Toledo 63, Centralia 28
(Toledo, WA) Another Lewis County battle between a 2A and 2B team took place in Toledo on Tuesday night as the undefeated Centralia Tigers rolled into town to take on the 2-1 Toledo Riverhawks. Toledo entered the matchup coming off their first loss of the season eight days ago after a cancellation last week extended their time off. Centralia would try to turn that loss into a losing streak as the Tigers got their sixth win last Friday against Foss. The Tigers were looking to win a seventh game in a season for the first time since 2021-22.
With only three players on the bench, the Tigers picked up a couple of early fouls that could have turned into a big problem very quickly. Ayana Saucedo would earn the first field goal of the game to give Centralia their first lead early before the Toledo defense began to take over. The Riverhawks have so much height with long wingspans and that created a lot of problems for the Tigers. However, the Toledo offense struggled to get shots to fall early and couldn’t open up too big of a lead in the first quarter. Brooklyn Sprague scored a couple of late buckets towards the end of the quarter but Toledo held a 13-6 lead after one quarter.
Toledo then caught fire offensively and the defense only got stronger and more aggressive. While their defense didn’t allow Centralia to get many shots off, the Riverhawks got the jumpers dropping. Ryah Stanley hit a three and Ellie Fallon followed with one of her own. Sidney Kruger buried her own three while the bench points started adding up for Toledo as well. Centralia didn’t score until late in the 2nd as Ayana Saucedo ended the drought but six threes in the 2nd quarter helped the Riverhawks outscore Centralia 20-5 in the quarter to take a 33-11 lead into halftime.
From that point on, it was all Toledo. The offense didn’t cool down at the break as Ryah Stanley began to flirt with the single game record for three pointers made in Toledo history which was 9 by Beth Layton. Stanley would finish with six but did not play for most of the 4th quarter as Toledo got the running clock and the reserves came in to close it out. Ellie Fallon added a three as did Taysia Miller hit one as well. Centralia did get a nice performance on the offensive glass by Aniela Gunn and Lillian Negron in the final quarter while Lydia Lowe scored five points in the second half. The deficit was too much to overcome however as Toledo handed Centralia their first loss of the season, 63-28.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Ryah Stanley for Toledo. The lone Riverhawk senior sparked the big 2nd quarter for Toledo and Stanley dominated on both ends of the court. She finished with a game-high 22 points including six three pointers.
The win moves Toledo to 3-1 on the season and the Riverhawks will hit the road on Friday for a make-up game when they visit Morton-White Pass at 7pm. Centralia tastes defeat for the first time this season, falling to 6-1 on the year. The Tigers will look to bounce back on Thursday when they visit Hoquiam at 6pm
