Now that the 2B State Tournament brackets have been released and the schedules are set, let’s take a look at who’s in and who’s out, comparing the teams from last year to this year and other notable points of interest.

Let’s get started!

6th (2) Brewster

Last year’s top 8 seeds
1. Rainier
2. Adna
3. Brewster
4. Reardan
5. Napavine
6. Mt Vernon Christian
7. Cle Elum-Roslyn
8. Northwest Christian (Colbert)

This year’s top 8 seeds
1. Napavine
2. NW Christian (Colbert)
3. Brewster
4. Reardan
5. Cle Elum-Roslyn
6. Toutle Lake
7. Adna
8. Mt Vernon Christian

Last year’s best underdogs

Liberty (Spangle) was the 10 seed and came away with the 4th place trophy. On their way to the hardware they beat #7 Cle-Elum Roslyn in the quarters, lost in the semi’s then got to Saturday with a win over #6 Mt Vernon Christian. The Lancers then handled #3 Brewster for the 4th place trophy.

But the best underdog of the 2B is right at the top, the State Champion NW Christian Crusaders. NWC stunned the #1 Rainier Mountaineers in the Regional and then went on a run in the Spokane Arena knocking off #10 Liberty (Spangle) in the quarterfinals. Next up was #4 Reardan and the Crusaders won by 4 setting up a #8 vs #2 Adna and the Crusaders did not flinch winning the Championship 73-66. The 8 seed finished the state tournament with wins against the #1, #2 and #4 seeds.

This year’s underdogs to watch

This may seem odd but we think that NW Christian coming in as the 2 seed is putting them in an underdog mindset. They are the defending State champs as an 8 seed. They came back this year to nearly run the table with a 22-1 record losing only to Reardan the #4 State seed 48-45. The Crusaders did beat Reardan twice this season. The #1 seed Napavine is 19-4 and NWC could certainly take this as a slight and use that to make a run to defend the trophy in their trophy case.

Let’s stay in the NE 2B League North with the 9 seeded Davenport Gorillas. Davenport is 20-5 on the season and finished 3rd in their league to NWC and 4 seeded Reardan. The Gorillas 5 losses are all to NWC and Reardan. They lost to NWC 45-35, 46-29 and 54-38 for an average of 11 points per game. They lost to Reardan 49-45 and 56-49 or by 5 points game and overall 8.6 points for all 5 losses. It wouldn’t take much for the Gorillas to pull off an upset or two, they know how to win with 20 victories and a missed shot here or foul trouble there it only takes one game to change everything.

Another team to keep an eye are the Toutle Lake Fighting Ducks. Toutle Lake came into their district tournament with a 13-6 overall record and were the 8 seed. The Ducks then reeled off 4 straight wins to get to the District Championship game where they fell short to the state #1 seed Napavine. Toutle Lake is putting it together at the right time.

Last year’s best Favorites

Adna, Brewster, Reardan and Napavine were seeds 2-5 and all trophied. None won it with NWC’s run but each of the seeds made solid runs and all 4 are back this year.

This year’s best chance Favorites

Right at the top. #1 Napavine finished 19-4 but they did not hesitate to take on upper classification teams. They played 10 games against 1A and higher classifications with 3 games against 1A, 4 2A and 3 3A teams. Their losses were to state seeded #1 King’s in 1A, #1 seed Lynden and 6 seed WF West in 2A and 3A White River the 12 seed.

Their wins included beating the 3A 2 seed Snohomish, 3rd seeded Lynden Christian in 1A along with the 1A 12 seed Montesano. They also beat Tumwater, Columbia River and Lakes. Napavine is as prepared as any team ever to make a big run to the Title. The question is where will they and the defending Champs NWC end up? Some have said the girls 2B is one of the most wide open tournaments out of 12. But at the same time we don’t think anyone would be surprised to see a 1 vs 2 for all the marbles.

Biggest surprises!

Who’s the most surprising they are in?

#14 Orcas Island has had very limited success in state tournament action with their best finish and only trophy a 5th place finish in 2009. They lost their opening game and won 3 in a row to the lone trophy for the Vikings. They’ve played 25 state tournament games and have a 4-21 record with 3 of those wins in 2009 and the other win in 1990. They have been 1 and out in their last 4 trips to state with the last appearance in 2023. Can the Vikings get that long elusive win?

Who’s the most surprising they are out?

The NE 2B League appears to have been a bit down this year with only 2nd place Colfax getting to the State Tournament. League Champs Freeman and tied for 2nd Lind-Ritzville-Sprague both fell short and 4th place  Liberty (Spangle), last year’s 10 seed who made that nice run to Saturday and the 4th place trophy also missed the cut.

Final Thoughts

Like we mentioned before, many think this tournament is one of the most wide open tournaments of all. No doubt any of the top 8 could win it all. Then add in Davenport at #9 as one we said to keep an eye on could be coming from a Wednesday game to a trophy on Saturday.

Let’s not count out the Colfax Bulldogs at the 10 seed. Many know of the high emotions at Colfax HS with their boys Head Coach, Reece Jenkin, battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Moments like this can galvanize teams and even though Jenkin is the boys coach he is beloved and has brought the whole Bulldog community together so you can bet the lady Bulldogs will want to honor him and their community and there could be a lot of extra motivation going for Colfax.

But our prediction is just when it looks like a tournament or bracket is set-up for surprises many times it does not happen. We think this is going to be a 1 vs 2 Championship with the top 2 seeds coming in with formidable resume’s. Add to NWC no doubt will be using the 2 seed as a slight after winning it all last year and coming in with a 22-1 record.

Napavine’s record this season is eye-popping and have shown they can play with the best of teams from 3A to 2B. If it is a 1 vs 2 it is going to be a game you will not want to miss.

Last year’s Trophy winners
Champion (1) Columbia
2nd (2) Freeman
3rd (3) Reardan
4th (8) Northwest Christian (Colbert)
5th (4) Colfax
6th (11) Okanogan

Last year’s top 8 seeds
1. Columbia
2. Freeman
3. Reardan
4. Colfax
5. Lake Roosevelt
6. Toledo
7. Adna
8. NW Christian (Colbert)

This year’s top 8 seeds
1. Colfax
2. NW Christian (Colbert)
3. Okanogan
4. Toledo
5. Tri-Cities Prep
6. Reardan
7. Napavine
8. Liberty Bell

Last year’s best underdogs

Three double digit seeds won in the round of 12. All three lost in the quarters but #11 Okanogan got to the 4th/6th place game on Saturday and finished with the 6th place trophy. The Bulldogs opened up with a 2 point win over La Salle at regionals then stunned #6 Toledo 87-54. They lost to #4 Colfax in the quarters then beat #10 Liberty Bell in the consolation round to get to Saturday where they dropped to #8 NW Christian in the 4th/6th place game.

#10 Liberty Bell and #12 Tri-Cities Prep got to Friday before having their season come to an end and #8 NW Christian was the same seed as their girls team who went all the way to win the girls Championship. The boys didn’t match that run but did well to take home the 4th place trophy.

So just how good were these underdogs? All 4 are back in this year’s State Tournament and all 4 are in the top 8 seeds. NWC is the 2 seed,  Okanogan the 3, Tri-Cities Prep 5th and Liberty Bell the 8 seed. That’s a strong move from all 4 teams to come right back with better records and seasons for all 4 teams.

This year’s underdogs to watch

The first underdog to keep an eye on are the defending Champs Columbia. They were the 1 seed and ran the table beating 2 seed Freeman 47-45 for the State Championship. No doubt they lost some key players but still they are back and the players have that State experience. They were 6-10 on January 23rd and have since been on a tear winning 8 of 9 and are now 14-11. The defending Champs are putting things together at the right time and may be one of the scarier teams to face if you don’t take the Coyotes seriously.

The 13 seed Ilwaco Fishermen started off 0-2 then won 15 in a row which was enough to earn the #1 seed in their District Tournament. Since then the Fishermen hot streak came to an end and are coming in losing 2 of their last 3 games. So despite limping into state, if they can find that groove during the 15 game winning streak they could make some noise for sure.

Last year’s runners-up the Freeman Scotties are the #10 seed. This season has been up and down with a 15-9 overall record and they just never could get on a big winning streak. The most wins they had in a row was 4. It feels like they haven’t been able to put it all together for any stretch of time this year. Which we think makes them dangerous. If you underestimate them we know this is a very solid program and all it takes is one stretch of playing your best. It won’t surprise us if they are playing on Saturday.

Then there’s #9 Adna whose offense can light up the board at anytime. Multiple shooters but they also can go cold. If you catch them when they’re shooting well you’re gonna have to put some points on the board. They come in with a 21-4 overall record and scored less than 60 points 4 times and less than 50 once. That was against the 2A 2seed RA Long in a holiday tournament game. Adna’s inconsistency is their biggest hurdle but they have the capability of beating any team on any given day.

Last year’s best Favorites

Last year’s best favorites were the top 4 seeds. The seeding committee killed it with 1 thru 4 in the semifinals with 1 and 2 playing for the Championship and #1 Columbia winning. Seeds 3 and 4 played for 3rd with the 3 seed Reardan winning and 4 seed Colfax taking 5th.

This year’s best chance Favorites

There’s no getting around this one, #1 Colfax. The emotion that the Bulldog community are feeling with their Head Coach Reece Jenkin battling pancreatic cancer. Colfax is undefeated and trying to match Bulldog Coaching legend Bob Bafus and the 1977-78 team that went 26-0 to win the State Championship.

This is a team on a mission and you can tell they are focused on their coach and themselves. They are not getting distracted with look at what this team did or who they beat they are locked in on their mission. When teams get an additional reason or motivation to complete what they started makes them extra tough and the Bull dogs are going to be a huge mountain to climb to knock them off.

Biggest surprises!

Who’s the most surprising they are in?

The 16th seeded Warden Cougars are making only their 4th state tournament appearance in school history. the Cougars had one good run with state appearances in 2015, 16 and 17 with their best run in 2017 getting to Friday. Warden is looking to earn their first boys hoops trophy in school history.

Final Thoughts

If Colfax runs the table and finishes 25-0 to hoist the State Championship all other teams will be disappointed they didn’t get the top prize. But it’s hard to imagine with the backstory of Coach Jenkin and what this team and community have been through very publicly that you also won’t feel good for the Bulldogs.

Many programs as far away as Adna and Napavine on the Westside had special nights this season to show support for Coach Jenkin which should highlight that he is not only beloved in Colfax but all over the state.

It’s human nature of competitors to want to win but sometimes other conditions transcend the whole experience. So, yes it is ok for anyone to root hard for your team but if they fall short to feel good for a team like Colfax and the year they’ve had. Many teams experience some tough times or situations, this story is the one that caught the attention of the entire state.

If the Bulldogs fall especially early in the regionals or quarterfinals, it will open the door for a free-for-all with literally any team stepping up and getting hot at the right time with a solid chance of winning it all. But setting the backstory aside, Colfax is still the clear team to beat with an undefeated record heading into regionals.

This is setting up to be one of the most memorable state tournaments of all time and will be something all will remember forever.
