(Kent, WA) The annual King Showcase of High School Basketball once again was held at the ShoWare Center in Kent. 7 games tipped off at 10am. There were 3 girls games and 4 boys. Our coverage of all 7 games is below with game re-caps, links to our postgame shows, video highlights and replays of the games on the NFHS Network. The game coverage is in the order the games were played.

Game 1

(Girls) Union 76, Bellarmine Prep 43

The Union Titans came in as the the #1 RPI team in the 4A girls and played like it. Led by Brooklyn Haywood, the Titans led 24-13 over the 3A Bellarmine Prep Lions and pushed it to a 42-24 lead at the break.Haywood had already knocked down 27 points with 5 3-balls.

The Lions are tied with Gig Harbor atop the Puget Sound League Narrows division and #16 in the 3A RPI. But the Lions were no match for the high flying Titans who added to their lead going up 58-36 after 3. Union finished off the game on an 18-7 run in the 4th for the final score.

For Bellarmine, Melina Petramalo led with 14 points and a pair of 3’s while Ayla Flynn finished with 12 and 8 rebounds and Brooklynn Murray also hit twin figures with 11.

Haywood finished with 42 points including 8 3-balls and 6-7 from the line. She added 6 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals. Aleya Smith hot for 15 with a 3 ball and MyMy Larry had 14 points. Union had 12 steals in the game led by Kadee Spike’s 5 and outrebounded the Lions 29-28.

Union improved to 14-2 on the season and will return to conference play on Wednesday at Camas.

Bellarmine Prep is now 10-4 and travels to North Thurston Tuesday night and then will host Central Kitsap on Thursday in PSL play.

Sumner Holiday Inn MVP

This was pretty easy with Brooklyn Haywood scoring 42 and filling out a solid stat line was our MVP. MyMy Larry and Aleya Smith both were in the discussion but Haywood was the clear choice.

Game 2

(Boys) Auburn-Mountainview 57, King’s 36

The Auburn Mountainview Lions and King’s Knights began in a 16-16 tie after the 1st quarter and the two teams tied 7-7 in the low scoring 3rd quarter. It was the 2nd and 4th that were problematic for the Kinights The Lions pulled away for a 31-21 lead at the half with a 15-6 run. In the 4th, it was a 19-7 streak that put the game away.

The A-M defense was the difference with 18 steals to Kings’ 10 and 3-1 in blocked shots. The Lions held the Knights to single digits in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters while adding to their lead.

The Lions had 3 players in double figures and they did the majority of that scoring in the even quarters and were led by Kolven Posey with 22. Posey was also a bother on defense with 5 of the 18 team steals. Cody Bennion hit for 15 and Markell Lowery had 10. Lowery and Dale Jones led A-M in rebounds with 6 each. The LOions hit 8 of 22 3-balls shooting 36% and 23 for 49 for the game at 47%.

King’s had just one in double figures and that was Carter Koing with 10 while Dozie Asinobi just missed with 9. Owen Linblad hauled in a game high 9 rebounds.

King’s drops to 10-5 on the season and are next at home on Saturday in a non-league game hosting Toppenish.

Auburn Mountainview improves to 11-4 and returns to 3A NPSL action Tuesday night at Todd Beamer, Thursday they host Enumclaw and at K-M on Saturday.

Sumner Holiday Inn MVP

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Kolven Posey who led all scorers with 22 points, had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. Codyu Bennion and Markell Lowery were in consideration as well.

Game 3

(Girls) Tualatin (Ore) 55, North Thurston 15

The Tualatin Timberwolves traveled to the ShoWare center to face the North Thurston Rams and the nationally ranked #20 team showed why they have caught the attention of the national pollsters.

The Timberwolves rolled out to a 26-3 lead after 1 quarter and pushed it to 46-5 at the half. This triggered the running clock for the entire 2nd half. North Thurston actually outscored Tualatin in the 2nd half 10-9 but that against many of the T-Wolves reserves.

Kendall Dawkins led the Timberwolves with 15 and 6 rebounds, Love Lei Best scored 12 and Ries Miadich also hit double figures with 11.

The Timberwolves are now 12-1 on the season and will take on Lake Oswego Tuesday night.

North Thurston came in with an 11-2 overall mark but were overwhelmed by the T-Wolves and dropped to 11-3. The Rams Shayla Cordis led and the scoring with 12 with Jae Jae Cherry hitting a 3 for the rest of the points. North Thurston will look to forget this game as quickly as possible when they host Bellarmine Prep on Tuesday.

The ESN crew had 3 to choose from to name our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP. Kendall Dawkins, Ries Miadich were in the running but they decided to go with Love Lei Best who finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.

Game 4

(Boys) Tualatin (Ore) 58, Edmonds-Woodway 46

The Tualatin Timberwolves led pretty much from start to finish but could not put the Warriors away until late in the 4th quarter. Tualatin led 14-10 after 1 quarter and 31-24 at the half.

Damain Olvera and Jemai Lake were rolling early for the Timberwolves but Edmonds-Woodway hung in there with early scoring from William Alseth with 6 of his points in the 1st quarter.

Both teams struggled in the 3rd with E-W outscoring Tualatin 9-8. In the 4th quarter, the Warriors got within 1 but the T-wolves found their groove. Lake scored all 8 points in the 3rd for Tualatin and the first 3 in the 4th.

Pat Vialva Jr then got into the act with a strong 4th quarter to close out the game and secure the win and ended up with 17 points..

The Warrior’s Grant Williams had a cold 1st half but then warmed up to finish strong and led E-W with 14 points. DJ Karl hit late as well finishing with 11.

Tualatin is now 11-5 on the season and is back in action Tuesday night at Lake Oswego.

Edmonds-Woodway drops to 14-2 and heads back to WESCO league play Wednesday when they host Archbishop Murphy.

Sumner Holiday Inn MVP

The ESN crew selected Jemai Lake earned the Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP award. Lake filled out his stat line with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocked shots and a steal.

Game 5

(Girls) Issaquah 66, White River 51

The Issaquah Eagles got off to slow start while the Hornets of White River were dropping buckets left and right. White River poured in 22 points in the opening 8 minutes and held a 22-15 lead. In the 2nd quarter the Eagles maintained and hit for 17 while the Hornets began to cool off but still led 36-32 at the break.

Issaquah was ready to go and found the their balance in the 3rd exploding for 24 points while White River continued to struggle offensively and were outscored 24-10 in the 3rd for a 56-46 lead heading into the 4th.

The Hornets freefall of abouot halving their offense from the previous quarter continued as they could only manage 5 points. While Issaquah also dropped off in the final the 10 points was more than enough to ice the win.

Clara Gibbons led the Eagles with 19 while Rhenna Hung added 13 and 6 rebounds. Issaquah improves to 8-7 with win and travels to Skyline Tuesday night.

White River was led by the 21 of Maggee Schmitz, The Hornets are now 10-4 on the season and travels to Rainier on Wednesday for a non-conference game.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Clara Gibbons from Issaquah for her 19 points. She added 5 boards, 2 assists, a blocked shot and a steal to earn the honor.

Game 6

(Boys) Mount Si 60, Puyallup 50

This was a great match-up of 2 top 20 RPI teams in a very interesting 4A classification this season. The Mount Si Wildcats and Puyallup Vikings could not separate in the 1st half as they went to the break tied at 26.

Puyallup had trouble getting the ball to drop through the net and had several rim-outs and roll-off the rim shots and simply didn’t fall for them when they needed it.

The game was fast moving up and down and physical. In the end Mlount Si gained that 3rd quarter advantage and held off Puyallup from taking a big run in the 2nd half.

Leading the Wildcats was Brady Hennig who led all scorers with 21 while Marcus Heide hit for 16 and Taylor Standfield just missed double figs with 9.

The Vikings got 18 from Will Nasinec and 5 rebound. Bennett Hedman hit for a dozen.

Mount Si is now 10-1 on the year and returns to conference play Tuesday night when they host Bellevue and will travel to Renton on Friday.

Puyallup falls to 11-5 for the season and they get back to SPSL play on Wednesday at South Kitsap then travels to Sumner on Friday.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Brady Hennig who filled out the stat sheet with the 21 points along with 6 rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Game 7

(Boys) Lake Washington 62, Kentwood 35

The Kentwood Conquerors came out with a solid start battling the Kangaroos of Lake Washington. The Conks took a 12-6 lead after the 1st quarter and were playing tough defense and getting enough out of the offense. 

In the 2nd quarter, L-W found their rhythm offensively and exploded for 19 while the Kangs defense stepped up and Kentwood went cold with just 4 2nd quarter points. 

Lake Washington built on that lead out of the halftime break with another 19 and would go on to outscore the Conks 56-23 over the last 3 quarters. L-W dominated the boards nearly doubling the Conks 40-22 and came up with 6 blocked shots. Their shooting percent went from 40% in the 1st half to 57% in the 2nd and ended at 50% for the game. L-W went 8/21 from the 3-point line for a 38% conversion rate.

Kentwood never shot above 30% and finished at 29% for the game. The Conks struggle from deep as well going 4 of 18 for 22% behind the arc.

Lake Washington spread the offense around with 4 in double figures and a 5th scorer with 9. Mateo Cummings led the Kangs with 15 and had 4 blocked shots and 4 steals. Jayden Hunt scored 12 and grabbed 10 rebounds and had the only double-double of the whole day. Omer Ziklik and Matthew Adeeb had 12 and 10 respectively with Hunter Phipps just missing with 9.

Brandon Tagle led Kentwood with 12 points along with 4 steals while Caleb Ross hit for 10 and led the Conks with 5 rebounds.

Lake Washington improves to 14-1 and will next play Tuesday night when they host Renton and then travel to Redmond on Friday.

Kentwood is now 8-7 and is home against Auburn riverside Tuesday night and then travels to Stadium on Friday.

Sumner Holiday Inn MVP

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was a tough decision with 4 in double figures and Jayden Hunt with the only double-double of the day but the crew felt leading game scorer Mateo Cummings was the one to the MVP. Cummings had a great game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, 4 blocked shots and 4 steals.
