(Bellingham, WA) The Saint Martin’s Saints Women’s Basketball team faced Western Washington in a battle of 3-0 GNAC schools. Both offenses started out on fire as Saint Martin’s led 22-21, with the help of 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc. The Saints’ momentum was halted in the second quarter, as they were limited to six points and trailed 38-28 at the half. Saint Martin’s had a 20-point third quarter, but were outscored by a point as the double-digit deficit remained after three quarters. Western Washington pulled away at the end for a 77-60 victory.
Saint Martin’s was led by Kiana Rios, who had 17 points and didn’t miss a free throw, going 9-9. Laiken Hill was in double-figures again with 11 points and three triples. Jada Travis had 10 points and seven rebounds, while Avery Oaster also had 10 points. Saint Martin’s didn’t miss a free throw after the first quarter, going 22-25 in the game, but shot 16-54 from the floor and 6-23 from three-point range. The Saints took care of the ball well, turning it over only nine times while forcing 15 turnovers for Western Washington. The Vikings outscored Saint Martin’s 40-14 in the paint while shooting 61% from the floor.
Saint Martin’s drops to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC. The Saints are still in a good spot, currently second behind Western Washington and Central Washington, who are both undefeated. Saint Martin’s hosts Seattle Pacific on Thursday for their first home game in over a month.
