(Tenino, WA) Aggressive defense and forcing turnovers is the formula that the Tenino Beavers use to shutdown their opponents and stack up the wins. The Montesano Bulldogs gave Tenino a taste of their own medicine on Saturday as the Bulldogs handed the Beavers their first league loss.

Both teams got off to a slow start on offense in the opening quarter. In what was a big game, both teams had some nerves and struggled getting in a groove. Finally, Montesano found their rhythm but Tenino hung around and at the end of the 1st quarter Montesano led 15-9.

Then came some foul trouble for the Beavers. Leading scorer Ashley Schow picked up her third foul early in the 2nd quarter and had to sit for the remainder of the half. Alivia Hunter then followed with her third foul and Abby Severse had some as well. Montesano also had foul trouble with Paige Lisherness and Mikayla Stanfield out with first half fouls as well. Junior McKynnlie Dalan was never in foul trouble and started taking over leading Montesano to a 30-15 halftime lead.

The Beavers had their best quarter in the 3rd when Severse started knocking down shots and attacking the paint. They put up 11 points in the quarter but still had no answer to Dalan after Ashley Schow picked up her 4th foul. Dalan put up 10 points in the 3rd quarter and finished with 32 points and 18 rebounds.

Montesano would wrap up the 58-34 victory and remain the only undefeated team in league play in the Evergreen 1A conference. The height and aggressiveness of the Bulldog defense showed exactly why they are the #2 team in 1A

Montesano moves to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. They will hos Hoquiam on Wednesday. Tenino drops to 12-4 and 3-1 in league play as they look to bounce back Monday at Eatonville. The MVPs of the game were McKynnlie Dalan for Montesano and Abby Severse for Tenino.
