Saint Martin’s Saints 66, Simon Fraser Red Leafs 55

(Lacey, WA) The Saint Martin’s Saints Women’s Basketball team was looking to notch another GNAC victory and stay in a tie for second place. The Saints have been superb at home and were looking to continue those ways against a feisty Simon Fraser squad.

Saint Martin’s erupted with an 11-4 lead as Jada Travis drilled a pair of three-pointers. The Saints jumped out to a 10-point lead, but Simon Fraser clawed back as Saint Martin’s lead shrank to two points at the end of the first at 19-17. Saint Martin’s built up a nine-point lead in the second quarter, but again the Red Leafs came back to make it a 32-31 game with the Saints leading at the half. Saint Martin’s used a 7-1 run to go up seven points, but once more the Red Leafs wouldn’t go away, and despite only having eight players available, came back again to tie the game at 44 apiece. Saint Martin’s led 46-44 after the third quarter as the final two minutes of the quarter were scoreless. Saint Martin’s built up a double-digit lead in the fourth that proved to be enough as the Saints took home a 66-55 victory.

Former Bellarmine Prep star Jada Travis led all scorers with 27 points on 9-18 shooting, including 5-10 from three-point land and 4-4 from the foul line. Travis added eight rebounds, two assists, and had a block and a steal. Avery Oaster had 13 points and secured nine boards, had three steals, and two rejections. Laiken Hill had 10 points and five rebounds. Saint Martin’s forced 18 turnovers and outscored Simon Fraser on points off turnovers 23-9. Saint Martin’s never trailed in the game as the Saints have now won seven consecutive home games.

The Saints are now 12-8 on the season and remain tied for second in the GNAC with a record of 8-3. Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene are each at 8-3, while Central Washington leads the GNAC at 10-1. Saint Martin’s heads on the road to Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific on Thursday and Saturday this upcoming week.
