(Tukwila, WA) The 4A State girls Championships were rolled off this past weekend at Bowlero lanes in Tukwila. Day 1 on Wednesday the 30 individual bowlers who qualified joined the 12 5-person teams that qualified for both the team events and each member also compete in the individual competition. The individual competition was held and completed on Wednesday.
The teams took their team totals from Wednesday into the 2nd half of the team competition on Thursday to the 14 game Baker format. The Baker format is where the teams bowl 1 game with 5 players. Bowler 1 will bowl the 1st and 6th frame, bowler 2 2nd and 7th and so on where each team member bowls 2 of the 10 frames.
Individual competition comes down to top 2 from last year
Jayden Thayer of Bonney Lake was trying to defend her individual state championship from last year. To no one’s surprise her main competition Bellingham’s Diva Marsh who was edged out by just 23 pins in the final game of the day last year was in position to knock off Thayer.
After the first 3 games in session 1, Marsh got off to a fast start with a 213 and 223 then struggled with a 157 in her 3rd game but rolled a 593 series to lead the competition.
Thayer bowled opposite opening with a 158 then topping two hundred twice herself with a 215 and 213. She finished the 1st session in 2nd place just 7 pins behind Marsh with a 586 series.
Those two led 3rd place Abby Pine of Skyview who was super consistent with a 172, 179 and 178 for a 529. Just behind Pine was Eisenhower’s Cece Peugh with a 526 after firing a 181, 189 and 151.
Beginning the 2nd session Marsh again struggled a bit with a 160. Thayer jumped at the opening to take the lead with a solid 186 and Peugh threw her hat in the ring closing the gap with a 193.
Thayer and Marsh seemingly were opposite every step of the way as it was Thayer’s turn to struggle and finished her 5th game of the day with just a 122. Marsh got back on track and rallied with a 181 surging to the overall lead picking up 39 pins. Peugh also wasn’t done as she had her best game of the day just missing a 200 with a 196 which was enough to run past Thayer to sit in 2nd place.
Going into the final game Marsh was leading with 934, Peugh at 915 and Thayer in 3rd with 894. Pine continued to be ridiculously consistent adding a 184 and 171 and was 4th just 10 pins behind Thayer for 3rd.
In the final game, Marsh saved her best for last. Going into the final game her 223 in the 2nd game was the top score of the day. Marsh came through with a 225 to put the Championship away finishing with a 566 series and a total pin fall of 1,159. This was Marsh’s 3rd 200+ on the day. This the Bellingham senior’s 1st State Championship.
The 122 in the 5th game ended Thayer’s chance to repeat but she finished strong with her own 3rd 200 of the day with a 200 on the dot. She made up the ground on Peugh who finished with her lowest score of the day a 142. Thayer took the silver medal with a total 1,094 series.
Peugh was in hold on mode for 3rd as Pine again was all around the bulls eye all day and finished with a 168. Although it was her lowest score it was an impressive display of consistency. Pine rolled all 6 games with the 168 as the low and her high game of 184 and she had 4 games in the 170’s.
Peugh did hold on for 3rd with a 1,057 series and Pine finished 4th just 5 pins behind at 1,052.
Mount Rainier’s Ravenna Foley awoke in her 6th game and nearly got into the top 4 as she not only had her best game of the day in game 6 but the highest score of the day blowing out a 237.
Rounding out the top 8 were Alyssa Martinez from Kamiakin in 6th place with her high game of 199, taking 7th was Berlyn Tingley of Rogers her high game was a 193 and finishing 8th was Alex Pine of Skyview led by her high score of a 205.

Skyview Storm goes back-to-back for 2nd straight Team Championship
The Skyview Storm won last year’s State title with overall consistency with 3 members in the top 12 earning a medal and the other two placing 23rd and 4oth out of the 90 bowling positions. Although not challenging for the Individual title having those solid 5 core bowlers helped them on day 1 but really came together as a team on day 2 during the Baker games.
In the Baker’s, spares are what makes the difference so when you have your whole team marking more times than opening you are difficult to beat.
This year’s edition of the Storm took Head Coach Traci Chun’s blueprint and improved on it. Last year their 5 bowlers all finished in the top 40. This year the 5 Storm bowlers all placed in the top 23 of the individual competition.
Led by senior Abby Pine on day one finishing 4th overall with a series of 1,052, sophomore Alex Pine was 8th, junior Bri Hust just missed the medals but finished 13th, sophomore Sam Vanta was 17th and senior Morgan Caden was 23rd overall. This built up a big lead for the Storm heading into day 2 of 334 pins, 4,901-4,567 over Eastmont.
Kamiakin came into day 2 just 42 pins behind the Wildcats at 4,525 and they had a commanding lead over 4th place Eisenhower of 119 pins 4,525-4,406. The top 4 teams earned a trophy so holding onto that 4th place for Ike was their goal on Thursday.
As the 14 Baker games began, Eastmont would have to make up a difference of 24 pins per game. Not impossible but very difficult to say the least. There would have to be some huge big swings which is difficult to do in the Baker rounds.
As the Baker’s began it was clear there would be no miraculous run from Eastmont although they bowled well, the Storm were matching them and in fact, halfway through after 7 Bakers games, the Wildcats had gained exactly 1 pin off the total.
The Wildcats did extend their lead over Kamiakin for 2nd place to 98 pins, more than doubling their lead over the Braves. Kamiakin held an 89 pin lead over Eisenhower as the Cadets were being challenged by Mount Rainier for 4th place and the final team trophy. The Rams picked up 7 pins over the 1st 7 games on Ike and trailed by 15 as they began the second half of the Baker games.
In the final 7 games the race was for 3rd and 4th place with 3 teams scrambling for the 3rd and 4th place trophies. As they entered the 11th game, Kamiakin held 3rd place with a total of 5,933. In 4th was Mount Rainer at 5,924 and Eisenhower 5th at 5,918. Only 15 pins separated all 3 teams.
Despite a 118 in their final game the Kamiakin Braves pulled away in the 12th and 13th games with a 192 and 148 to take the 3rd place trophy with a final total of 6,541.
Neither Mount Rainier nor Eisenhower scored more than 129 in their final 3 games as the Braves separated from those two making it a run for the 4th place hardware. The Rams made their move in the 10th and 11th games with a two game total of 356 while the Cadets scored 300. This pushed the Rams past Ike and they outscored the Cadets by 38 pins for 4th place.
Skyview finished off strong with a total pin count of 7,105, the only team to break the 7,000 mark. The Storm were very consistent in the Bakers all their games between 130 on the low end to 178. They easily held Eastmont at bay winning by 313 pins giving up just 21 pins to the Wildcats over the 14 Baker games.
This was the 10th appearance in the state tournament for Skyview and their 3rd State Championship winning it last year and in 2023. The Storm with 3 of the last 4 State titles. Skyview is now 3-1-2-0 from the 10 state appearances picking up their 6th placing trophy.
The Wildcat’s 2nd place finish is their first runner-up trophy in school history. This was Eastmont’s 9th state tournament appearance and 7th trophy. They are now 3-1-2-1 in team competition from their 9 appearances.
For Kamiakin this was their 4th trip to the state team tournament and their 4th trophy adding their second 3rd place finish to go with a State Championship and a 2nd place finish.
This was the 1st ever team entry for Mount Rainier in school history and they came away with the 4th place trophy.
