Day 3 Semifinals (Winners to Championships, losers to 3rd place game)
Consolation bracket (Losers Out)

Semifinals (Winners to Championship, Losers to 3rd place game)

(1) Rainier Beach 71, (5) Bellarmine Prep 71

As usual the Rainier Beach Vikings got off to a bit of a slow start in the semifinal against 5 seed Bellarmine Prep and led the Lions only 11-9 after the 1st 8 minutes. It didn’t take long for the Vikings coaching staff to remind their players that it was this Bellarmine Prep team who upset them last year in the Regional round forcing the Vikings to play on opening day. It didn’t slow them down as they won it all but if they stumbled here there would be no repeat.

The Viks got the message and quickly heated up to put 24 on the board in the 2nd quarter while holding the Lions to just 10 and led 35-19 at the break. Beach kept the pressure on with their aggressive defense keeping the Lions offense limited in the 3rd and added another 5 points to their lead for a 21 point advantage going into the final 8 minutes. Rainier Beach made sure not to overlook Bellarmine this year and are back in the Title game.

The Vikings are now 23-0 and were led by Micah Ili-Meneese dropped 30 and added 6 of the teams 18 steals. Tyran Stokes scored 15 with 6 rebounds and 4 steals.

Rainier Beach is taking home a trophy for the 24th time out of the last 28 years. Since 1998 the Vikings have 9 State Championships, 6 2nds, a 3rd and 4th, 2 5ths, 6ths and 7ths. Add a 10th Championship from 1988 and the Vikings are shooting for their 11th Gold Ball.

Bellarmine Prep has had a terrific year and will play for 3rd on Saturday. Luke Heisel had a good game with 17, Elliott Stevenson had 10 and Ronnie Wiggins led the Lions in rebounds with 10.

The Lions drop to 23-4 and will play for 3rd place on Saturday at 11:15am against Eastside Catholic.

Rainier Beach will take on the Lincoln Abes for the State Championship at 7pm.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game award went to Micah Ili-Meneese for Rainier Beach.

(7) Lincoln 64, (4) Eastside Catholic 62
The Lincoln Abes got off to a good start with a 16-9 lead after the first quarter but then the Crusaders exploded in the 2nd quarter with a 26 point run doubling the Abes and took a 35-29 lead into halftime.

The 2nd half was a battle with the two teams all square in the 14-14 and Eastside Catholic still leading by 6 heading into the final quarter. The Abes who came into this tournament as one of the hottest teams in the state bulldozing their way as the 7 seed into the semifinals.

Davion Shareef-Dulanaey was on fire and hit some huge shots down the stretch. The key run was with about 3:45 left to play in the game Micah Rouson hit a huge 3 for the Crusaders to go up 58-52. On the return trip Shareef-Dulanaey answers with a 3 and there was a foul called right after the shot away from the ball against E-C. The basket counted and the Abes got possession because it was after the shot and away from the ball.

Lincoln got the ball into Kasey Williams who spun into the lane and scored and just like that a 5-point swing made it 58-57 with about 3 minutes to play. Williams then committed his 5th foul on Tytan McNeal who hit both free throws to go back up 60-57. Shareef-Dulanaey was then fouled and got the freebies to again make it a 1 point game with 2:30 to go.

McNeal answered with 2:20 to play with a short shot from 3 feet to push the Crusader lead back to 3, 62-59. Little did they know that would be the end of scoring for E-C. The Abes then got to work. Off an inbounds play Noah Dennis took the feed and laid it in for his only 2 points of the game and it was 62-61. Shareef-Dulanaey then came back with 1:12 to play and sank what turned out to be the game winning shot to go up 64-62. The two teams exchange possession and the Crusaders got one last chance when Steven Sun passed the ball to Rouson who went to take a 3 point shot for the win and Shareef-Dulanaey slapped the shot out of his hands to end the game.

Shareef-Dulanaey led the Abes with 32 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and one huge blocked shot. No other Abe scored in double figures but Justus Holt just missed a double double with 9 points and 9 boards.

The Crusaders just missed getting to the Title game in a frustrating loss. It was a tremendous effort led by a well balanced offense with 5 players in double digits. McNeal and Yabi Aklog each had 12, London Walsh added 11 and Rouson and Sun finished with 10. E-C drops to 19-9 and will face Bellarmine Prep at 11:15 Saturday morning for 3rd place.

Lincoln is shooting for their 4th State Championship in school history winning it in 2001 and 2002 and back in 1975. They last took home hardware in 2018 with the 3rd place trophy.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Davion Shareff-Dulanaey.

Consolation (loser out)
(11) Edmonds-Woodway 64, (2) O’Dea 55
Coming into this tournament many believed the O’Dea Irish would be the team to give top seed Rainier Beach their biggest challenge. 11 seed Edmonds-Woodway wanted to remind everyone it was them in the Championship game last year and they came in battling against the Irish sending them home before trophy day.

The Warriors trailing by 1 at the half then eased away in the 2nd half to get to Saturday. The Warriors’ Dennis Karl led all scorers with 21, William Alseth added 17 and 8 boards and and Grant Williams had 15. E-W improves to 24-4 and will play in the 4th/6th place game against the 3 seed Mt Spokane on Saturday at 9:30 in the morning.

O’Dea ends their season in a disappointing way and finished with a 19-6 overall mark. Josiah Bowman led the Irish with 16 and Peyton Brooks added 13.

The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP of the game went to Dennis Karl for the Warriors.

(3) Mt Spokane 73, (8) Bellevue 58
The Mt Spokane Wildcats bounced back after a flat performance in the quarterfinals with a fast start against the Wolverines. The Cats jumped out to a 38-23 lead in the 1st half and extended it to 63-41 after 3. Mt Spokane had 10 players get in the scorebook led by the 20 of Jaden Ghoreishi with 9 rebounds. Only Jaceten Reijonen would also top 10 points with 11.

The Wildcats improve to 19-7and get to trophy Saturday where they will play for the 4th place hardware. The 3 seed will face 11 seed Edmonds-Woodway who knocked off #2 O’Dea. Game time on Saturday is 9:30am.

Bellevue had their season come to an end and got 15 points from Tayten Jones, 12 by Jackson Skaggs and Eduardo Molina had 10. The Wolverines fall just short of the trophy round and ended with a 20-10 record.

The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP of the game went to Jaden Ghoreishi for Mt Spokane.

9p (6) Eastside Catholic vs (2) Snohomish

Consolation (loser out)
(7) Evergreen (Van) 51, (11) Lakeside (Sea) 46
The Evergreen Plainsmen just set school history and will have completed the best season of girls basketball in school history. This is only their 4th appearance and had never won a State play-off game prior to this year. But with this win over Lakeside the Plainsmen are guaranteed to bring home the very first state trophy to add to the Evergreen trophy case.

The Plainsmen held the Lions to just 15 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and they used that to build a lead they would never give up. Amaya Pachal led Evergreen with 16 points, Harmony Fallin had 15 and Kimora Ross chipped in 10. Evergreen improves to 22-6 and will play in the 4th/6th place game on Saturday morning at 9:30.

Lakeside finished their season just short of the trophy round with a final 19-12 record. Kaliya Woodard led the Lions with 15 and 12 rebounds. Anvi Bhatia added 11.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Evergreen’s Amaya Paschal.

(12) White River 47, (9) Stanwood 28

The White River Hornets and Stanwood Spartans were both coming off tough losses in the quarters. Stanwood especially losing in OT and playing in the 9pm game against the 2 seed Snohomish. The challenge is to be able to put the loss aside and get back focused and sometimes that is a lot to ask of high school athletes.

The Spartans just didn’t have it on this Friday and the Hornets could feel that vulnerability and took full advantage holding the Spartans to just 13 points through 3 quarters while they chalked up 42. The Hornets took their foot off the gas and cruised to trophy Saturday and are going home with hardware.

Malia Froemke led the Hornets with 18 and Kaijah Young had 4 but led in rebounds with 9. White River is now 20-7 and the 12 seed will play for 4th place Saturday morning against 7 seed Evergreen at 9:30.

Stanwood’s Ellalee Wortham led the Spartans with 14 points and just missed doubling up grabbing 9 rebounds. The Spartans ended their season with a 21-7 record.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Malia Froemke for the Hornets.

Day 3 Semifinals (Winners to Championships, losers to 3rd place game)
Consolation bracket (Losers Out)

Semifinals (Winners to Championship, Losers to 3rd place game)

(1) Davis 57,  (11) Kennedy Catholic 38
The defending Champions are focused on keeping that State Championship trophy in Yakima as the Davis Pirates led the surprising Kennedy Catholic Lancers from start to finish. The Pirates balance is incredible as they had 4 players in double figures which can be tough to get to with a total of 57 for the game. It just shows there is not one player to take away from this super talented Pirate team.

The deception is quite clear as Davis never scored more than 16 in a quarter or less than 13 and it felt like the Lancers could make a run to get back in it then you  look up and there’s a 19 point difference. Davis’s defense is all about pressure and quickness and keeps their opponents off-balance from the start.

Davis limited Kennedy Catholic to a 24% shot rate and 4 of 20 from the 3 point line at 20%. The Pirates shot 38% from the floor and 5 of 17 from 3 land or 29% and hit 16 of 21 free throws shooting the freebies at 76%. The Pirates dominated the board out rebounding K-C 44-23 with Cheyenne Hull pulling down 18. They led in blocked shots 2-1, steals 7-3 and assists 10-3.

Kennedy Catholic no doubt was looking to stun the world and pull the upset but the Pirates were too much. The Lancers coming in as an 11 seed and was one of two 11 seeds to get to the semifinals in all 12 tournaments going on this weekend with the other being the 2A Columbia River Rapids boys team.

The Lancers were led by Jayden Fitzgerald with 18 points and 7 rebounds. K-C is now 20-8 for the season. This is a spectacular run the Lancers are on and will be playing in the 3rd/5th place game on Saturday at 11:15am. Regardless of whether it’s the 3rd or 5th place trophy it will be Kennedy’s first trophy since 2011.

Davis is making their 4th straight state tournament appearance. Prior to 2023 the Pirates had made a total of 3 state tournaments in 2014, 2013 and 1987 and had a total of 1 state win. They made it in 2023 and got knocked out in the round of 12, then took 3rd in 2024, won it all last year and looking to add their 2nd Championship trophy.

The well balanced offense was led by Deets Parrish with 15, Hull had 14 to go with her 18 boards, Isa Garcia also had 14 and Averie Brandt scored 10.

The Pirates improve to 23-2 and will play for all the marbles Saturday evening at 5pm.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game award went to Deets Parrish for Davis.

(8) Sumner 52, (6) Lake Washington 41

It’s Deja Vu all over again as the Sumner Spartans as the 8 seed are headed to the State Championship to face the 1 seed Davis Pirates, just like last year. The Pirates were able to beat Sumner for the Title but these pesky Spartans are back to take another crack at Davis.

The Spartans faced a solid Lake Washington team and they traded blows like a heavy weight fight with Sumner leading after the 1st quarter 15-14 and then pushed it to a 29-27 halftime advantage. They pushed in the 3rd 10-10 and this defensive back and forth continued into the 4th quarter.

Sumner put up 13 in the 4th but their suffocating defense and a horrible time for the Kangaroos to go cold only managed 4 points and the Spartans are headed for the big game on Saturday.

Sumner led by Kawehi Borden’s 28 points shot 40% from the floor and 3 of 12 from behind the arc for a 25% clip. The Kangs shot 28% and 21% from deep. The Spartans had a big 39-28 advantage on the boards and all spelled trouble for L-W to get their offense going.

The Spartans have 3 trophies in their trophy case a pair of 2nd’s and a 5th. They are looking for their 1st Championship. Helping Borden was Raymiah Jackson who tallied a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Lake Washington was led by Ashley Uusitalo with 13 points, Ileana Olteanu had 12 and Julia Benthen scored 6 and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Kangaroos, now 20-8, will play for 3rd place on Saturday where they face Kennedy Catholic with a 11;15am tip off time.

Sumner improves to 27-4 and will take on the Davis Pirates for the 4th time in 2 years. The Pirates hold a 2-1 advantage and the Spartans are looking to even that score with the biggest in Sumner’s program history. The Championship will is set as the 5pm game.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game was a clear choice in Kawehi Borden.

Consolation (loser out)
(5) Gonzaga Prep 50, (10) Lake Stevens 42
The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups used a big 24 point 3rd quarter to surge past the Lake Stevens Vikings who were trying to upset the Bullpups and get to trophy Saturday. G-P added to their 2 point lead heading into the 4th to extend their season by 1 game and 1 day and guaranteed themselves a trophy.

The Bullpups offense was shared with 6 scorers and 3 in double figures. Quinn Pederson had 14 and 6 rebounds, 13 and 6 for Aylah Cornwall and Laura Thompson had 12 points with 5 boards.

Gonzaga Prep improved to 22-3 and will play the 8am game Saturday morning in the 4th/6th place game against 4 seed Woodinville.

Lake Stevens had their season come to an end and they finished with a 22-5 overall record. Kendel Kuehl led the scoring with 12 and Noelani Tupua added 11.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the Bullpups’ Quinn Pederson.

(4) Woodinville 64, (2) Union 55
The Falcons have been in this position before as this will be the 6th straight year Woodinville will take home hardware. The Falcons led start to finish over the 2 seed Union Titans. Leading the Falcons was Kamryn Wille with 23 and 12 rebounds. Sienna Bieler knocked in 21 with 5 boards and 3 assists and Jazlyn Wilkerson double-doubled with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Woodinville is now 26-5 and will get up early on Saturday to face Gonzaga Prep for the 4th place trophy at 8am.

Union had such a great year and they fell short in Tacoma with a tight loss Thursday to Sumner and had their season come to an end. Brooklynn Haywood was again terrific with 25 points to lead all scorers. Myla Larry doubled up with 17 and 10 rebounds. Union finished the year 25-4.

The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP of the game went to Woodinville’s Kamryn Wille.

(1) Mount Si 74, (6) Puyallup 66
When you’re the #1 seed and you fall short in the quarterfinals and see your Championship aspirations go up in smoke one of the most challenging things is to turn around in less than 24 hours and play a loser out game against another team that also was good enough to get to the quarters.

The Mount Si Wildcats did not play their best but when they needed the buckets they dug down and got them refusing to be a 1 seed who goes home empty handed. The Wildcats held on to push the Puyallup Vikings to OT. That’s where Mount Si surged to a lead the Vikings couldn’t close and extended their season by one day.

The Wildcats were led by Brady Hennig with 21 points, Marcus Heide and Latt Ford each chipped in with double doubles with Heide scoring 20 and grabbing 14 rebounds and Ford with 12 and 10. The Cats are now 21-2 and will play for 4th place at 9:30 Saturday morning.

Puyallup went double OT on Thursday in the quarterfinals against Gonzaga Prep and had to go another OT today and they will be thinking about that one shot or one thing they could have done and maybe playing for a Championship instead of going home empty handed. A tough way to end their season but they battled incredibly hard and ended up 22-8 for the year. Will Nasinec led the Vikings with 17, Porter Richardson had 11 with Nicholas Jones adding 10.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Marcus Heide for Mount Si.

(4) Glacier Peak 64, (8) West Valley (Yak) 42
The Glacier Peak, Grizzlies came out focused and put up a 38-21 lead at the half and never looked back West Valley never got their offense rolling while the trio of scorers for G-P were not ready for the season to be over.

Zachary Albright was fantastic with a game high 24 points and 13 rebounds and 3 steals. Paulos Mulugeta had 14 points and 8 boards with Reed Nagel getting the baker’s dozen 13 and 6 rebounds.

West Valley’s Parker Mills was the only one in double digits for the Rams with 12 and led in rebounds as well with 7. The Rams season came to a close and they ended up 20-4 on the year.

Glacier Peak improves to 22-3 and will play on Championship Saturday in the 4th/6th place game at 9:30am. The Grizzlies will be facing the #1 seed Mount Si who was upset in the quarters and had to go to OT to get to the 4th place game.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game award went to the Grizzlies’ Zachary Albright.

Day 2 Quarterfinals
Winners to Semifinals, Losers to Consolation bracket

(5) Bellarmine Prep 60, (11) Edmonds-Woodway 48
A 1-point difference at the half had the Bellarmine Prep Lions up 30-29 over Edmonds-Woodway Warriors. The 3rd quarter became the difference maker with the Warriors only able to sink 3 points. The Lions didn’t run-away with 13 but that 11 point lead was too much to overcome in the final 8 minutes.

The Lions are headed to the semifinals Friday afternoon at 3:45 to take on the top seed Rainier Beach. The Lions had a balanced offensive attack with 3 in double figures. Ronnie Wiggins led the scoring with 18 along with 9 rebounds a blocked shot and 3 steals. Birk Johnston had 14 and Elliott Stevenson knocked down 12. Luke Heisel just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds. B-P is now 23-3 on the year.

Edmonds-Woodway survived the loser out game on Wednesday and will have a shot at a trophy if they can win on Friday in the consolation bracket when they take on 2 seed, O’Dea at 9am. The Warriors were led by the 17 points of Dennis Karl and 15 points from William Alseth.

The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP went to Elliott Stevenson for the Lions.

(1) Rainier Beach 85,  (2) O’Dea 68
The target is big on the Rainier Beach Vikings and one of the teams that have threatened the Vikings run to repeat as State Champs was the O’Dea Irish. And guess who they had to face in the quarterfinals and not the Championship? The Irish who dropped into the round of 12 after losing in the regional round.

O’Dea came out with plenty of fight and sprinted out to a 20-14 lead after the first 8 minutes. The Irish kept up the pressure and went to halftime with a 37-32 lead. But when the Vikings came out in the 2nd half it was a different story. Beach put up 23 and held O’Dea to 10 in the 3rd to surge past the Irish after 3 with a 55-47 lead.

The Vikings poured it on in the 4th with 30 points led by Tyran Stokes with a triple double, 24 points to lead all scorers, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. 3 other Vikings were in double digits with JJ Crawford hitting 18, Micah Ili-Meneese added 17 and 13 went to Kam Babbs.

Rainier Beach improves to 22-0 and they advance to the semifinals on Friday. The Vikings will face the 5 seed Bellarmine Prep at 3:45pm with a trip to the State Championship on the line.

O’Dea’s Peyton Brooks had a solid game with 18, Josiah Bowman scored 16 and Brian Webster added 14. The Irish fall to 19-5 and will play in a loser out consolation game on Friday at 9am against Edmonds-Woodway.

The Sumner Holiday Inn MVP went to the triple-doubler Tyran Stokes.

(4) Eastside Catholic 53, (3) Mt Spokane 37
The Crusaders stumbled in the regionals and have certainly righted the ship so to speak with a big win on Wednesday to get into the quarters. Today they used a big 18-8 2nd quarter to kick-start the 16 point win over an always tough Mt Spokane squad to get an invitation to Friday’s semifinals.

E-C led the Wildcats at the break 28-18 then locked down the Cats again in the 3rd limiting them to just 6 points as they answered with 17 for a 21 point lead. The Crusaders spread the offense around with 6 in the score book led by the 14 of London Walsh while Anthony Williams added 13. Yabi Aklog scored 7 and was their leading rebounder with 9.

Shooting was the big difference with E-C hitting 44% for the game and Mt Spokane just 29%. The Wildcats’ Tysen Lewis had 10 points and 9 boards with Jaden Ghoreishi also hitting for 10. Mt Spokane drops to 18-7 and will play in the consolation, loser out game at 10:30am on Friday against Bellevue.

Eastside Catholic advances to the semifinals and will take on red hot Lincoln in the 5:30pm game. The Crusaders are now 19-8 on the year.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Anthony Williams.

(7) Lincoln 77, (8) Bellevue 57
The Abes are another team that’s grabbing a lot of attention and they have been on a run since mid-January and they didn’t slow down in the quarterfinals. Lincoln wasted little time exploding to a 46-27 halftime lead and never looked back. The Abes added to that lead after 3 with a 17-11 quarter to go up by 63-38,

The Abes shot 48% from the floor, went 10-24 from 3-point range at a 42% clip and out rebounded the Wolverines 39-28. Lincoln had 4 players in double digits with Oshea Lamar leading with 17 along with 6 boards and 6 assists. Jalan Little had 16 while Davion Shareef-Dulanaey and Justus Holt each had 13.

Lincoln improves to 17-3 and advances to the semifinals on Friday where they will face 4th seeded Eastside Catholic.

Bellevue now 20-9, drops into the consolation bracket and will take on 3 seed Mt Spokane in a must win game at 10:30am Friday. The Wolverines got 15 from Jackson Skaggs and 13 from Nicolas Norrah.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the Abes’ Oshea Lamar.

Day 2 Quarterfinals
Winners to Semifinals, Losers to Consolation bracket

(4) Roosevelt 49, (11) Lakeside (Sea) 41
The Lakeside Lions scored 15 in the 1st quarter and 20 in the 4th. The problem was in the middle where they scored a combined 6 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Even with that offensive meltdown the Lions defense did keep them in the game as the Roughriders were consistent with scoring no more than 14 or less than 10 and by the end of the 3rd they built a 35-21 lead. So even with the their best quarter Lakeside was too far behind to make up the difference.

Roosevelt spread out their offense with 3 in double figures led by Giselle Dollar with 15 points and just missing the doubler with 9 rebounds. Emma Curtis added 12 and Sloane Sprangers had 10. Roosevelt shot 32% for the game and from behind the 3 point line going 7 for 22.

The Lions outrebounded the roughriders 46-31 but only shot 27% for the game 15 of 55 and 19% behind the arc. Lakeside’s Kaliya Woodard led with 14 points and 14 rebounds while Lili Brown scored 11. Lakeside is now 19-11 and will face a must win on Friday to get to trophy day on Saturday. The Lions will play at 12:15pm on Friday.

Roosevelt is now 23-4 and headed to the semifinals on Friday and will tip off at 7:15pm.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Roosevelt’s Giselle Dollar.

(1) Bellevue 56,  (7) Evergreen 46
The Evergreen Plainsmen gave top seed Bellevue a solid run for their money. Evergreen hasn’t been to the State tournament much in their school history in fact this is only their 4th appearance and they have never placed. Maybe the Plainsmen snuck up on the Wolverines but when challenged Bellevue was able to put it away in the final minutes.

Evergreen led all through the 1st half 16-9 after 1 and 27-26 at the half. Bellevue pulled ahead after 3 limiting the Plainsmen to 8 but they didn’t run away with leading 41-35. That was enough to keep Evergreen from pulling a stunning upset and got the Wolverines to the semifinals.

Bellevue ground out a tough win and were led by Iyla Jones’ 12 points, Syesha Simanton had 11 and Dilynn Johnson hit for 10. Nayvi Robinson just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 boards.

Evergreen’s top scorer was Kimora Ross with Amaya Paschal and Harmony Fallin each with 11. Evergreen drops to 21-6 for the season and plays in a loser out consolation game at 12:15 on Friday against 11 seed Lakeside. If the Plainsmen can win they will play in the 4th/6th place game on Saturday and either way they would take home their first trophy in school history.

Bellevue is now 25-3 and move onto the semifinals with a 7:15pm tip-off against Roosevelt.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Nayvi Robinson.

(6) Eastside Catholic 59, (12) White River 40
The Crusaders took control of this quarterfinal from the start sprinting out to a, 18-11 lead after one and stretched it to a 36-17 lead at the half. The Hornets faced a stiff E-C defense and they were cold as well.

Out of the half the Crusaders extended that lead even more with a 14-9 quarter and cruised into the semifinals. Eastside Catholic improved to 19-7 and will play in the semifinal nightcap at 9pm Friday night against 2nd seed Snohomish.

E-C was led by Raquel Dunnam’s 17 with 5 3-balls in the 1st half, Amy Nduka had 15 and 12 rebounds for the doubler and Sophie Lugolobi just missed the double with 12 and 8.

The Hornets struggled offensively the whole game with only Maggee Schmitz hitting double figures with 18. White River is now 19-7 for the season and will face 9 seed Stanwood at 2pm Friday in a loser out contest.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Raquel Dunnam.

(2) Snohomish 41, (9) Stanwood 36 (OT)
To call this a defensive slugfest is the understatement of the year. Neither team scored more than 11 points in a quarter and neither scored more than 7 in the 1st two quarters. They were tied at 6-6 after 1 and Snohomish took a 13-9 lead into halftime.

Stanwood would hit double digits first with an 11-6 3rd quarter giving the Spartans a 20-19 lead heading into the 4th quater. The Panthers would then equal that 11 point outburst and held Stanwood to 10 for a 30-30 tie after regulation. They would go 4 more minutes and the Panthers finally got their offense rolling matching that 11 points in just the 4 minutes of OT while Stanwood struggled with 6 sending the 2 seed Panthers to Friday’s semifinals.

Snohomish relied on one to score 75% of their points as Sienna Capelli hit for 30. She grabbed 10 boards had 3 assists, 3 blocked shots and 3 steals. The Panthers got their 20th win of the season and are now 20-6. They will take on 6 seed Eastside Catholic in the 9pm game Friday night.

Stanwood was led by Stella Berrett’s 13 points and 7 rebounds. The Spartan’s are now 21-6 and will play on Friday at 2pm against 12 seeded White River for a chance to play for 4th on Saturday.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was a clear choice in Sienna Capelli.

(11) Kennedy Catholic 65, (5) Gonzaga Prep 52
The 11 seed Lancers are turning some heads as they took out the 3 seed Chiawana on Wednesday and now knock off the 5th seeded Bullpups from Gonzaga Prep in the quarterfinals and did so with a convincing win.

Leading the Lancers was Jayden Fitzgerald with a massive game hitting for 32 and added 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots and 4 steals. Fitzgerald had some help from Gabriela King with a double-double 12 and 11 and Kat Schroeder added 10 points. The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Jayden Fitzgerald.

(1) Davis 76, (10) Lake Stevens 56
The Pirates led by just 1 after the 1st quarter over a motivated Lake Stevens Vikings squad, 15-14. But the Pirates were just getting warmed up and answered that 15 with 24 more in the 2nd. The Vikings kept within striking distance with 22 of their own and trailed by just 3 at the break.

The 3rd quarter is when the Pirates started to kick it in getting up and down the court putting in another 22 and this time the defense picked up holding the Vikings to 11 and stretching that lead to 14. The Vikings had to start putting up shots and take chances to close the gap in the final quarter but the Pirates would not bend and finished the job to advance to the semifinal on Friday.

Davis’s Isa Garcia led the offense with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Not far behind was the 22 from Cheyenne Hull who completed the double-double with 18 boards. She also had 7 assists and 6 steals. Kobe Johnson added 12 points and Deets Parrish had 10. Davis is now 22-2 on the season and will head to the semifinals on Friday at 3:45 facing the surprising 11 seeded Kennedy Catholic Lancers.

Lake Stevens got 21 from Noelani Tupua with 8 boards while Keira Isabelle Tupua had 19 and 9 rebounds. The 10 seed Vikings drop to 22-4 and will play a loser out consolation game at 9am on Friday against 5 seed Gonzaga Prep.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the Pirates’ Isa Garcia.

(6) Lake Washington 55, (4) Woodinville 50
A Kingco showdown in the quarterfinals went to the Kangaroos of Lake Washington in this thrilling down to the wire match-up. It wouldn’t be a 4A Girls State Championship without the Falcons of Woodinville who feel like they have an automatic pass to the Tacoma Dome. This is their 9th straight tournament appearance and shooting for their 7th trophy in the last 9 years and were hoping for that 2nd State Title.

L-W is making their 7th straight trip to the Dome and out of the last 6 years they have three 2nd place finishes. Both teams looking to get the big Gold Ball trophy.

They played like a State final as both teams know each other very well. The Falcons led after 1 quarter 14-13 and the Kangs answered with a 14-8 2nd quarter to lead 27-22 at the half.

Lake Washington maintained that lead, in fact added 1 for a 6 point lead after 3. But the Falcons were not interested in throwing in the towel and with less than a minute to play the lead was down to 2 points. Kamryn Wille had a chance to tie but couldn’t convert a close in shot that rolled off the rim. After a free throw by the L-W, Woodinville had a chance with a 3 pointer with less than 10 seconds to play but missed. A couple of clinching two possession free throws and the Kangs clinched the quarterfinal win and headed back  to the semifinals.

The Kangaroos were led by Julia Benthin with 21 and 10 rebounds for the double-up and 4 steals to fill out the stat line. Ashley Uusitalo had 16 and Ileana Olteamu with 11. Lake Washington is now 20-7 and they will play on Friday against (8) Sumner winner at 5:30pm.

Woodinville drops 25-5 and Jazlyn Wilkerson led with 21 also picked up 10 rebounds, Sammy Harris had 15 and Tanuja Jutta finished with 10. The Falcons will play in the consolation loser out game Friday at 10:30am against 2 seed Union.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Lake Washington’s Julia Benthin.

(8) Sumner 58, (2) Union 53
It’s not often teams would clamor to be the 8 seed, it does get you in the top 8 but a tough seed. Just maybe the Sumner Spartans are going to start requesting for the 8 seed even if they were to get a higher position. Last year they were the 8 and ended up playing for the State Championship.

They aren’t there yet but they are now 1 game away from heading back to the big game on Saturday after holding off the 2 seeded Union Titans in a brilliant performance by both teams.

Sumner took the lead in the 1st half with a 14 and 17 point quarters holding the Titans to 10 and 16 and were up 31-26. Union was at a tipping point and which way would they go? Well they dug in and ground away to make it a 2 point game after 3 quarters. With plenty of momentum the Titans would actually take a 2 point lead in the 4th quarter as they battled back and forth. Sumner would take control late forcing the Titans to foul and put it away at the free throw line.

Sumner is now 26-4 and headed to the semifinals on Friday where they’ll face 6 seed Lake Washington for a chance to get back to the Championship gamer. The Spartans were led by the 27 points and 9 rebounds of Kawehi Borden. Raymiah Jackson checked in with 12 and 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Union drops to 25-3 and into the consolation bracket for a must win game on Friday at 10:30am against 4 seed Woodinville. The Titans were led with a massive game from Brooklynn Haywood with 32 points. Myla Larry had 9 and led in rebounds with 7.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP was Kawehi Borden for Sumner.

Day 2 Quarterfinals
Winners to Semifinals, Losers to Consolation bracket

(5) Gonzaga Prep 48, (6) Puyallup 47 (2OT)
A re-match of last year’s Championship came down to a couple of possessions at the end of the 2nd overtime. Down by one with less than 40 seconds to play Quamari Costello drove the lane and was fouled as he attempted a shot and went to the line. Costello who led a huge comeback in the 4th quarter scoring 10 of his 18 points to help push it to OT. He made both shots to give the Vikings a 1 point lead.

With just seconds to go Gonzaga Prep had possession and brought the ball up the floor and it ended up in the hands Dylynn Groves who drove the into the paint from the right side got by one defender laid it up and it fell through leaving 1.8 seconds left for the Vikings. Costello would get a half court shot off but no “Do you believe in Miracles” ending for Puyallup. The Bullpups exploded in celebration much like they did about a year ago when their last second shot against Puyallup gave them the State Championship.

The Bullpups were led by Groves with 19. Ryan Carney added 14 with 5 boards and Jack Pierce chipped in with 13 and completed the double-double 10 rebounds. Speaking of rebounds, Jackson Mott was the Chairman of the Board with 17. Gonzaga Prep is now 19-6 and advances to the semifinals and will have the surprising 7 seeded Emerald Ridge Jaguars in the 7:15pm game.

Puyallup got 18 points from both Costello and Will Nasinec. The Vikings will have to try to shake off the disappointing loss and bounce back to play in a loser out consolation game on Friday at 12:15pm where they will take on the top seed Mt Si who was stunned by 7 seed Emerald Ridge in the quarters.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the game winner Dylynn Groves for Gonzaga Prep.

(7) Emerald Ridge 67, (1) Mt Si 62
The Emerald Ridge Jaguars went over to Richland last weekend in the Regional round and the Bombers handed E-R a 79-56 loss. This pushed the Jags into the opening day round of 12 on Wednesday and they took care of business with a nice bounce back win over Redmond 63-47.

The Jags then stunned the Tacoma Dome crowd in the quarterfinals knocking off top seeded Mt Si. E-R won the first 3 quarters 16-15, 20-16 and 20-18 to build a 7 point lead heading into the 4th quarter. The Jaguars pressure defense did not fold and although the Wildcats outscored them in the 4th it was only 13-11 and Emerald Ridge is in the semifinals.

The Jags were had 3 in double figures with a well balanced offensive attack and 7 players scoring. The top scorer was Ellis Mosley with 19, Jordan Bennett added 15 and Mychal Turner hit for 13. Jamaize McGriff had 9 points and led in rebounding with 9. Emerald Ridge is now 25-4 and will take on the 5 seed and defending Champs Gonzaga Prep at 7:30p Friday night. If the Jags can pull off the win and Richland wins their semifinal they will get a shot at redemption for that regional loss last weekend.

Mt Si wondering how they let this one get away from them will have to rebound quickly as they drop into a loser out consolation game on Friday. Latt Ford led the Wildcats with 23 and 11 boards, Marcus Heide also with the double-double of 11 and 11 while Brady Hennig finished with 11 as well. The Wildcats play Friday at 12:15pm against 6 seed Puyallup.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Ellis Mosley of Emerald Ridge.

(3) Lake Washington 49, (4) Glacier Peak 46
This was a classic battle of two very well matched teams with great defenses stands and limited yet effective offense as this game played out. Both teams had a quarter in single digits but neither scored less than 8 or more than 16 in a quarter. Lake Washington gained the first advantage with a 23-19 lead at the half. They added one more after 3 quarters up 35-30.

Glacier Peak then made a run and had their chances but the Kangaroos were able to stave off the Grizzlies and earn a huge win to get to the quarterfinals. L-W had a few slight advantages in this one, out rebounding the Grizzlies 32-28, the Kangs shot 40% from the floor and were 7 for 23 behind the 3 point line at 30% and 57% from the line.

Glacier Peak shot 38% from the floor, 4 of 19 from 3 point land at 21% and 50% from the line. Just winning one of those could have made up the 3 point deficit which shows just how close this match-up was in the end.

Glacier Peak got 20 from Reed Nagel with 7 assists, Zachary Albright added 12 with 6 boards. The Grizzlies drop to 22-2 and will play on Friday in the consolation round at 2p in a loser out game with West Valley of Yakima.

The Kangs had 3 with 10 or more points topped by Jayden Hunt with 16. Omer Ziklik had 13 and Mateo Cummings had 10 with 6 rebounds. Lake Washington improves to 23-4 and will play in the Friday night 9pm semifinal against the 2 seeded Richland Bombers.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Omer Ziklik for Lake Washington.

(2) Richland 76, (8) West Valley (Yak) 62
After a bit of a slow start for the Bombers as they trailed the West Valley Rams of Yakima after the 1st quarter 16-13. When the 2nd quarter began the Bombers found their rhythm dropping 19 and holding the Rams to 10 for a 32-26 lead at the break.

Richland kept up the offensive pressure but the Rams refused to give in on a 24-23 3rd quarter. Richland would then pull away with another 20 point quarter 20-13 to pull away and march into the Friday night semifinals.

The Bombers now 25-0, were led in scoring by Landen Northrop with 33 and picked off 7 rebounds. Lance Hornvedt had a big night with 20 points and 6 boards and 3 assists with Jackson Woodard kicking in 10 points. Richland will take on the 3 seed Lake Washington Friday in the Semifinal nightcap at 9pm.

West Valley had 4 in double digits with 19 for Austin Birley with 8 rebounds, Jrayden Whitfielkd had 13, Parker Mills got the double-double with 11 points and 10 boards and Parker Hill had 10. The Rams are now 20-3 and will play in a consolation loser out game on Friday at 2pm against 4 seed Glacier Peak.

Trailing 25-23 at the half the Warriors key quarter was the 3rd where their defense limited the Falcons to just 7. Prairie didn’t let EW get-away as they held them to 12. That 5 point difference gave them a 3 point lead ands that would be the difference in playing at least two more days and having your season come to an end. The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to the Warrior’s Dennis Karl.

(2) O’Dea 62, (10) Shorewood 52
The O’Dea Irish still stinging from that regional loss didn’t allow any carryover and got the job dome on opening day in the Tacoma Dome in a must win game. The Irish led by 4 after the 1st quarter and pushed it to a 7 point cushion at the half. The Stormrays never let O’Dea to push their advantage to a huge lead and they were outscored by 2 in the 3rd and just 1 in the final quarter.

(4) Eastside Catholic 79, (12) Liberty (Renton) 70
After an explosive 1st quarter offensively things cooled off in the 2nd quarter especially for the Librty Patriots. The Pats actually led after the 1st quarter 24-22. Eastside Catholic slipped to 16 in the 2nd but a cold streak and stiff defense from the Crusaders held Liberty to just 7 and a 38-31 lead for E-C.

The Crusaders added another 7 to that lead after 3 which was needed as the Patriots never gave in as their offense re-ignited dropping 25. E-C responded with 20 of their own to keep the Patriots at bay.

Eastside Catholic’s Yabi Aklog drop a tournament high so far of 32. No 3’s and 8 of 9 from the line. He doubled it up with 13 rebounds, had 2 assists, 2 blocked shots and a steal. Anthony Williams had 15 points and 8 boards and Steven Sun added 13.

The 1st half was interesting with each team taking their turn to have a big quarter. The Wolverines jumped out to a 23-14 lead after the 1st quarter. The Lions answered the bell with a 25 -16 advantage in the 2nd and with the quick math, they were all even at 39 at the break.

As the 2nd half began it was Bellevue again with the advantage 22-17 and took a 5 point lead into the 4th and final. Would Auburn Mountainview be able to answer again? (4) Glacier Peak 57, (13) Woodinville 38
Steady and strong was how the Grizzlies took care of the Falcons. Never scoring more than 17 or less than 11 in each quarter Glacier Peak rolls into Thursday’s quarterfinals bouncing back from a heartbreaking regional loss.

For Glacier Peak, Paulos Mulugeta had a great night with 20 points, Zachary Albright just missed a double-double with 17 and 9 and Reed Nagel had double digits with 11 points and 8 boards.

The Grizzlies are now 22-1 and will play Thursday at 7:15pm against 3 seed Lake Washington with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

(8) West Valley 71, (9) Auburn 67
The West Valley Rams came out with a well balanced offense with 4 players scoring in double digits. The Trojans tried to shut down one or two and then the others would chip in and the Rams kept the Trojans just far enough way to clinch the win and earn a shot in the Thursday quarterfinal.

With 22 points and 10 points Austin Birley led the Ram attack and golt plenty of support from Parker Mills with 16 and 10 for his own double-double, Parker Hill just missed a double-up with 14 points and 8 assists and with 13 was Jett Bremerman.

The Rams are now 20-2 and will get the 9pm game again on Thursday facing 2 seed Richland.

Auburn fell just short as they battled hard in trying to come back on the Rams. The Trojans also had 4 in twin figures with Miles Henry scoring 19, Matthew Fredrickson had 15 while Daniel Johnson and Isaiah Englund each with 12. Auburn finished the year at 21-4.
