Adna 61, Napavine 56

(Adna, WA) The top of the Central B boys basketball league remains tight as they enter the final quarter of the season with the Adna Pirates leading the way into their showdown with rival Napavine Wednesday night.

The game was also highlighted as both rival communities came together in a “purple out’ to support Colfax boys basketball head coach Reece Jenkin. Jenkin a friend of Adna coach Luke Salme recently disclosed he is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Salme told the Chronicle he wanted to do something to support his friend and both communities took over. For all the details on this and the Chronicle’s full coverage of this game written by Dylan Reubenking click this link.

By the time the game got to midway through the 4th quarter it appeared the Pirates would pull away for an easy win leading by 15. But the Tigers weren’t going to let that happen and made a late charge. Our re-cap, postgame show and video highlights all below.

Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start other than Adna’s Trevin Salme who scored 18 of his 25 points in the 1st half. The Pirates led by 6 after the 1st quarter 14-8. As time was ticking down in the half Salme launched a long 3 that was off the mark but Kaden Richardson got the loose ball and laid it in just as time expired to give the Pirates a 32-20 lead.

As the 2nd half began, Adna continued to extend their lead with contributions from Landen Cline and Grayson Humphrey from the perimeter and the inside play of James Greenwood and Jackson Knittle. By the end of the 3rd quarter t he Adna lead was up to 50-37.

As the 4th quarter began the Pirates pushed their lead to 15, 57-42 with just 4:30 left to play in the game. This is when the tied changed.

Napavine refused to allow the Pirates to runaway with the game and stayed just within reach. The Tigers Tyce Vigre had kept the Tigers hopes alive and finished with 18 points. But Napavine’s offense was well spread out with Cal Bullock and Layton Griffith each in double figures with 11. Griffith came up big late putti9ng back his own miss with 1:35 to play in the game making it a one possession game 59-56.

However, that is as close as the Tigers could get as the Pirates limped home and secured the win with some late free throws. In the final 4:30 of the game the Tigers went on a 14-4 run shutting out the Pirates from the floor as their final 4 points all came from the free throw line.

With the win, Adna is now 13-0 in Central 2B league play and 16-2 overall. They remain in 1st place a game in front of Toledo. Napavine is in 3rd place as they drop to 10-3 and 13-4 for the year. Toledo is 12-1 and 13-3.

The Pirates return to action Friday night at Mossyrock and then finish their season next Monday and Wednesday with home games against Morton-White Pass and Toledo.

Napavine takes on MWP Friday night and then has to turn around and travel to Toledo on Saturday for a 2pm huge showdown. They wrap up their regular season next Monday at home against Winlock.

Thorbeckes MVP

The Thorbeckes MVP of the game went to Adna’s Trevin Salme. There was much consideration for Landen Cline and Grayson Humphrey. Had Napavine pulled off the comeback, it would have come down to Tyce Vigre, Cal Bullock and Layton Griffith.
