Adna 53, Onalaska 48

(Onalaska, WA) Basketball returned last week but ESN was back in the gyms on Wednesday night with the first girls basketball broadcast of the season. It would be a nonleague game between two Central 2B foes that hoped to get off to strong starts in the 2025-26 season. For the Adna Pirates, they were looking to follow up a historic season that saw them fall in the state championship last March in overtime. Onalaska returned a bulk of last season’s team that fell just one game short of making it to the state tournament. The Loggers have their sights set on finishing the job that they started last year.

Adna lost a bulk of their team that made it to the title game last year but one returner was McKenna Torrey who started the game on fire. A couple of early threes had the Pirates off to a nice start but Onalaska hung around. Renzy Marshall got off to a very strong start as well as Onalaska looked to get more support on the offensive end this season. Adna would dominate the offensive boards with Madison Otten and Rhylee Beebe also knocked down some shots as Adna led 17-7 after a quarter of play.

It felt like the teams were just going to trade shots in the second quarter as Torrey and Beebe continued to lead the way offensively for the Pirates. Madison Otten began to get involved in the scoring column as she used her height and strength to become a dominant paint presence as she steps in for the graduated Bailey Chapman. However, Renzy Marshall would continue her nice start as Kaiyah Sandridge and Emalie Jacoby began to find a couple of open looks as well. Defense was leading the way for the Loggers but they did miss a couple of easy looks that saw them trail at halftime, 29-19.

The offense went quiet for Onalaska in the third quarter of play. Alyssa Carroll added a fourth scorer meanwhile for Adna as they got way too many second chance opportunities on the offensive end. Torrey turned into more of a facilitator in the third as Rhylee Beebe turned defense to offense as Adna built their lead. The Loggers got to the free throw line frequently in the quarter but really struggled from the charity stripe and left a lot of points from the line. Moving to the final quarter, Adna had built a double-digit lead at 41-24.

Onalaska wasn’t going down without a fight. The always electric Emalie Jacoby took the game over in the final eight minutes as the Loggers made their move. Leighton Underhill and Randi Haight hit threes as Adna began to turn the ball over a lot. Jacoby was the catalyst of the comeback however as she poured in 16 points in the second half to lead the Loggers. She had a beautiful step back three that cut the deficit down to just three points at 47-44 late. Onalaska went to the foul game a little early as their defense was dominating with still over a minute left in the game. The move didn’t pay off as McKenna Torrey was lights out at the free throw line as she went 5/6 from the line in the final minute and change. Free throw shooting was the difference as Adna denied the Onalaska comeback with a 53-48 win.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to McKenna Torrey for Adna. She started the game with a couple of big threes to get the Pirates off to a strong start on the offensive side. While she also played lockdown defense all game long, Torrey clutched up down the stretch with five huge free throws late to help Adna fight off the late Logger comeback.

The win sends Adna to 2-1 on the season as this went down as a nonleague game scheduled between the two C2BL foes. The Pirates will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they visit the Tumwater Thunderbirds on Friday at 7pm. Onalaska falls to 1-2 but the Loggers will remain at home on Friday night when they host the Forks Spartans at 7pm.
