TACOMA, WASH
The Sumner Spartans captured their sixth consecutive 4A SPSL Championship on Saturday night, defeating the Olympia Bears 52-30 for the second straight season in the league title game. The victory continued Sumner’s run of dominance in the SPSL and marked another milestone moment for senior Kawehi Borden, who surpassed 1,000 career points during the championship game.
Sumner set the tone early behind the sharpshooting of Kessa Nohr. Nohr connected on multiple three-pointers in the opening quarter, including a shot from nearly 45 feet, as the Spartans built a commanding early lead. Kawehi Borden, Madison Hughes, and Zoaye Reed also contributed from beyond the arc, helping Sumner open the game on an 18-4 run and take that advantage into the end of the first quarter.
Olympia responded to begin the second quarter with a 5-0 run, with Junie Hanson leading the Bears by scoring seven points in the period. Despite the push from Olympia, Sumner maintained control and went into halftime with a 29-19 lead.
The Spartans put the game away in the second half with a dominant defensive effort. Sumner limited Olympia to just three points in the third quarter while extending the lead to 41-22. The defensive pressure continued into the fourth quarter as Sumner closed out the game and secured the 52-30 championship victory.
With the win, Sumner repeated as SPSL champions against Olympia and extended its league championship streak to six consecutive seasons.
