Lincoln (Tacoma) Abes 68, Gig Harbor Tides 66 (OT)

(Tacoma, WA) With only a few weeks left of regular-season hoops, time is winding down on teams making a charge to win their division or league. Lincoln and Gig Harbor are feeling that pressure, with the Abes sitting in second place in the PSL-Narrows and the Tides right behind them in third. Lincoln came into the game at 9-2 in league play while Gig Harbor was 8-3. Bellarmine Prep sits atop the division at 11-0, and with each side having only four games left after the game, time isn’t on their side to try to jump up to the top spot in the division. Both teams are in great positions to secure their spots in the district tournament, and a win would all but guarantee it. Lincoln won the first matchup in Gig Harbor last month, and the two teams collided with second place in the division up for grabs.

In the first quarter, points were hard to come by. The defenses forced very few scoring opportunities as Gig Harbor led 7-6 after the first eight minutes. The Jack Brown show began in the second quarter, as Brown hit three three-pointers, including a four-point play for Gig Harbor. Brown had 13 points by himself in the second, and almost outscored Lincoln in the quarter. Gig Harbor had a 19-point second quarter, their largest in a quarter in the game, while Lincoln had 14 points and had six different Abes score. The Tides led 26-20 at the halftime break. The third quarter was fairly even, with Lincoln barely outscoring Gig Harbor 19-17. Lincoln’s Davion Shareef-Dulaney, O’Shea Lamar, and Justus Holt combined for 17 of the 19 points the Abes put up in the quarter. Gig Harbor’s Michael Masini, Jack Brown, and Max Schwab carried the load offensively for the Tides, as they led 43-39 heading into the fourth.

Lincoln and Gig Harbor would trade baskets and make free throws, with the Tides doing just enough to hang on to their lead. Lincoln tied the game up at 47 apiece with a Davion Shareef-Dulaney triple, which was the first tie since things were knotted up at two in the first quarter. The fouls started racking up on both sides, and free throws played a crucial role in the fourth. The two teams traded the lead numerous times in the fourth, and with 30 seconds left in the fourth, the game was tied at 56 before Shareef-Dulaney drained a three-pointer and was fouled. He converted the free throw to put the Abes up by four, but Gig Harbor’s Michael Masini split the two free throws he earned after getting fouled. With the Tides down three, they fouled, and Lincoln couldn’t put away the game from the free-throw line. Gig Harbor rebounded the second missed free throw, and Masini delivered a perfect pass to Brown, who rekindled his hot hand from the second quarter to bury his fifth three of the night with 10 seconds left to tie the game. Lincoln tried a three at the buzzer but it didn’t go and the game went to overtime, tied at 60.

In the extra quarter, Masini put Gig Harbor up 62-60 by hitting more free throws. Lincoln responded with Shareef-Dulaney knocking down a floater to tie it at 62. Shareef-Dulaney forced a steal and got out ahead of the defense to throw down a dunk as Lincoln led 64-62 halfway through overtime. Later on, Lincoln’s Noah Dennis drained one of two free throws to put the Abes up 65-62 with a minute and a half left in overtime. Shareef-Dulaney added a free throw to make it 66-62 before Masini muscled in a tough shot over an Abe defender to make it 66-64 with under a minute left. With 20 seconds left, Lincoln tried a three-pointer and missed. Gig Harbor rebounded it, but the Tides couldn’t get the ball into the front court in ten seconds and turned it over with 10 seconds remaining. O’Shea Lamar drilled two free throws with eight seconds left to put Lincoln up 68-64. Gig Harbor’s Michael Masini raced down the floor to dunk it in, but with only three seconds left, Lincoln let the time run out to come away with a 68-66 victory.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Lincoln’s Davion Shareef-Dulaney. Shareef-Dulaney dazzled again in the fourth quarter and overtime, taking the game over and helping Lincoln secure the victory. He led all scorers with 32 points, knocked down six three-pointers, and, in a game where four players fouled out, was remarkably only called for one foul despite playing the entire game.

Lincoln’s O’Shea Lamar added 12 points, Justus Holt fouled out with 11 points, Noah Dennis had seven points, Uriah Wilson had three points, Sione Kaho had two points, and Kasey Williams had one point for the Abes.

Gig Harbor’s Michael Masini and Jack Brown both had 27 points to lead the Tides. Max Schwab had six points, Ty Buchanan had four points, and William Cody had two points.

Lincoln improves to 10-2 on the season and in league play and will face Bellarmine Prep on the road next Wednesday. Gig Harbor drops to 11-6 on the season and 8-4 in the league and will host Silas on Wednesday.
