#22 Saint Martin’s Saints 77, Alaska Nanooks 65
(Fairbanks, AK) The Saint Martin’s Saints Men’s Basketball team was looking to clinch the GNAC Regular Season Championship on the road in the penultimate regular season game of the season.
The first half was back-and-forth as the Saints trailed 36-33 heading into the break. Saint Martin’s rallied with another big road second half with a combination of tough defense and timely offense. The Saints had a 44-point second half while holding the Nanooks to 29. Saint Martin’s would clinch the GNAC Regular Season title with a 77-65 victory.
Saint Martin’s was led by Diego Trejo-Delgado, who poured in a game-high 24 points, and pulled down nine rebounds. He nailed three three-pointers and shot 10-16 from the floor. Kaden Hansen had 20 points, including 5-7 from downtown. Patrick Kilfoil had 11 points and five boards. The Saints shot 55% from the floor and 60% from three-point land in the second half. Saint Martin’s controlled the paint offensively, outscoring Alaska 34-18.
This is the fourth GNAC Championship Saint Martin’s has won, and the third one in the last five years. Saint Martin’s is tied for second with Seattle Pacific for most conference titles. Western Washington is only one ahead of the Saints and Falcons with five. Head coach Aaron Landon has become the only coach in GNAC history to win three outright regular-season titles as he continues to break record after record.
Saint Martin’s improves to 22-5 on the season and 14-3 in the GNAC. Saint Martin’s will get the Quarterfinal bye next week at the GNAC Championships as the one-seed. Saint Martin’s hasn’t won the GNAC Championships before, but in a year full of records being shattered, the Saints are the clear favorite to continue to make history.
