(Adna, WA) This is day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops Tournament and we’ll have game re-caps up as they finish.  Below is our coverage of each game of both days with re-caps, scoring totals, our postgame show, video highlights and interviews.

Day 2, Tuesday, December 30

Game 6 (Girls)
Hoquiam 60,  Franklin Pierce 15

The Hoquiam Grizzlies jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the 1st quarter as Day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops Tournament got underway. Aaliyah Kennedy and Sydney Gordon each had 4 to lead Hoquiam.

Franklin Pierce would get going in the 2nd scoring 8 and trailing 26-8 at the half. Nevae Taylor led the Cards and would finish with 7 for the game.

It was all Grizzlies in the 2nd half with Kennedy leading thre charge with 20 2nd half points finishing with 20 and 9 rebounds just missing a double-double. Lexi Bounty heated up as well with 19 including 4 3-pointers.

The Grizzlies finish 1-1 in the Holiday Hoops Tournament and are now 5-3 on the year. Hoquiam will next play at Shelton this coming Friday.

Franklin Pierce drops to 2-7 and are off until Friday, January 9 when they travel to Eatonville.

Aaliyah Kennedy was named our Thorbeckes MVP of the game with her 28 points and 9 boards.

Game 7 (Girls)
Montesano 45,  Pe Ell 43

Montesano outscored Pe Ell in both opening quarters 12-5 and 14-11 for a 26-16 halftime lead. The Bulldogs Jillie Dalan had just 4 in a well balanced 1st quarter but kicked in 9 to lead all scorers at the half with 13.

Maisy King was the big threat for the Trojans with 7 but also grabbed 6 1st half rebounds. Karli Phelps for Pe Ell and Dalan for Monte each had a 3-pointer.

In the 3rd quarter, Pe Ell came out hot and outscored the Bulldogs 15-9 to cut the lead to 35-31. Karli Phelps hit for 10 as Peyton Zock got into foul trouble. Maisy King stepped up with some big rebounds on her way to 11 in the game with 8 points.

The game came down to the final quarter and twice the Trojans got it down to a 1 score game when Karli Phelps drained a huge 3 to make 42-41 but Dalan answered with a 3 of her own to push the score back to 4, 45-41.

Pe Ell’s Ruby Magruder knocked down a bucket with 9-seconds to play but with only 1 team foul ran out of time before being able to send the Bulldogs to the free throw line for a chance to get the ball back.

Dalan finished with 23 and Jordyn Perry came up with 5 big 4th quarter points to finish with 9. Karli Phelps led the Trojans with 19, King had 8 and 11 rebounds while Peyton Zock scored 4 but also had 10 boards.

Montesano is now 6-4 and will come back to Adna next Monday to play the Pirates. Pe Ell falls to 2-6 and are back in action next Monday at Toledo.

Game 8 (Boys)
Tumwater 60,  Montesano 44

The Montesano Bulldogs scored first to get the game going but Tumwater who took awhile Monday night to find their offense didn’t wait on day 2. With Luke Overbay dominating the paint with 7 1st half rebounds and 7 points it was Ethan Bello who avoided foul trouble in thyis one and got going immediately with 11 1st half points inluding a 3 ball.

The Bulldogs offense was only 2 with Caden Grubb leading all scorers at the break with 15 and Terek Gunter with pair of long balls for all their points. The T-Birds held a 39-21 advantage at the half.

The two teams basically pushed in the 3rd quarter with Bulldogs picking up 1 point on a 10-9 3rd. In the final Montesano needed a hot start but did not get it as the two teams battled back and forth to nearly another stalemate as Montesano outscored the T-Birds 13-12 far short to make up the early deficit.

Montesano was led by the 22 points of Caden Grubb who led all scorers. 7 others got in the scorebook but none with more than 6.

The T-Birds were well balanced with Ethan Bello and Julian Balsley with 14, Overbay finished with 13 and led in rebounding with 8.

Tumwater improves to 5-1 and will host Kelso next Monday. Montesano is now 7-4 and will take on Tenino a week from tonight in Montesano.

Our Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Ethan Bello with his 14 points including a 3, a dunk and several assists with strong defense.

Game 9 (Girls)
Adna 54, Neah Bay 49

This match-up saw two teams who could be playing for a State Championship on the 1st Saturday of March in Spokane but not against each other. Neah Bay is always knocking on the door in the 1B Tourney and Adna is no stranger to playing on Championship Saturday’s in the 2B tournament.

In this early season showdown, the two teams quickness and defense were on display. Both offenses got off to a slow start in the 1st half but the Pirates faired a little better much due to Rhylee Beebe’s 12 points that led all scorers. Allyssa Carroll added 6 but also had a half dozen rebounds.

The high octane Lady Reds offense was not quite firing as well as they’d like in the first half. Wiinuk Martin led Neah Bay with 5 and the Lady Reds trailed the Bucs 25-16 at the break.

Neah Bay regrouped and came running in the 3rd quarter knocking down 20 points while holding the Pirates 12 closing the gap to a 1 point game. Cerise Moss jumped started the offense while playing with 4 fouls scoring 7 of her 13 in the 3rd.

Adna’s Mckenna Torrey had just 4 at the half but she exploded for 20 in the 2nd half with 13 in the 4th quarter. She was 76% of the 4th quarter offense. Allyssa Carroll was big in the key with 11 rebounds.

Qwaapeys Greene led the Lady Reds with 15 while Angel Haltunen and Wiinuk Martin were also big with rebounds, points and defense.

Adna’s Rhylee Beebe finished with 16 and Ava Humphrey added 5 but also grabbed 7 boards.

Game 10 (Boys)
RA Long 57, Adna 43

It was all defense and running up and down the floor in the 1st quarter as both teams tried to settle in but neither would allow it. Just 14 combined points would be scored in the 1st quarter with Adna holding a 9-5 advantage.

The expected high flying offense of the Lumberjacks showed up in the 2nd quarter as they put 23 on the board led by the 10 points of Jeff Rooklidge including a key back-to-back 3 pointer run for the senior guard. Rooklidge was the only one in double figures at the break.

Adna’s Trevin Salme was topping the Pirate scoresheet with 7.

The Jacks continued to extend their lead to a comfortable 46-25 advantage after 3 quarters. Rooklidge’s shooting kept flowing as he added 8 more in the 3rd he was helped by Josh Crane who knocked down 7 in the 3rd.

Adna would not give in though and battled through the end actually outscoring RA Long 18-11 but the Jacks had this one wrapped up with the 14 point win.

Rooklidge led all scorers with 23 and had 5 long balls, Josh Crane added 15 and Anthony Herrera with 10. RA Long is now 9-0 and will next play at Columbia River on Monday.

Adna was led by the 18 points of Grayson Humphrey all scored in the 2nd half. Landen Cline hit for 11. The Pirates are now 7-2 and will host Tenino next Tuesday.

Day 1, Monday, December 29

Game 1 (Girls)
Montesano 51, Franklin Pierce 22

The Bulldogs went on a 17-1 run to open the game and never looked back. Monteesano stretched their lead at the break to 26-3, led by Jillie Dalan’s 11 points. Tea Kioa scored the Cardinals lone bucket late in the 2nd.

Franklin Pierce then got things rolling in the 2nd half scoring 19 with 11 in the 4th quarter. Montesano’s lead was too big though and they cruised to the win. Dalan led Montesano to the win with 20 points. 6 other Bulldogs got in the scorebook.

The Cardinals were close to getting a running clock on them but they refused to give in and came up with their best effort in the 4th quarter. Nevae Taylor led the Cards with 7 points including one from behind the arc.

Montesano improves to 5-4 and will face Pe Ell on Tuesday at 2:30pm, day 2 of the Adna Hoops Holiday Tournament. Franklin Pierce drops to 2-6 and will play Hoquiam on Tuesday in Adna at 1pm.

Game 2 (Boys)
RA Long 78, Montesano 46

RA Long came in undefeated and quickly showed why as they ran the floor with an up and down offense and pressure defense to build a 26-7 lead after 1 quarter and up 45-21 at the break.

Landon Irwin led the Jacks at the half with 15 with 5 others in the scorebook. The Bulldogs did pick it up in the 2nd quarter doubling their output and led by Jayvin Painter off the bench with a pair of treys.

In the 2nd half the Lumberjacks overwhelmed the Bulldogs with a 25-11 run. Irwin would finish with 21, Josh Crane had 18 with Brenner Coates and Cash Coates each with 12. Brenner doing the damage from inside while Cash drained 4 longballs. Brenner also had 5 rebounds.

R A Long remains undefeated at 8-0 and will play the hosts Adna at 7pm on Tuesday. Montesano drops to 7-3 and they will face Tumwater at 4pm on day 2 at Adna.

Caden Grubb led the Bulldogs with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Neah Bay 71, Pe Ell 36

Pe Ell scored first and the Neah Bay Red Devils got off to a bit of a slow start but then got their groove back and pushed their lead to 21-13 after the 1st 8 minutes. The Lady Reds built on that lead in the 2nd roaring out to a 40-18 halftime lead after clamping down on the Trojans alllowing just 5 2nd quarter points.

Neah Bay kept up the pressure and had leads of as many as 38 in the 2nd half. The Lady Reds were led by the 18 of Cerise Moss with 5 long balls. Just behind was Qwaapeys Greene with 15 and 7 rebounds. 1o Lady Reds got in the scorebook.

Pe Ell’s Karli Phelps hit a couple of big 3’s early in the 1st quarter but the Trojans were led by Maisy King and Peyton Zock each with 9 points. Pe Ell drops to 2-5 and will take on Montersano on Tuesday at 2:30pm.

Neah Bay is now 8-1 and will battle the host Adna Pirates at 5:30pm of day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops tournament.

Game 4 (Girls)
Adna 65, Hoquiam 25

The Hoquiam Grizzlies came out swinging early with Aaliyah Kennedy leading the way with 8 1st quarter points all in the first 4:00. The Pirates got their feet under them with Alyssa Carroll getting some inside points with the shooters heating up from behind the arc and Adna pulled ahead 18-12 after 1.

In the 2nd quarter the pressure defense stymied the Grizzlies and the Pirates got hot from the outside sinking 5 3-balls as they extended their lead to 39-14 holding Hoquiam to just 2 points. Carroll had 11 and McKenna Torey joined her in double digits with 10.

In the 2nd half Adna did not take their foot off the gas pedal and rolled out to a 40 point lead with about 2-minutes to go in the 3rd quarter and led 54-20 after 3 quarters. Carroll, Torey and Rhylee Beebe continued their blistering pace as they closed out the Grizzlies 65-25.

Aaliyah Kennedy led the Grizzlies with 12 and 6 rebounds.

Adna improves to 8-1 on the season and will take on Neah Bay at 5:30pm on day 2. Hoquiam is now 4-3 for the season and will play at 1pm on Tuesday against Franklin Pierce.

Game 5 (Boys)
Tumwater 62, Adna 61

In the night cap on day 1 our most competitive game of the day had the 2A Tumwater T-Birds take on the hosts, 2B Adna Pirates. The two teams slogged their way through the 1st quarter with Adna holding a point lead, 14-12.

The 2nd quarter saw the Pirates heat up and pull away from Tumwater with a 19-9 2nd quarter run to lead 33-21 at the half. Trevin Salme led the charge with 16 at the break while Grayson Humphrey backed him up with 9. Salme also had 6 rebounds.

The T-Birds had 6 in the scorebook but no one with more than 6 which was Owen Reamer.

The 2nd half the T-Birds applied the defensive pressure and the Pirates got into foul trouble which allowed the T-Birds to cut the lead after 3 to 51-44. Landon Anchors heated up with 13 2nd half points while Luke Overbay finished with the only double-double of the day with 14 rebounds and 12 points.

It came down to the final seconds and Adna’s Trevin Salme who had played the entire 4th quarter with 4 fouls was fouled with 3 seconds to play and trailing by 1. Salme had led all scorers all day long with 30. Salme ended up missing both and the T-Birds pulled off an unbelievable win.

Tumwater is now 4-1 and will take on Montesano on day 2 of the Adna Holiday Hoops at 4pm. Adna suffered their 1st loss of the year and are 6-1. The Pirates will now face unbeaten RA Long in the tournment finale Tuesday at 7pm.
