(Honolulu, HI) The Saint Martin’s Saints Men’s Basketball team tipped off the season in Hawai’i for the GNAC-PacWest Conference Challenge. Like the women, the men won both games in a pair of close games.
Facing Westmont in the season-opener, offense dominated the game for both sides. Five Saints ended the game in double figures, and Saint Martin’s poured in 14 threes. Saint Martin’s held a slight lead of 41-40 at the half. In the second half, Saint Martin’s scored 55 points and outlasted Westmont. The Saints used some clutch free-throw shooting to secure the win, going 11-15 from the charity stripe in the second half. Saint Martin’s won 96-88 to get their first win of the year. Kaden Hansen led all scorers with 26 points and went 6-11 from downtown. Dae’Kown Watson chipped in 17 points, and Diego Trejo-Delgado dropped 14 points and 11 rebounds. Patrick Kilfoil had 13 points, seven assists, and five boards, while Mark Clegg Jr. added 11 points and eight rebounds.
In their second game, the Saints went up against Hawai’i Hilo. Saint Martin’s led at the half, 40-34, as Dae’Kown Watson scored 19 points in the first half. Saint Martin’s was outscored by four points in the second half but held on for a 70-68 victory and stopped Hawai’i Hilo on the last possession. The Saints shot nearly 80% from the free-throw line, going 23-29. Despite Hawai’i Hilo shooting 50% from the floor, the Saints still managed to pull off the win. Kaden Hansen led all scorers again with 23 points and 8-8 shooting from the free-throw line. Dae’Kwon Watson had 21 points and a game-high four steals. Mark Clegg Jr. pulled down 16 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds, as Hawai’i Hilo had just seven offensive rebounds as a team.
The Saints will remain in Hawai’i to face Hawai’i Pacific on Tuesday before coming back for a pair of home games next weekend against The Evergreen State and Douglas College.
