Only two playoff spots remain open in the NFL after week 17 and now just two spots remain in Professor DW’s Playoff Tournament as an upset capped off the penultimate week of the season. With three games on Thursday, two more on Saturday, and the usual slate of Sunday and Monday, it was an up and down week for football fans with some field goal filled games and some that featured very few. That would be fitting as we had to go to the tiebreaker once again in Professor DW’s Football Pick ’em Challenge.
A stunning upset on Monday night football saw the Atlanta Falcons blow a big league before winning with a field goal in the final minutes to stun the Los Angeles Rams and eliminate LA from the race for the #1 seed. The upset also sent us to a three-way tie as Matt Evans, Jared Kickner, and Wes Swick found themselves in a tie atop the leaderboard.
Again, it was an up and down week in terms of field goals and Jared and Wes both tried to hit the total right on while Matt played it safe with a low guess. Matt’s guess of 500 was well under but both Jared and Wes also went under which eliminated Matt this week. Jared went just a bit higher than Wes with a guess of 1,927 while Wes guessed 1,882. With a total of 2,056, Jared pulled out the victory while Wes had to settle for second place.
Jared won back in week 2 while Wes got a win in week 5 while finishing second in week 13 which means Wes has taken up three spots in the Postseason Tournament. Jared also blocks out another spot which means we remain at 24 total entrants and next week is the final chance to qualify for the Postseason Tournament. The winner of that tournament will win the Ticket Bonanza this year! That includes two tickets to the Mariners, Seahawks, Kraken, Sounders, Storm, Tacoma Rainiers, and Emerald Downs. Jared and Wes can continue to enter to try to up their chances of winning the grand prize, but every qualified entrant only gets ONE entry in the Postseason Tournament.
DW was bad once again this week with a disaster of a performance. After coming so close to a win last week, DW managed just 8 correct picks this week which send him back into his status as a big loser.
The upset of the week this week was not the Monday night stunner, but rather a Christmas miracle. Minnesota eliminated Detroit from playoff contention behind Max Brosmer and a tremendous performance by the Vikings defense. Only three entrants predicted that upset as the Grinch in Detroit is a purple and not green this year.
Week 18’s contest is up. It is the final week of the season with games only on Saturday and Sunday so the deadline is at noon on Saturday. Congratulations Jared and Wes and best of luck to everyone during this final week.
