SEATTLE, WASH

Although the Seattle Kraken stared at the barrel of a seven game losing streak, a late tying goal from Matty Beniers and an overtime winner from Vince Dunn catapulted Seattle to a come from behind 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

All five goals in the game came on special teams. Jared McCann, Beniers, and Dunn all had their goals come on the power play for Seattle. While Los Angeles saw goals from Alex Laferriere shorthanded and Kevin Fiala on the power play.

Seattle sought to end their sixth game losing streak. The Kraken tabbed Joey Daccord in net while the Kings started Anton Forsberg.

Both teams boast game styles that cater towards defense. It came as no surprise when the Kings and Kraken played a scoreless first period. The Kings led in shots 9-6 after the first.

In the second period, Jared McCann opened the scoring with a power play goal at 3:21 from the left slot. Vince Dunn and Chandler Stephenson earned credit for the helpers. Special teams factored into the first goal of the game for the Kraken, the same proved to be true for the Kings. Alex Laferriere scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 8:16 of the second period. The teams finished two periods deadlocked at one goal apiece. Seattle did hold the shot advantage in the middle stanza at 16-6.

Los Angeles with 5:48 left in the game were granted a double minor power play when Ryker Evans caught Corey Perry up high. On the power play, Kevin Fiala streaked in through the Seattle defense and gave Los Angeles the lead with a power play tally at 14:40 to give Los Angeles a 2-1 lead.

In the closing seconds, Los Angeles Kings goaltender Anton Forsberg tripped Jared McCann with 39 seconds left. McCann had to be helped off the ice, no update on his status given postgame. On the ensuing power play, Eeli Tolvanen found a crowding Matty Beniers to tie the game with 26 seconds left.

Overtime was needed to decide it. In bonus hockey, 65 seconds in Adrian Kempe took a penalty for slashing Matty Beniers. And as the theme of the night, Seattle once again went on the man advantage. It took merely 16 seconds before Vince Dunn’s one timer found the back of the net by Forsberg to give the Kraken an incredible 3-2 win.

Joey Daccord made 24 saves in the Kraken win, while Anton Forsberg made 30 saves in the loss.

For Dunn, the game winner capped off a three point night. “he factored in offensively big time…I thought he was really good,” said Kraken Head Coach Lane Lambert.

The lasting story from the game however was the power play, with all three goals coming on the power play. “I thought the power play was outstanding,” said Lambert.

The Kraken travel on the road to face Utah on Friday at 6pm before returning home to face Buffalo on Sunday at 5pm.
