Berkly Catton scored the shootout winner while scoring in regulation off a fortuitous bounce as the Seattle Kraken rallied from a two goal deficit to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in a shootout. The win for Seattle snapped their six game losing streak. Seattle got goals from eventual shootout winner Berkly Catton, Jared McCann, and Bobby McMann while Joey Daccord made 31 saves on 34 Golden Knight shots. Vegas had their scoring come from Mark Stone twice and Brett Howden with Adin Hill saving 30 of 33 Seattle shots.
Seattle’s win keeps them mathematically alive in the playoff race with four games left in their regular season.
The game came a day after the team announced Team President Ron Francis mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the season.
Joey Daccord made a big save 30 seconds into the game on a breakaway from Vegas’s Mark Stone. Vegas went on to hit three posts in the opening period.
Mark Stone got his payback from the early Daccord save when the Vegas captain broke the ice by scoring his first goal in sixteen games at 10:04 of the opening period. Seattle went on to outshoot Vegas 10-9 in the first 20 minutes.
It did not take long for Vegas to strike in the second period. Mark Stone scored his second goal of the game on the power play after Joey Daccord made a right pad save 55 seconds in. Late in the second, Jared McCann notched a power play goal on a one timer off a feed from Vince Dunn at 17:54 to put the Kraken within one at 2-1. Vegas led in shots in the second period 14-11.
1:11 into the third, Brett Howden gave Vegas insurance finishing a loose rebound along the left post, to give the Golden Knights a 3-1 lead. Seattle was not done. A bounce off of an Adam Larsson dump-in came where Berkly Catton buried the puck into a wide open the net at 6:11 of the third put the Kraken right back in the game at 3-2. Bobby McMann tied the game when Jordan Eberle won a puck battle along the right corner wall, finding McMann who scorched a shot by Hill to tie the game at carried the rally for Seattle level when he roofed a shot by Adin Hill at 9:16 off a pass from the right corner from Jordan Eberle. McMann’s goal came at 9:16. Seattle outshot Vegas 10-8 in the third period, but overtime was needed to decide a winner.
Vegas held the edge in shots 3-2 in overtime, but with no scoring in the extra five minutes, a shootout was necessary to decide a winner. In the shootout, Vegas’s Mitch Marner opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first round, then Matty Beniers promptly responded in the top half of the second. After the next four shooters missed their tries, it was up to Berkly Catton in the fifth round who took center stage. Catton went went stick side on Hill for the lead in the shootout. Pavel Dorofeyev was stopped by Joey Daccord to hand Seattle the come from behind win.
Lane Lambert after a tough string of losses said, “It’s nice to put in the effort and get rewarded with a win for sure.”
Seattle’s final homestand of the season continues on Saturday against the Calgary Flames before closing against the Los Angeles Kings.
