In a shocking twist of events, rumors of LIV Golf shutting down have rocked the golf world. The league that caused a fracture in men’s professional golf when it launched in 2022 has certainly brought headlines, controversy, and boatloads of money into the game. Ryan French of Monday Q Info was the first to publish news of a “bombshell announcement on LIVs future is imminent” on Tuesday evening. French was then hosted on an X Space run by X user, “Tweeth Mitchell” as part of “The Takesmen” and explained that there was confusion amongst agents and one player on whether LIV Mexico City would tee off this weekend. LIV Mexico City is scheduled to start tomorrow and conclude on Sunday.
The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) released information on the next five years and their plan to focus on the domestic economy in Saudi Arabia. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of the PIF, said on Wednesday, “Local investment should be 80%, and we aim for international investment to be 20%.” The PIF has invested over $5 billion into LIV Golf and is the main source of funding for the league. LIV Golf has annually lost money in its brief time, and according to Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard, “vendors and players haven’t been paid “for the last few weeks.”
Adding further confusion to the future of the league, on the LIV Golf Media Hub, there haven’t been any pre-tournament notes posted. Typically, by Wednesday morning, there are pre-tournament notes posted with an email sent to media members directly linking the pre-tournament notes, media hub, and other information, such as transcripts and photographs. There have been press conferences held at LIV Mexico City, with those transcripts being updated on the LIV Golf Media Hub.
This is an incredibly fluid story with not much information being shared throughout the golf world. At The Masters, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil was saying that LIV Golf was funded into the next decade, perhaps shedding light on how even the CEO could be blindsided by the potential sudden shutdown of LIV Golf.
It’s been a whirlwind of chaos in men’s professional golf this decade, and perhaps another dramatic plot twist is in store.
