Championship Game

Friday, December 5th

(1) Royal Knights 21, (2) Cashmere Bulldogs 20

(Seattle, WA) The Royal Knights have won five straight 1A State Football Championships, and eight of the last nine titles. Coach Allred has over 300 wins in his career, and the Knights are a true football dynasty. Cashmere gave them everything in the regular season, taking Royal to overtime on the road but losing 21-15. The second rematch of the day would prove to be a dandy from a blustery Husky Stadium.

Cashmere got the ball first, but the Royal defense forced a three-and-out. Royal took the ball and moved it down the field. After a defensive pass interference call against Cashmere helped keep the drive alive for the Knights, Royal was able to score. Grant Wardenaar threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Anderson Brown to put the Knights up 7-0 with 2:18 left in the first quarter. Cashmere got the ball back, but another three-and-out was forced by the Royal defense as the Knights would get the ball back. Cashmere’s defense forced Royal to punt to end the first quarter, as Royal led 7-0.

Cashmere’s offense got going as the Bulldogs moved the ball down the field. Rylan Hatmaker threw a pass to the end zone as David Odenrider made the grab with a pair of Knights all over him for a 13-yard touchdown. Cashmere went for two and was stopped inches short of the goal line as Royal led 7-6 with 8:34 left in the second quarter. Royal struck two plays later, as Grant Wardenaar flipped a pass over to Dax Jenks, who scooted 71 yards down the sideline for a touchdown as Royal led 14-6 with 7:43 to go in the first half. Cashmere punted on the ensuing drive, but Joseph Acton intercepted a Royal pass to give the Bulldogs the ball again. Three plays later, Royal picked off Cashmere, as Shea Stevenson got the interception for the Knights. Royal punted it away after a three-and-out and took a timeout to think about what to do on fourth and three. Cashmere took over with two minutes left in the half, and the Bulldogs drove to the Royal 38-yard line, but Fischer Livingston intercepted a pass on second down. Royal kneeled down to run out the clock and take a 14-6 halftime lead into the locker room.

Royal began the second half with the ball, and after a completion to Dax Jenks and a 21-yard run put the Knights at the 29-yard line, Cashmere forced a turnover on downs. The Bulldogs worked their way down the field as Jacoby Tait pinballed off bodies for a two-yard touchdown run. Cashmere went for two to tie the game up, as Ryland Hatmaker handed it off to Tait, who handed it to David Odenrider, who flipped it back to Hatmaker, who barely made it to the goal line for the score to tie it up at 14 apiece with 3:34 left in the third quarter.

Royal quickly worked down the field, and in five plays, they took the lead back. The Knights went back to Dax Jenks, who ran in a 21-yard touchdown to put Royal up 21-14 with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. Cashmere took the ball and got to the Royal five-yard line. The Bulldogs were looking to score, as they threw a screen pass, which was caught, but at the one-yard line, Anderson Brown ripped the ball out of the ball carrier’s hand for a fumble as the Knights took over. Cashmere forced a Royal punt and took over from their eight-yard line, with 4:26 left in regulation.

The Bulldogs faced fourth and one from their own 17-yard line, but Jacoby Tait got just enough for the first down to move the chains. Cashmere’s offense kept things moving as with one minute left, Hatmaker chucked a pass downfield for Logan Spies, who made the grab for a 33-yard gain and set up Cashmere at the 13-yard line. Cashmere picked up a first down at the three-yard line, and with 18 seconds left, Hatmaker called his own number for the second straight play. Hatmaker dashed into the end zone for the short score, and originally, Cashmere sent out the field goal unit to tie the game at 21. The Bulldogs, after the timeout, decided to roll the dice and go for two. Isaac Zavala attempted a pass for Spies but was out of reach, as Royal led 21-20 with 18 seconds left in the game. Cashmere attempted an onside kick, but Royal’s Shea Stevenson recovered it. The Knights kneeled down once, and they were able to celebrate their sixth consecutive state championship.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Royal’s Dax Jenks. Jenks had two touchdowns, one receiving and one on the ground. He had two catches for 101 yards and 12 carries for 143 yards.

This is Royal’s sixth consecutive 1A State Championship, and their ninth in the last 10 years. The Knights’ last loss came when this senior class was just freshmen, losing on September 24, 2022, to Lynden Christian, 21-14.

Semifinals

Saturday, November 29th

(2) Cashmere 41, (3) Mount Baker 14

(Wenatchee, WA) A combination of a strong defense with a ball control and at the same time big play offense from the Cashmere Bulldogs kept the Mount Baker in check and were able to pull away from the Mountaineers in the 2nd half.

Jackson Binger got things started for the Bulldogs picking off a pass and returning it 48 yards for the first score of the game. In the 2nd half QB Rylan Hatmaker heated up throwing for 3 touchdowns with strikes of 42, 36 and 22 yards.

Mount Baker’s Brice Cooper scored both touchdowns with runs of 67 and 80-yards. Mount Baker finishes the year 10-3. This was the 4th appearance in the semifinals for the Mountaineers and first since playing for the Championship in 2022 where they lost to Royal.

Our crew awarded the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP award to Bulldogs QB Rylan Hatmaker. Hatmaker’s leadership and 3 TD passes was the key, Jackson Binger was in the conversation setting the tone defensively with the pick 6.

The win pushes the Cashmere record to 12-1 with their only loss to undefeated Royal 21-15 in double OT back on October 3rd. The Bulldogs will now get their chance to avenge thatb loss next Friday at Husky Stadium for the 1A State Championship. Kick-off between the Bulldogs and Knights is 3pm.

(1) Royal 61, (4) Lynden Christian 35

(Royal City, WA) The Royal Knights are the 5-time defending champions and want to keep that streak alive but to do so had to get by the always tough Lynden Christian Lyncs.

The Lyncs offense did put up 35 points, but their defense could not stop the Knights at all as Royal chalked up 61 points.

The game remained close at halftime with Royal up 34-20 but they stretched it in the 3rd quarter to 48-20 putting the game away. Dax Jenks led the Knight attack with 22 carries and 217 yards plus 3 catches from QB Manny Ravulcaba. That effort earned Jenks our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the Game award.

Lynden Christian finished the year 10-3.

Royal is now 13-o and will face Cashmere who they beat on October 3rd 21-15 in double OT. This sets up a huge showdown next Friday afternoon at Husky Stadium with kickp-off slated for 3pm.
