The LPGA and TMRW Sports, a company founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have announced that a new women’s golf league is coming. WTGL will be a new team golf league “featuring the world’s best women golfers,” according to a press release from TMRW Sports.
TMRW Sports launched TGL, an indoor screen golf league featuring PGA Tour players, last year, and TGL is now in its second season. The release didn’t specify whether WTGL will be broadcast on ESPN, as TGL has been. TMRW Sports is “preparing for a launch in winter this year,” and will be played in the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the same spot where TGL is.
TGL has been an interesting twist on golf. With it being a screen golf league, this year, the league is starting to release the governor on hole design, while teams are starting to get smarter on usage of the hammer, the shot clock, timeouts, and overall strategy. Should WTGL be on ESPN, this would be an excellent opportunity for the LPGA to put their stars on a platform they seldom get to be on. This would also open the door for a TGL/WTGL crossover, with the men and women competing against each other.
TGL’s second match of the year takes place tonight, with The Bay Golf Club, consisting of 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry, two-time Ryder Cup winner Ludvig Aberg, and 2023 U.S. Open Champion Wyndham Clark, going up against Atlanta Drive GC, who won last year’s inaugural SoFi Cup. Atlanta Drive will be playing 2014 FedEx Cup Champion, Billy Horschel, two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Chris Gotterup, and three-time Ryder Cup player, Patrick Cantlay.
