(Seattle, WA) The Sounders journey through the Concacaf Champions Cup came to an end despite their 3-1 win over Tigres. The Sounders won it all in 2022 but roster changes and injuries have kept Seattle from hoisting the cup a 2nd time.

The Sounders jumped out to an early lead on an Albert Rusnak goal in the 11th minute. The goal was initially called offside but after a VAR review the call was overturned for the 1-0 lead. Seattle took advantage of the weather and handled most of the possession in the first half. Tigres got an equalizer goal in the 31st on a corner kick taken by Juan Brunetta. Joaquim Henrique came flying into the middle of the box and headed the ball home for the 1-1 first half tie. A late flurry of shots from Seattle came up short and the teams went into the half knotted at 1-1.

Danny Musovski got inserted into the lineup for Seattle to start the second half. Just 4 minutes into the half Jordan Morris found Musovski on a pretty through ball for the 2-1 Sounders lead. A pair of excellent saves by Stefan Frei in the 61st and 66th helped Seattle maintain the lead.  Albert Rusnak hit a rocket from just outside the box for the 3-1 lead in the 82nd minute. Both teams made several subs to finish the game. Those subs upped the tempo and both teams fired off shots late but when the final whistle blew Seattle was eliminated from Champions Cup play with a 3-1 win. Although the aggregate for the matches was 3-3 the goal scored by Tigres in Seattle was the tie breaker and sent them to the semis against Nashville. Seattle resumes MLS play on Saturday April 18th against St. Louis.

Los Auriazules came out of the gates hot, firing a shot on frame less than a minute into the match. The Sounders were able to settle things down and played a consistent first half. Just before halftime Nouhou got called for a take down in the box and Tigres had a chance to take the lead. Angel Correa stepped up and sailed the penalty shot over the cross bar for the 0-0 halftime score.

Tigres kept up the pressure and it paid off in the 51st minute on a goal by Ozziel Herrera. It looked like the Sounders were going to get the answer in the 63rd on a close range shot by Paul Rothrock but a spectacular save by Nahuel Guzmán shut them down. The final goal of the match came on an own goal by Jackson Ragen in the 76th minute for a 2-0 Sounders deficit going into the second leg. The Sounders have to find a way to slow down Tigres who took 22 shots to Seattle’s 4. Los Auriazules controlled the match 57% of the possession.

Round of 16 Seattle Advances Over Vancouver

Seattle won the first leg 3-0 in Vancouver. Paul Arriola scored in the 45th and 58th minutes for the Sounders. Paul Rothrock got the games last goal in the 70th.

Seattle won the second leg 2-1 in Seattle. Jeevan Badwal put the Whitecaps on the board first in the 24th minute. Danny Musovski notched the equalizer in the 79th with Paul Rothrock hit the game winner in the 83rd for Seattle to advance to quarterfinals against Tigres.
