SEATTLE, WASH
The Seattle Torrent welcomed a US women’s hockey record setting crowd of 16,014 into Climate Pledge Arena for the first home game in franchise history. Although the end result was a 3-0 shutout in the hands of the Minnesota Frost, the game was yet another indicator of the strong health of the game of hockey in the Northwest.
The Torrent were coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Vancouver Goldeneyes in both teams’ first games in their respective histories. The Torrent welcomed a Minnesota Frost team coming off winning the PWHL Championship in both years of the league’s existence.
In the first home game in franchise history, Corinne Schroeder started between the pipes for Seattle. Minnesota started Nicole Hensley in net.
The first period saw shots even at eight apiece, but the lone tally came from Minnesota’s Kelly Pannek at 18:08. Minnesota led 1-0 after one period of play.
Period number two saw Minnesota outshoot Seattle 6-4, but Minnesota maintained a 1-0 lead.
Pannek lit the lamp again for Minnesota at 9:48 of the third to give Minnesota insurance. Grace Zumwinkle rammed in a loose rebound in front of Corinne Schroeder’s net at 13:31 to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead.
In the end, Nicole Hensley came away with a 30 save shutout as the Minnesota Frost blanked the Seattle Torrent 3-0. Corinne Schroeder recorded 22 saves in the loss.
Torrent Head Coach Steve O’Rourke said about the loss, “I know the result isn’t what we want, but this is going to be a journey for us to get where we want and get this identity to go. There’s a lot of good parts of this identity.”
The Torrent look for their first win in franchise history on Wednesday against the New York Sirens at 7pm from Climate Pledge Arena.
An attendance of 16,014 attended the game, a United States record for a women’s hockey game. The record crowd is a sign of the growth of the game of hockey to a city once deprived of professional hockey for the longest time.
