In a battle of two of the finest players in the state of Washington. Shayla Cordis scored 24 points, with 16 in the fourth quarter alone for the North Thurston Rams to overcome Oliviyah Edwards’ 30 points in a 52-47 win over the Lincoln Abes. With the win, North Thurston clinches a berth in the State Tournament, and a District Semifinal appearance against White River. Lincoln with the loss face Bellarmine on Wednesday night with their season on the line.
Monday’s battle was a rematch of a meeting in December won by North Thurston 71-54. Lincoln had beaten NPSL regular season Decatur several days prior while, North Thurston won the PSL League Championship after losing their last two games. The game began with Oliviyah Edwards showing why she is headed to Tennessee to be a Volunteer next season. Edwards scored 9 of Lincoln’s 11 first quarter points.
Shayla Cordis for North Thurston endeavored early foul trouble, taxed with a pair of fouls in the first quarter. Sierra Cordis scored late in the quarter to give the Rams a 14-11 lead after one. Lincoln Head Coach Melanie Jones emphasized how important defense was for the Abes. North Thurston was held to five second quarter points, with Lincoln leading 23-19 after one half.
The third quarter continued to be Lincoln’s for the taking. Oliviyah Edwards buried a straight away three point to give the Abes a 13 point lead near the end of the quarter. With Lincoln having last year’s third place team in State on the ropes, the Rams needed a spark. Northern Arizona commit Shayla Cordis turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter. With Cordis averaging eight steals a game, the future Lumberjack did what she does best. Cordis rallied the Rams with multiple steals leading to buckets. A Sierra Cordis three pointer gave North Thurston the lead 44-41 with two minutes left. Seconds later, Shayla Cordis came up with another steal, and scored through contact for the and 1. North Thurston never relinquished the lead to come away with a scintillating come from behind win.
