Girls Hoops: Adna's big 2nd half pulls away from Enumclaw

(Adna, WA) There was a question of whether or not this game would even be played as the Enumclaw area is dealing with a lot of flooding issues and some uncertainty. First year Head Coach Julie Anderson also had a few players out with illness. But Anderson didn’t want to waste a chance at playing a really good Adna team.

The Hornets are a 3A team from the North Puget Sound League while Adna is a 2B school in the Central 2B. However, the Central 2B is plowing through many larger schools in this pre-season and currently are 17-6 over 1A, 2A and 3A schools.

The two teams were neck a neck through the 1st half with Enumclaw up 16-15 after the 1st quarter then scrambling to get within 1 at the half trailing the Pirates 24-23. Ava Humphrey powered Adna with 3 longballs and 9 points while McKenna Torrey added 5. Adna sank 4 trey’s in the 1st half.

Kaidyn Johnson and Kayla Feddema paced the Hornets with 7 and 6 points. Feddema’s both shots were from deep. Enumclaw kept pace also sinking 4 3-balls.

As the 2nd half began, Adna got off to a fast start with an up tempo pace that was frustrating the Hornets. Alyssa Carroll was doing great work inside and ended the game with 8 points as Adna spread the offense around with 7 players scoring. Rhylee Beebe attacked the rack and scored 8 of her 12 in the 2nd half.

The Pirates defense was applying a ton of pressure and held the Hornet offense to just 6 3rd quarter points and 12 in the 4th while Adna knocked down 30 to win it going away.

Our Thorbeckes MVP was quite the discussion with Alyssa Carroll, Rhylee Beebe, McKenna Torrey all being seriously considered but it was Ava Humphrey who got the nod scoring 12 points, all 3 pointers, her early offense giving the Pirates the halftime lead, smothering defense and several boards and assists.

Adna improves to 4-1 in non-league play and will next travel to Pe Ell on Thursday. Enumclaw drops to 3-3 for the season and hosts Auburn-Mountainview on Thursday.
