(Statesville, NC) Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle was tragically killed in a plane crash in Statesville, North Carolina, this morning. According to reports, a Cessna C550 owned by Biffle crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport. According to officials, the plane crash occurred at approximately 10:15 AM local time.

In a joint statement released by the Biffle, Grossu, Dutton, and Lunders families, they confirm Greg Biffle, Cristina Grossu, Emma, and Ryder passed away in the crash. Also, Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth were the other occupants who died in the crash. In the statement, the families say, “We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones. This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words.”

WSOC-TV is reporting that fog was present at the time of the crash, although it is too early to determine whether it contributed to the incident. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the NTSB and FAA are responding to investigate the cause of the crash.

Biffle was born in Vancouver and raised in Camas. Biffle was part of the 1988 Camas High School graduating class. Biffle was a minority owner of Sunset Speedway in Banks, Oregon, about 25 miles west of Portland. Biffle was named one of NASCAR’s Top 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023. In 2000, Biffle won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and in 2002, he won the NASCAR Busch Series (Now the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series). Biffle was also inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2022. Biffle was a fan favorite, often referred to by his nickname “The Biff”.

Biffle flew countless flights to provide humanitarian aid after Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina. He gained notoriety on social media for his immense generosity and support to those who were stranded and needed lifesaving help.

Biffle was five days away from celebrating his 56th birthday. Biffle married his current wife, Cristina Grossu, in January 2023. The couple had their son, Ryder Jack Biffle, in September 2020. Biffle’s daughter, Emma Elizabeth Biffle, was born during Greg’s first marriage, to Nicole Lunders, in July 2011. Nicole was not involved in the plane crash.
