CALGARY, ALBERTA
Jacob Melanson scored his first goal in the National Hockey League while Philipp Grubauer made 41 saves in a 5-1 victory for the Seattle Kraken over the Calgary Flames on the road. With the win, Seattle moves into the third seed in the Pacific division, one point back of first place.
Shane Wright, Vince Dunn, Frederick Gaudreadu, and Matty Beniers also scored for Seattle. Adam Klapka scored the opening goal for Calgary while goaltender Dustin Wolf made 23 saves in the loss.
Seattle had won six of the last seven games coming into the evening. Their last regulation loss came against the Flames back on December 18th by a 4-2 score.
Calgary opened the scoring when Adam Klapka swatted the aftermath of a Ryan Lomberg shot to hand the Flames a 1-0 lead 6:33 into the game, a lead Calgary took into the first intermission.
Seattle’s seven game point streak has highlighted the growth of the fourth line. A line that includes Jacob Melanson. It was only a matter of time before he was rewarded. Ryan Winterton set up Melanson at the doorstep of the net for his first goal in the National Hockey League. “That’s something you dream of as a kid…getting that first goal is unreal,” Melanson said in the aftermath of the goal. Melanson’s goal even the game at 2:17 of the second period.
With the game in the balance in the third period, Seattle turned it up a notch. Shane Wright crashed the net at 1:57 of the period to end an eight game goalless drought and give the Kraken a 2-1 lead.
Vince Dunn followed up by scoring an insurance goal from the left slot at 5:12.
Calgary pulled the goaltender late in the period when Frederick Gaudreau scored into an empty net at 17:25. Matty Beniers scored 14 seconds later to further cement a Seattle win.
Philipp Grubauer’s 41 saves highlights his fourth win in a row. Head Coach Lane Lambert said about Grubauer, “I think he’s reading the game really well he’s doing a leadership thing with his play, that speaks volumes.”
When asked about what the difference is in his play compared to last year Grubauer said, “my mustache”.
Seattle hosts the Boston Bruins Tuesday night. Stay tuned for continued updates on the Seattle Kraken.
