(Adna, WA) The Adna Holiday Hoops Tournament tipped off on Monday with 5 games. The format is not a true tournament but rather showcase style, simply a chance for these teams to play other teams they normally would likely never play. There were 5 games played on Monday and Tuesday. Below is our coverage of each game with re-caps, scoring totals, our postgame show, video highlights and interviews.
Day 1, Monday, December 29
Game 1 (Girls)
Montesano 51, Franklin Pierce 22
The Bulldogs went on a 17-1 run to open the game and never looked back. Monteesano stretched their lead at the break to 26-3, led by Jillie Dalan’s 11 points. Tea Kioa scored the Cardinals lone bucket late in the 2nd.
Franklin Pierce then got things rolling in the 2nd half scoring 19 with 11 in the 4th quarter. Montesano’s lead was too big though and they cruised to the win. Dalan led Montesano to the win with 20 points. 6 other Bulldogs got in the scorebook.
The Cardinals were close to getting a running clock on them but they refused to give in and came up with their best effort in the 4th quarter. Nevae Taylor led the Cards with 7 points including one from behind the arc.
Montesano improves to 5-4 and will face Pe Ell on Tuesday at 2:30pm, day 2 of the Adna Hoops Holiday Tournament. Franklin Pierce drops to 2-6 and will play Hoquiam on Tuesday in Adna at 1pm.

Montesano’s Jillie Dalan earned the Thorbeckes MVP award with 20 points, 5 rebounds and and 2 blocks.

Game 2 (Boys)
RA Long 78, Montesano 46
RA Long came in undefeated and quickly showed why as they ran the floor with an up and down offense and pressure defense to build a 26-7 lead after 1 quarter and up 45-21 at the break.
Landon Irwin led the Jacks at the half with 15 with 5 others in the scorebook. The Bulldogs did pick it up in the 2nd quarter doubling their output and led by Jayvin Painter off the bench with a pair of treys.
In the 2nd half the Lumberjacks overwhelmed the Bulldogs with a 25-11 run. Irwin would finish with 21, Josh Crane had 18 with Brenner Coates and Cash Coates each with 12. Brenner doing the damage from inside while Cash drained 4 longballs. Brenner also had 5 rebounds.
R A Long remains undefeated at 8-0 and will play the hosts Adna at 7pm on Tuesday. Montesano drops to 7-3 and they will face Tumwater at 4pm on day 2 at Adna.
Caden Grubb led the Bulldogs with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

The Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Landon Irwin with his 19 points, leading all-scorers along with several rebounds, assists and steals to fill out his scorecard.

Game 3 (Girls)
Neah Bay 71, Pe Ell 36
Pe Ell scored first and the Neah Bay Red Devils got off to a bit of a slow start but then got their groove back and pushed their lead to 21-13 after the 1st 8 minutes. The Lady Reds built on that lead in the 2nd roaring out to a 40-18 halftime lead after clamping down on the Trojans alllowing just 5 2nd quarter points.
Neah Bay kept up the pressure and had leads of as many as 38 in the 2nd half. The Lady Reds were led by the 18 of Cerise Moss with 5 long balls. Just behind was Qwaapeys Greene with 15 and 7 rebounds. 1o Lady Reds got in the scorebook.
Pe Ell’s Karli Phelps hit a couple of big 3’s early in the 1st quarter but the Trojans were led by Maisy King and Peyton Zock each with 9 points. Pe Ell drops to 2-5 and will take on Montersano on Tuesday at 2:30pm.
Neah Bay is now 8-1 and will battle the host Adna Pirates at 5:30pm of day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops tournament.

Game 4 (Girls)
Adna 65, Hoquiam 25
The Hoquiam Grizzlies came out swinging early with Aaliyah Kennedy leading the way with 8 1st quarter points all in the first 4:00. The Pirates got their feet under them with Alyssa Carroll getting some inside points with the shooters heating up from behind the arc and Adna pulled ahead 18-12 after 1.
In the 2nd quarter the pressure defense stymied the Grizzlies and the Pirates got hot from the outside sinking 5 3-balls as they extended their lead to 39-14 holding Hoquiam to just 2 points. Carroll had 11 and McKenna Torey joined her in double digits with 10.
In the 2nd half Adna did not take their foot off the gas pedal and rolled out to a 40 point lead with about 2-minutes to go in the 3rd quarter and led 54-20 after 3 quarters. Carroll, Torey and Rhylee Beebe continued their blistering pace as they closed out the Grizzlies 65-25.
Aaliyah Kennedy led the Grizzlies with 12 and 6 rebounds.
Adna improves to 8-1 on the season and will take on Neah Bay at 5:30pm on day 2. Hoquiam is now 4-3 for the season and will play at 1pm on Tuesday against Franklin Pierce.

The Thorbeckes MVP award went to AlyssaCarroll who finished with 15, 5 boards and several assists with some excellent defensive play rounding out her night.

Game 5 (Boys)
Tumwater 62, Adna 61
In the night cap on day 1 our most competitive game of the day had the 2A Tumwater T-Birds take on the hosts, 2B Adna Pirates. The two teams slogged their way through the 1st quarter with Adna holding a point lead, 14-12.
The 2nd quarter saw the Pirates heat up and pull away from Tumwater with a 19-9 2nd quarter run to lead 33-21 at the half. Trevin Salme led the charge with 16 at the break while Grayson Humphrey backed him up with 9. Salme also had 6 rebounds.
The T-Birds had 6 in the scorebook but no one with more than 6 which was Owen Reamer.
The 2nd half the T-Birds applied the defensive pressure and the Pirates got into foul trouble which allowed the T-Birds to cut the lead after 3 to 51-44. Landon Anchors heated up with 13 2nd half points while Luke Overbay finished with the only double-double of the day with 14 rebounds and 12 points.
It came down to the final seconds and Adna’s Trevin Salme who had played the entire 4th quarter with 4 fouls was fouled with 3 seconds to play and trailing by 1. Salme had led all scorers all day long with 30. Salme ended up missing both and the T-Birds pulled off an unbelievable win.
Tumwater is now 4-1 and will take on Montesano on day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops at 4pm. Adna suffered their 1st loss of the year and are 6-1. The Pirates will now face unbeaten RA Long in the tournment finale Tuesday at 7pm.
