(Lakewood, WA) One year ago the Port Angeles Roughriders went to Mel Ninnis Memorial Gymnasium and beat the Clover Park Timberwolves 59-57 to end the T-Wolves season while continuing on in the District 3 2A boys basketball tournament. Fast forward to Tuesday night and the teams would meet in the same spot and while their seasons weren’t on the line, the winner would move on to the district semifinals while also giving themselves two chances to win one game to advance to the 2A state tournament.
After starting the season 2-4, Clover Park figured things out and rattled off 15 wins in a row on their way to the #2 seed in the district tournament which included a first round bye. On the other side, and up and down season for Port Angeles saw the Roughriders lose their final three regular season games before defeating Orting in a loser-out game to open up the district tournament just three days prior. With some pressure off, Port Angeles looked to show off the strength of the Olympic 2A league while Clover Park looked for revenge against the team that cut their previous season short.
A little bit of added pressure was mixed in for Clover Park senior guard Marshall Scott. Scott entered the night just 18 points shy of the all-time scoring record at Clover Park behind Davian Harris. Despite feeling under the weather, nothing was going to stop Scott from taking the floor with the team he has grown so close with throughout his four years with the Timberwolves as they searched for revenge and history all in the same night.
Clover Park 64, Port Angeles 43
Defense stole the show early as neither team got much going in the beginning of the game. Both teams would rely on a number of different players to put up the hard-to-find points in the opening quarter. A total of eight different players scored in the first quarter of play but the Port Angeles turnovers dug them a hole as they struggled to handle the Clover Park press. After the first eight minutes of play, it was Clover Park with a 15-6 lead.
The defensive battle continued into the 2nd with reserves entering the game and not able to get shots to drop either. There weren’t many opportunities at the free throw line either as Jakhi Pegram shot the only two free throws of the half in the 2nd quarter with just six fouls in total in the first half of play. Marshall Scott would be able to attack the basket for six first half points but big three pointers from Ijohn Taylor and Colin Boykin helped create some breathing room for the T-Wolves. Port Angeles did get comfortable against the press and began to find more offensive success behind Hunter Flores but it was Clover Park still leading at halftime 27-15.
Whatever head coach Anthony Crawford told his team at the halftime break worked because the Timberwolves came out firing on all cylinders in the 3rd quarter. Clover Park’s aggressive defense led to fast break points as they began to run away from Port Angeles who continued to struggle scoring the basketball. The T-Wolves went on a 23-7 run towards the later part of the 3rd quarter to push their lead up to 28. Kielar Point would not let it be all T-Wolves however as he scored the final eight points of the quarter for Port Angeles but the Roughriders still trailed 50-30 going into the 4th.
With the game in hand for Clover Park, they kept their star senior Marshall Scott on the floor to try to get him to break the school record for points scored in a career on his home floor at Mel Ninnis Memorial Gymnasium. It was fitting for Scott to break the record their as the son of the man the gym was named after in Ryan Ninnis was the first person Marshall brought up when talking about the record.
“He (Ryan) has just always been there for me with positive words. Not just about basketball, but about school and life too.”
Scott also gave head coach Anthony Crawford a lot of credit for believing in him from his freshman year when Scott got playing time in the postseason. That playoff feel is what made Scott decide to commit everything to basketball.
“The playoff feel is just different. That made me kind of lock in and helped me decide that basketball is for me.”
In the most fitting way possible, Marshall Scott broke the points record late in the 4th quarter. After being fouled, Scott went to the line and sank both his free throws to run his career point total to 1,322 and etch his name in the record books at Clover Park High School. Yet there was no celebration. No loud announcement until after the game or emotional moment for Scott on the floor. He quietly subbed out of the game, embraced his coach and teammates on the bench and began to help out the young guys entering the game. That is just the kind of player Scott is. A quiet leader with the respect of his teammates and peers.
“I am so happy for him. He deserves this moment,” said head coach Anthony Crawford.
Clover Park athletic director Bre Giove called Marshall Scott, “One of the best untold stories in high school sports in the state.”
It was never about that though for Scott. He cared about moving his team closer to the Yakima Valley SunDome and the state tournament. While he has his record, Scott says that isn’t the goal.
“It is all about state. We want to get over there and show everybody how good we are.”
To make the story even better, Scott didn’t model his game after anybody…because he doesn’t watch sports. There was no inspiration from Lebron James or Steph Curry. It was all driven by Scott’s desire to be the best that he can be both on and off the floor. He is Clover Park through and through as he rarely plays away from his high school team.
Clover Park is now just one win away from reaching the state tournament. A proud program and community that has had a rough stretch has put themselves back in the spotlight and back on the doorstep of the ultimate goal, a state title. And they have done it led by the silent assassin that leads the team by action. He is not the next anybody. He is the first and only Marshall Scott.
Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Marshall Scott for the Clover Park Timberwolves. Scott etched his name in the record books by becoming the all-time leading scorer in Clover Park history in just the latest of his career full of historic accomplishments.
The win moves Clover Park to 18-4 as they notch their 16th win in a row and they now advance to the District 3 2A boys basketball semifinals where the will play the winner of Sequim and Bainbridge on Thursday at 6pm at Bremerton High School. Port Angeles falls to 11-8 on the season and will also play on Thursday in an elimination game. They will travel to either Sequim or Bainbridge at 7pm.
