SEATTLE, WASH
Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight scored power play goals 22 seconds apart in the dying seconds of regulation to lift the Seattle Torrent to their first win in franchise history over the New York Sirens. Hannah Murphy’s 23 saves proved enough to become the first winning goaltender in the team’s history.
Paetyn Lewis scored the lone goal for New York in the loss.
The Sirens last Saturday defeated the Vancouver Goldeneyes 5-1. The prior night, the Torrent played their first home game in franchise history; losing to the Minnesota Frost 3-0.
Hannah Murphy earned the start for Seattle while New York tabbed Kayle Osborne between the pipes.
The first two periods saw New York control the pace of play. Paetyn Lewis scored 3:15 into the game to set the tone for the Sirens.
New York doubled up Seattle in shots through two periods 20-10.
Matters changed at 16:01 of the third period when New York’s Kristyna Kaltounkova was called for a five minute major and a game misconduct for check from behind.
That set the stage for Seattle’s power play to go to work. Alex Carpenter buried a loose rebound with 1:24 left in the game to give Seattle their first home goal in franchise history. 22 seconds later, Hilary Knight jammed in the game winning goal in a net mouth scramble to give Seattle the late lead and send Climate Pledge Arena into a frenzy.
The Torrent victory brings their record to (1-1-1) on the young season. That win would not be made possible without the goaltending of Hannah Murphy. Murphy said postgame she got “chills” when the fans started chanting her name during the game.
Although it was not easy, the Torrent chalk up their first win for what they hope will be the first of plenty more.
The Sirens this Saturday head north on Interstate 5 to face the Goldeneyes for a second time on Saturday. The Torrent play next on December the 17th at home against the Ottawa Charge.
