(Yakima, WA) The State 2A and 1A boys and girls basketball tournaments wrapped up on Saturday night. Our crews have taken time to break down each tournament and came up with our All-Tournament teams for each classifications. We divided it by location and in this is the Yakima SunDome edition. The 4A/3A are in the Tacoma Dome post and the 2B/1B’s are in the Spokane Arena post.
The one rule we had was you had to have played in 3 games to be eligible. It could be quarterfinals to trophy day or could be Wednesday through Friday or Saturday.
Decisions were based on stats, personal observation and key moments. We awarded 1 MVP, 5 1st team and 5 2nd team spots only. There are always tough decisions to make but yest we didn’t want to waterdown the awards. This is meant to 100% celebrate great performances and bring a spotlight to 11 players in each classification. This is not meant to say others weren’t worthy, there were many hard choices and our crews did not agree on all picks.
We added some additional awards as well that bring so much fun to these tournaments and really set a great tone. Names, other than the MVP are listed in no particular order, you were either 1st team or 2nd team. Let’s get to our Winners!
We’re going to begin with our “Venue Winners” first then the All-Tournament teams.
Band of the Yakima SunDome
Lynden Band; Loud…VERY LOUD. There is a fine line between loud and too loud and Lynden knows the perfect balance. Electric and always bringing the energy, the Lions band is always top tier.
Cheer Staff of the Yakima SunDome
Lynden Christian Cheer Squad: This might feel like a cop out, but it was one specific instance that pushed the Lyncs to the top. The dads of the cheerleaders came out for a performance during a timeout. That catapulted them to the top.
Fan Base of the Yakima SunDome
Zillah: Being in two championship games, you knew the Leopard faithful would pack the SunDome. However, they packed it for all 6 games Zillah was in during the week. The Leopard student section is top notch with quick and creative chants and even boys head coach Mario Mengarelli made an appearance front row in the student section to watch the girls win their first state title ever.
