SUMNER, WASH

The Sumner Spartans thanks to three touchdowns from Lance McGee, a stout run defense and two second half interceptions book their ticket to the WIAA 4A State Semifinal thanks to a 34-17 win over the Glacier Peak Grizzlies.

Sumner in their state championship defense notches their 7th win in a row. Glacier Peak in their first state appearance in three years sees their season come to an end. The Spartans face Puyallup in the State Semifinal next Saturday at 1pm at Sparks Stadium.

Glacier Peak came into the game fresh off a 38-18 win over fourth seed Chiawana. Tailback Isaiah Owens shined with 170 yards and three touchdowns in the win. While Sumner rolled to a 49-14 win over Richland thanks to four touchdowns from Lance McGee.

The game was touted for the matchup of the ground game for both Glacier Peak and Sumner. It was only fitting the game began with one running back shining from the outset. On the first play from scrimmage, Lance McGee took a Nate Donovan screen pass 57 yards to set the tone for Sumner. McGee capped off the drive with an eight yard touchdown run to put Sumner in front 7-0 not even two minutes into the game. Glacier Peak countered with a long drive of their own. Anchored by a 38 yard third down catch by Matthew Kowalski. Tyler Larsen completed the drive with 31 yard field goal to trim the deficit to 7-3 headed into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw Sumner turn once again to their main standby Lance McGee. His 25 yard touchdown run gave Sumner a 14-3 lead. An advantage they took into halftime. In the battle of the running backs, Sumner’s McGee had 150 yards all purpose while Glacier Peak’s Isaiah Owens was limited to five carries for two net yards.

Glacier Peak received to begin the second half, an opportune chance to chip at the lead.

Instead Sumner’s defense had other ideas. Izear Ferguson intercepted Glacier Peak quarterback Oliver Setterberg to set up Sumner in prime position. On the very next play, Lance McGee raced 29 yards for his third touchdown of the game to extend the lead to 21-3. The defense certainly helped the offense on this day for Sumner, it happened again when Gray Longoria intercepted Setterberg to set up Sumner for another score. A few plays later, Jayden Martemianov corraled a 22 yard touchdown catch to up the Sumner lead to 28-3.

Glacier Peak responded in the fourth quarter with touchdowns from Michael Darling and Isaiah Owens to trim the deficit to 28-17. But Braylon Pope punctuated the Sumner victory with a 25 yard touchdown run on a jet sweep. The Sumner 34-17 win puts them in the State Semifinal for a second consecutive season.

Sumner outgained Glacier Peak 437-210. A huge reason for that was Lance McGee, 239 all purpose yards including three touchdowns. Nate Donavan finished 8/14 for 165 yards on the evening. For Glacier Peak, Oliver Setterberg finished 20/31 for 187 yards with a touchdown pass and two interceptions. Matthew Kowalski finished as Glacier Peak’s leading receiver with eight catches and 89 yards.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Gray Longoria, who led the Sumner defense with his third quarter interception.
