The Eli Sports Network (ESN) began a tradition 5 years ago where at the end of the year we crown the “Champion of Champions”. This is a combined boys and girls overall sports Champion or the ultimate State Champion. We also crown a boys Champion and girls overall Champion. To do this we created a scoring system that rewards consistency over a single sport Championship. It’s great to be the State Basketball Champs for both girls and boys but how did your school’s cross country team or golf team or swim team do is what we wanted to know.
This system gives equal reward for State Titles whether it’s a Football Championship with 5,000 people in attendance to Slow-pitch with a few hundred to Golf where a few family members or friends come to watch. It’s not about popularity, it’s about results.
Some of the classification’s have an advantage over others when it comes to comparing classifications against others for example the B’s do not have Girls Bowling or boys Swimming so they cannot earn points in those sports. This is why our first focus is the individual classification of Champions for each boys and girls team. So we will have a Champion for 4A boys and 4A girls all the way down to 1B.
In the case of split schools coming together to play just a couple of sports then each get half of the points awarded. Those schools that play all their sports together and are known as a combined program get all the points and are identified as that entity. For instance, Raymond-South Bend high schools have been together as a single sports program for many years now and they are credited as a combined program. While Overlake and Bear Creek only combine for one sport so they split their placing points between the two schools.
Finally, and this is where the larger schools do have an advantage with more sports to participate, the All Classification Combined Champion. This is how we scored each and every tournament. For tournaments that clearly had 8 places each place got the points assigned below to that placing. When there are multiple teams tied for one place such as all the quarterfinal losers in football all get 5th place which is a total of 4 teams. We add up the tied points 5th thru 8th which totals 20 points and divide them equally so each quarter final loser or 5th place gets 5 points.

Mercer Island is the first back to back Champion of Champions and the only multi time winner. The Islanders Boys won titles in Cross Country and Soccer and also finished 4th in both Swimming and Diving as well as Tennis. The Lady Islanders added 4 Championship Trophies to the case with titles in Cross Country, Swimming & Diving, Track & Field and Tennis. All that combined earns Mercer Island their 3rd Champion of Champions banner.
Bainbridge challenged for the top spot but came up 3 points short. The Girl’s only title came in Swimming & Diving but they placed in 6 other sports. The Boys dominated the 2A ranks winning 5 out of 10 State titles. The Spartan Boys won Cross Country, Swimming & Diving, Soccer, Baseball and Golf. Bainbridge finished 3rd last year in the final Champion of Champions standings; this year they moved up one spot on the podium.
Bellevue and Columbia River tied for 3rd in the final standings. The Wolverines Girls won titles in Soccer and Golf and finished in the top 4 in four other sports. Bellevue Boys only title came in Swimming & Diving. Columbia River finished 3rd in the final standing without winning a State title. The Rapids Boys and Girls placed in 15 sports combined with 4 seconds, 3 thirds, and 2 fourths.
Freeman rounds out the top 5 after finishing 2nd overall last season. The Scotties Girls took home 2 titles in Fastpitch and Golf and 2 seconds in Volleyball and Soccer. The Boys won Cross Country and Track and Field titles.

Bellevue got State Titles in Girls Soccer and Boys Swimming and Diving. The Lady Wolverines also took home 2nd in Basketball and 3rd in Swimming and Diving and 4th in Volleyball. The Boys tied for 3rd in Football and also tied for 7th in Basketball to help get the Wolverines to the top of the standings.
There is a tie for 2nd overall between Bainbridge and Columbia River both in the 2A classification. Bainbridge had basically a 50-50 split in boys and girls thru the winter championships with the boys having a slight edge in points. The Spartans swept the boys and girls Swimming and Diving Championships and the boys also got a Cross County Title.
Columbia River Girls did the heavy lifting to get the Rapids to the top of the standings. CR girls took 2nd in both Soccer and Bowling and 3rd in both Swimming and Diving and Volleyball. The boys placed in both Cross Country and Basketball but the Rapids Boys usually have pretty strong spring sports.
