(Lacey, WA) The Saint Martin’s Saints Women’s Basketball team started GNAC play with a bang, upsetting the #16 team in the country and doubling up Alaska Fairbanks.
#16 Alaska Anchorage vs Saint Martin’s – 12/4
Against #16 Alaska Anchorage, Saint Martin’s took the lead right out of the gate, going up 10-2. The Seawolves came back with a 9-0 run to go up 11-10 after the first quarter. Saint Martin’s stormed back as they went back in front with a 24-20 halftime lead. The Saints had one of their best quarters of the year, scoring 28 points and taking a 20-point lead after three quarters, 52-32. Alaska Anchorage came back in the fourth with scorching offense. The Seawolves made it a four-point deficit, trailing 61-57, but Saint Martin’s hit clutch free throw after clutch free throw to upset Alaska Anchorage 69-60.
This is the second straight regular-season home game where Saint Martin’s has defeated Alaska Anchorage. Kiana Rios led the way with 26 points, 11-12 from the free throw line, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Laikin Hill had 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Avery Oaster nearly had a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Saint Martin’s forced Alaska Anchorage to turn the ball over 24 times, when the Seawolves averaged 11.3 coming into the game, which was fourth best in the NCAA.
Alaska Fairbanks vs Saint Martin’s – 12/6
Saint Martin’s used a combination of excellent free-throw shooting and defense to jump out to a 10-point lead at 18-8 after the first quarter. The Saints knocked down eight free throws in the opening frame. Saint Martin’s forced 19 first-half turnovers while coughing it up just three times, and took a 43-15 lead at halftime. Karyss Lacanlale set a Saint Martin’s single-game record with eight steals, all in the first half. The Saints continued their stout play by routing the Nanooks 74-37 to jump up to a 2-0 start in GNAC play.
Avery Oaster had 21 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and a block. Oaster was 8-11 from the floor and a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. Jaylah Brown had 13 points, while Lacanlale and Laikin Hill each had 11 points. Saint Martin’s recorded 31 points off turnovers, and the bench chipped in with 28 points.
The Saints are on the road for their next two games, going at Chico State and Cal Poly Humboldt in a pair of non-conference action. Saint Martin’s goes back to GNAC play when they travel to Simon Fraser on January 1.
