(Sumner, WA) The Defending 4A Champion Sumner Spartans hosted the Richland Bombers in a #5 vs #12 matchup. Richland finished 2nd in the Mid-Columbia Conference with an 8-2 record. Sumner finished 2nd in the SPSL North with a 7-3 record.

Sumner ran the ball early and often with lead back Lance McGee. McGee ran the ball twice on the first drive; the 2nd carry was for 44 yards and a touchdown. After a bad punt gave Sumner the ball at the 41 of Richland it was McGee again this time from 23 yards out. Both teams punted on their next possession. The Bombers next drive ended with a Elias Tulifua interception and return to the Richland 36 yard line. After a pass to Braylon Pope got them to the 1 yard line it was McGee that punched it in for the 21-0 lead. McGee scored his last touchdown with 5:19 to go in the half, this one a tackle shedding 22 yard score.

The Spartans next touchdown came through the air on a beautiful 39 yard pass from Nate Donovan to Braylon Pope. It looked like that was going to be the last score of the half but a crazy turn of events with no time on the clock saw Owen Tobin scoop up a fumble and return it for the 42-0 halftime Sumner Lead.

Halftime Sumner 42 Richland 0

The 40 point lead led to a running clock in the second half. Sumner’s last touchdown of the game was a 36 yard run by Israel Nabors. This is where you have to respect the heart of the Bombers down 49 they kept driving forward. After forcing a fumble and taking over at the Spartan 12 it was Micah Mayer running in a 6 yard score. Richland scored again in the 4th quarter on a 2 yard run by quarterback Jackson Woodard. The Spartans won 49-14 and are one step closer to defending their title.

MVP and Up next

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Lance McGee who finished the game with 14 carries for 166 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sumner is now 8-3 on the season and they host #13 Glacier Peak in the next round. The loss ends the Bombers season with an 8-3 record.
