State Championship

#1 Crosspoint Christian 1, #3 Freeman 0

Defending B girls soccer state champions in the Freeman Scotties knew that they had quite the challenge on their hands as they battled the Crosspoint Christian Wildcats in a battle of East vs. West with the title on the line.

Crosspoint looked to be pretty comfortable coming out of the gates in the championship match and they looked to overwhelm Freeman early with the dynamic attack of Kaylee Ajanovic and Brooke Berens. Freeman’s defense was strong however as Avery Gass and Paige Vinson tried to hold down the fort in the early going.

In the 36th minute, Freeman took a throw in that was chipped into the air. Rylee Phillips headed it into the middle of the field where Brooke Berens tried to settle it to take a shot. The ball continued to bounced but Berens squared it up anyway just inside the 18. A perfect strike would find the back of the net as Berens and here teammates got celebrate a 1-0 lead at halftime for Crosspoint Christian.

Freeman would desperately need to get one of the most prolific goal scorers in the state going as Rylee Russell would try to get the Scotties offense going. Russell would lead some strong attacks for Freeman as they looked to equalize this one in the second half. Freshman keeper Valea Wasson would hold her ground as the defense of the Wildcats led by Lucia Wasson and Mary Scripps kept their young goalie from getting too much action.

Defense was the story of the second half as the Scotties defense kept them within just a single goal in the back 40 minutes. The only problem was, Crosspoint’s defense was just as good and they never allowed the Scotties to find the equalizer. A new year resulted in new champions as Crosspoint Christian downed the defending champions in Freeman, 1-0.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match went to Brooke Berens for her wonderful goal that resulted in a state title for Crosspoint Christian.

The state title was the fourth state title for the Crosspoint Christian Wildcats and their second in the last three seasons. The other two titles came in 2013 and 2014 and this was their sixth trophy in program history. The Wildcats finish the season with a record of 17-2-1.

Freeman sees their reign as champions end with a record of 19-3 and a second-place trophy. It was just the second trophy in program history with most of the team being a part of the other one when they won the title last year. Freeman graduates seven seniors who have been a huge part of the building of a strong program.

Crosspoint Strikes to Win State Title

3rd/4th Place Match

#2 Cle Elum-Roslyn 2, #5 Northwest Christian (Colbert) 0

Both teams would have to flush disappointing losses in less than 24 hours as Cle Elum-Roslyn and Northwest Christian met early on Saturday morning in the 3rd place match.

Cle Elum-Roslyn would make program history regardless of the result as the Warriors would be taking home the first girls soccer trophy in school history.

Northwest Christian would be taking home a trophy for the third consecutive year but would hope for a win to take third which would be the best finish in program history.

Defense stole the show in the first half as both backlines and keepers kept the ball out of the back of the net for a 0-0 score at halftime.

Finally there would be a breakthrough as Berklie Singer got the scoring started in the second half. She wasn’t alone as Nellie Nichols located one of the best shots of the weekend to put the bow on Cle Elum-Roslyn’s 2-0 victory.

Nellie Nichols was named the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match for her fantastic goal in the second half.

Had Northwest Christian earned the win, Rylie Rettedal would have been in the conversation with her offensive output and toughness.

Cle Elum-Roslyn finishes the season with a record of 17-5-1 and the third-place trophy is the first for the Warriors in program history.

Northwest Christian finishes the campaign with a 17-5 record and take home the fourth-place trophy for the third consecutive season.

Semifinals

#3 Freeman 2, #2 Cle Elum-Roslyn 0

Defending champion Freeman Scotties came out a little bit shell shocked early as Cle Elum-Roslyn started fast. However, an own goal would give Freeman a 1-0 in the first half in what would have been a goal for the Scotties anyway as they led at halftime.

Rylee Russell extended that lead for Freeman in the second half on a perfect shot in the 59th minute to make it 2-0. Caroline Smith had multiple saves for the Warriors but the defense of Freeman was too strong as they earned the 2-0 shutout.

Freeman advanced to the state championship match as they looked for a repeat behind Rylee Russell’s great performance as she was the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match.
