarter was no different for the Fighting Irish. They would get the ball back with great field position and end the drive with a 25-yard touchdown run from J Shaun Wilson and his second score of the day. Ferndale would get possession but end up throwing a 45-yard pick-six to Timo Sousou to give O’Dea the five-touchdown lead. The O’Dea defense then forced a three-and-out and again J Shaun Wilson found his way in for a 31-yard touchdown and the hat trick. Ferndale would punt the ball away on their next drive and in just a few plays, J Andre Castillo bursted through for a 54-yard touchdown run. O’dea entered the half leading 49-0. It only took 15 offensive plays in total in the half to score six touchdowns as well as a defensive score. An absolute masterclass in football from the Fighting Irish
Second Half
With running clock in effect for the second half, the time flew by. The backups came in for O’Dea to start the second half and the starters stayed on the field for Ferndale. Ferndale’s defense looked much improved in the second half and left O’dea scoreless and even forced a fumble. They were not able to capitalize though and both teams could not reach the end zone in the final two quarters. Ferndale put up a great effort and their defense started to make some big plays but not enough to overcome the defending champions. O’Dea would win the game and move on in the state tournament to face the winner of White River or Sedro-Wooley next week
