SEATTLE, WASH

The Seattle Kraken sought to continue their winning ways after four straight victories. But, Liam Ohgren tallied the winning goal in the shootout in the Vancouver Canucks’ 3-2 win over the Seattle Kraken from Climate Pledge Arena. Linus Karlsson and Elias Petterson scored in regulation for Vancouver, while Kevin Lankinen made 37 saves in the win. Seattle saw Jared McCann and Ryan Winterton score their goals in the first period, while Joey Daccord made 22 saves in the losing effort.

With the game going to a shootout, the Kraken stand two points out of a playoff berth thanks to acquiring points in their last five games.

Seattle came into the night hoping to build momentum from their 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night thanks to Eeli Tolvanen’s pair of goals and Philipp Grubauer’s 32 saves.

Joey Daccord of the Kraken opposed Vancouver goaltender Kevin Lankinen on Monday night.

Jared McCann opened the scoring for Seattle on the power play at 8:50 of the first period on a one time blast on a feed from Vince Dunn in the early seconds of the Kraken man advantage. For McCann his goal comes in his second game back from injury.

Vancouver countered with Linus Karlsson scoring from the low slot off a pass from Liam Ohgren to tie the game at 15:20 of the first period.

Late in the period, Seattle had their response. Ryan Winterton buried a Jacob Melanson pass at 19:40 of the opening period to give Seattle a 2-1. Jacob Melanson with an assist on the goal tallied his first NHL point. Joey Daccord also earned credit for an assist on the goal.

Seattle led in shots on goal 14-12 after an entertaining first period.

Elias Petterson scored 5:23 into the second period to tie the game for Vancouver beating Joey Daccord top shelf from the left slot.The goal was the only scoring of the period. Vancouver outshot Seattle 9-6 in the second period. Seattle would then seize shot volume in the third period.

Period number three saw Seattle with the edge in shots on goal, 16-4 but the game remained scoreless. Overtime was necessary.

The Kraken possessed the puck for the majority of overtime generating three shots on net, including having a few chances on the power play. However, nothing snuck by Lankinen in the overtime period. Seattle outshot Vancouver 3-0 in overtime, but with no scoring through five minutes, a shootout would decide a winner.

After the goaltenders made back to back saves through two rounds of the shootout, Liam Ohgren scored the winning goal in the third round to hand Vancouver a road win.

Vancouver defeated Seattle thanks to 37 saves from goaltender Kevin Lankinen. With the shootout loss, the Kraken add one point in the standings as they hunt for a playoff spot. Seattle sits two points back of San Jose for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Seattle Head Coach Lane Lambert after the game said, “We played a good hockey game. We had our opportunities.” The Kraken outshot the Canucks 19-3 to close out the game’s final 25 minutes.

The Kraken are back in action New Year’s Day against the Nashville Predators before heading on the road the next day to face the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.
