Basketball Round-up from The Columbian
Black Hills 47, Columbia River 43 (OT)
(Tumwater, WA) This game was filled with mini-streaks but neither team could shake the other. Early on it was tied 9-9 when Black Hills finished the 1st quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 14-9. The Wolves may have thought this would be a chance to put some distance between them and the visiting Rapids but instead Columbia River battled back and took a 21-19 lead at the break after holding the Wolves to just 5 points.
Gracie Glavin and Mikayla King led the Rapids with 6 while the Wolves’ Ellie Johnson also had 6 points as the offense was a bit sporadic for both sides and the scoring well spread out.
Offense remained a premium in the 3rd quarter with neither team reaching 9 points but the Wolves getting those 2 points back and they were tied at 27 through 3 quarters.
The 4th quarter question was could someone break-out of the scoring slump? King did step up scoring 5 of her 11 and Olivia Carroll added 4 including a huge 3 ball which looked like it was the winning shot giving the Rapids a 2 point lead. Columbia River added a free throw and led 40-37 with just 22-seconds to play.
The Wolves’ Natalie Buchanan saved her best for the final 8 minutes scoring 11 in the 4th quarter including draining a massive 3-point shot with just 7 seconds to play. That followed a terrific defensive play from Tyler Venable who had to scramble to get the a potential Rapids steal back and over to Buchanan as the clock ticked down.
This forced an extra 4-minutes to play in overtime. With the score tied at 42, Ellie Johnson for Black Hills stepped up with a nice little 8 footer that hit all net and gave the Wolves a 44-42 lead. That would end up being the winning bucket as the rest of the scoring for both sides came from the free throw line and the Wolves defense clamped down to win the O-T period 7-3 for a 47-43 victory.
The Wolves improved to 14-8 and move on to the semifinals for a chance to advance to the district championship and the state tournament. The Wolves will travel to Woodland on Monday to face Mark Morris at 7:45pm.
Columbia River falls into the consolation bracket and takes on Washougal Monday night at Rigdefield in a loser out game tipping off at 7:45. The Rapids are now 13-9 for the season.
Thorbeckes MVP of the Game
Tyler Venable and Ellie Johnson had solid performances for the Wolves in this game but without Natalie Buchanan who scored 13 of her 16 points in the 4th quarter and OT they would not have won. Buchanan’s hot hand late was the difference in this game.
Had the Rapids got the win, Gracie Glavin, Mikayla King and Olivia Carroll would have been considered for the MVP of the game.
