Silas Rams 69, Lincoln (Tacoma) Abes 68
(Tacoma, WA) Last year, Silas and Lincoln played twice, and Lincoln won both games by a combined three points. When the two teams squared off at Silas, it took overtime to settle a winner, and it came down to the final seconds. With the crosstown rivals squaring off, the tension was high, the stands were packed, and the game was just as good, if not better than last year.
In the first quarter, Lincoln scored the first four points before Silas went on a 14-0 run. Trey Collier, who played for Lincoln last year but transferred to Silas this year, led the Rams with seven first-quarter points, including draining a triple. Cannon Howard and Malachi Doss each hit threes to jump out to a 17-10 lead after the first. The second quarter was full of offense, as Lincoln had 19 points, but Silas had a whopping 25-point quarter. Doss hit a pair of threes for the Rams, and MakHai Pleasant-Tolliver had a pair of baskets to chip in. Silas had seven different players score in the quarter as they shared the basketball beautifully. Lincoln’s Davion Shareef-Dulaney was the star of the period. The sophomore had 10 points in the quarter, featuring a triple. Silas took a 42-29 lead going into the halftime break.
Lincoln erupted in the third quarter, scoring 27 points in the quarter, the most by either side in the game. O’Shea Lamar couldn’t be stopped, as he connected on four threes in the quarter and had 16 points. Justus Holt had seven points for the Abes in the quarter to help out as well. Lincoln held Silas to just eight points in the third as Lincoln flipped the game on its head to take a 56-50 lead going into the fourth.
Lincoln continued to ride their momentum as Davion Shareef-Dulaney pulled off a self alley-oop to put the Abes up 60-52. Silas wasn’t phased, as Cannon Howard knocked down a deep two, Trey Collier canned a three, MakHai Pleasant-Tolliver had an acrobatic putback and a breakaway layup as the Rams had a 9-0 run to retake the lead at 61-60. After Kasey Williams made a short shot and O’Shea Lamar drilled two free throws, the Abes led 64-61. Malachi Doss hit a close shot for Silas to put them within one point. Shareef-Dulaney and Lamar each had layups to put them up 68-63 with one minute left. Pleasant-Tolliver got a three-point play as he put Silas down two at 68-66 with 52 seconds left. Lincoln missed a pair of free throws, but Silas couldn’t take advantage, as on the drive, Collier found a slippery spot and fell down for a travel. Lincoln misfired on two more free throws, and Pleasant-Tolliver drove to the basket and was fouled. He split the free throws to make it a 68-67 game with Lincoln still on top. Silas fouled again, but Lincoln couldn’t convert from the free-throw line as they only led by one. Silas called a timeout with 6.9 seconds left in regulation. Lincoln fouled on the inbounds because the Abes only committed three fouls. With 5.5 seconds left, Silas inbounded for Pleasant-Tolliver, and he was fouled just inside the three-point line with 1.0 seconds left. He stepped up to the free-throw line and drained the first to tie the game before Lincoln called a timeout. After the timeout, Pleasant-Tolliver drilled the second free throw to give Silas a 69-68 lead. Lincoln called a timeout and attempted a half-court heave that missed, and this year it was Silas with a one-point victory at 69-68.
Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Silas senior, MakHai Pleasant-Tolliver, who hit the game-winning free throws, was 7-8 from the line in the game, and led the Rams with 19 points, 10 in the fourth quarter. In last year’s game, he had 17 points, and this year, those extra two points proved to be the difference.
Silas was also led by Trey Collier, who would get 15 points against his former team. Malachi Doss was again terrific on the glass, coming off the bench with 12 points. Cannon Howard had 11 points, Myree Woods finished with six points, AJ Smith had four points, and Jaxen Loften had two points.
Lincoln’s O’Shea Lamar and Davion Shareef-Dulaney were awesome for the Abes. Shareef-Dulaney had 24 points and one of the highlights of the year with the self alley-oop. Lamar had 23 points, including 16 in the third quarter. Justus Holt had 13 points, Kasey Williams had five points, and Jalan Lillie had three points.
Silas improves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the PSL. The Rams hold the fourth spot in the PSL-Narrows, which is important as the top four teams in each PSL division make the PSL Tournament. Silas hosts Bellarmine Prep on Thursday, a game that will be streamed on ESN as part of a boys and girls basketball doubleheader.
Lincoln drops to 5-2 on the season and in league play. The Abes remain in second place in the PSL-Narrows. Lincoln will face Central Kitsap on the road on Thursday.
The next meeting between these two teams is on Monday, February 2, when Lincoln hosts Silas at 7:30 PM. Including this game, four of the last five meetings between the two teams have been won by two points or less.
