Saturday, March 8 CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY!

State Championship Game

(1) Lynden 54, (2) Ellensburg 37

By Sandy Ringer

Too much size. Too much depth.

Lynden was simply too much for Ellensburg in the championship game of the Class 2A state girls basketball tournament.

The Lions (28-0) prevailed in a battle of unbeatens Saturday at the Yakima SunDome to defend their title, 54-37. They also beat Ellensburg in last year’s final, which ended the Bulldogs’ 75-game win streak and shot at a three-peat.

Ellensburg coach Tim Ravet simply credited his talented opponent.

“There are about a million was to skin a Lion and none of them worked,” he said with a smile.

Sophomore Finley Percher put together another solid game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, two assists and two steals as she proved worthy of the tournament MVP honor she received.

But all she wanted to talk about afterward were her teammates.

“It really shows how hard we’ve worked this season,” she said. “It feels great…Every single player has worked so hard, one through 12.”

Parcher popped in seven of the Lions’ 15 first-quarter points. Payton Mills beat the buzzer with a jumper in the key that banked in.

That took some of the luster off Bella Standish’s three-point bucket 12 seconds earlier that had cut Lynden’s advantage to 13-10.

Neither team was able to get into much of an offensive flow in the first half, in part because the game was tightly officiated from the get-go. In the first 16 minutes, 17 fouls were called.

Also in part to some shaky shooting.

Ellensburg (27-1) scored just four points in the second period, all by Standish. Standish, in fact, accounted for 10 of the Bulldogs’ 14 first-half points and finished with 15.

Lexi Hermanutz connected on a triple with 51 seconds to go that gave Lynden a 24-14 lead.

Both teams heated up in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs never recovered from that frigid start and were held to a season low in scoring (by 17 points).

Lynden was in front 41-26 before Jamison Philip completed a three-point play and it was 41-29 going into the fourth.

The Bulldogs’ offense dried up again as they went scoreless for more than eight minutes while Lynden extended its lead to 47-29.

Philip, a senior guard, worked hard for her 15 points and fouled out with less than a half-minute to go. She was also voted to the all-tournament first team, while Standish made the second squad.

Lynden junior Payton Mills, a second-team choice, logged 12 points and 14 rebounds. Hermanutz, a sophomore, finished with 10. But the game MVP went to senior Kiki York, who scored nine points and was a defensive menace.

Ellensburg clearly missed 5-11 senior Layne Rogel, who had led the team in scoring for the second half of the season, as she was out all week with an illness.

The Bulldogs are 102-2 over the past four seasons with both losses coming to Lynden.

Consolation Games

9:30am  4th/6th Place Game
(5) Archbishop Murphy 62, (4) WF West 50

Ava Marr is a difference-maker.

The senior guard scored 15 of her 26 points in the third period as the Wildcats overcame a sluggish start to end the season on a savory note.

After lagging 24-22 at the break, Archbishop Murphy stepped on the gas with a 28-9 spurt in the third.

Sophomore Celine Wright (12 points) and junior Brooke Blachly (11) were key as well as the Wildcats (25-3) improved on last year’s sixth-place showing.

Marr, the game MVP, connected on four of eight three-point tries and Archbishop Murphy made 10 of 24 as a team.

Julia Dalan did her part to keep the Bearcats in it with 23 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks. The dynamic senior leaves with a tournament-record 24 blocks in four games, including 13 on Friday that set an individual tourney mark.

Dalan’s buzzer-beater gave W.F. West the halftime advantage. Kaitlyn Chloupek added 12 points and Dilyn Boeck just missed another double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Both are just sophomores.

The Bearcats (25-4) collected their second trophy in four years. They were fifth in 2022.

1pm  3rd/5th Place Game
(3) Deer Park 52, (6) Prosser 50

Looking for clutch free throws?

Ashlan Bryant’s got you covered.

The sophomore had ice in her veins to hit the deciding two free throws after drawing a foul just before time expired. That gave her a game-best 20 points and the nod at MVP. She added seven rebounds.

Deer Park (26-1), the runner-up in Class 1A just a year ago, zetted to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter and was on top 25-12 at the half. The Stags forced 10 early turnovers and held star Herbie Wright to just four points.

But Wright got untracked to power Prosser’s comeback, finishing with 18 points. She notched another fine all-around game with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Lay’lee Dixon and Deidra Phillips chipped in a dozen each for the Mustangs (23-7), who were also fifth in last year’s tournament. It’s their fourth consecutive top-five finish.

Deer Park wound up with three players in double figures. Brooklyn Coe dropped in 13, while Jacey Boesel added 12 and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Consoltion Round (Loser Out)
(5) Archbishop Murphy 65, (7) Columbia River 35

Junior Brooke Blachly showed up ready to play, scoring 10 of her game-best 21 points in the opening quarter.

She had 16 by halftime, including all four of her three-pointers, and stood out as the MVP.

The Wildcats (24-3) are back in familiar territory as they land in Saturday’s trophy round. They square off with No. 4 W.F. West (25-3) at 9:30 a.m. with fourth and sixth places on the line. Archbishop Murphy took sixth last season and fourth in 2022.

Sophomore Celine Wright helped the ATM cause with nine points, despite playing the second half with four fouls.

Columbia River (21-6) was down 20-10 after one quarter and trailed by as many as 28 in the second. The River Rapids, who were hoping for their first trophy since 1992, got most of their scoring from junior Gracie Glavin with 15.

(4) WF West 59, (8) Bainbridge 28

Julia Dalan threw her own block party to highlight the Bearcats’ defensive dominance.

Dalan, a 6-2 senior headed to the University of Portland, recorded 13 blocks which not only set a new individual 2A tournament record, but also a tournament team record. The previous individual mark was nine, set by Tiana Parker of W.F. West back in 2015. Pullman had 11 as a team in 2010.

Dalan now has a record 19 in three tournament games and can add to that in Saturday’s trophy game against No. 5 Archbishop Murphy (24-3), which determines fourth and sixth places. Tip is set for 9:30 a.m.

Dalan wound up with a triple-double against Bainbridge, adding 16 points and 13 rebounds, making her the easy MVP.

Nine of Dalan’s blocks came in the lopsided first half, when the Bearcats blew out to a 35-9 lead. Dilyn Boeck had 16 of her 21 points by then.

Bainbridge (20-8), which was looking for its first trophy since 2008, got 10 points and 10 rebounds from senior Malia Greiwe.

Semifinals (Winner to Championship, Loser to 3rd place game)
(1) Lynden 62, (6) Prosser 44

Another day, another dominant victory for the machine-like Lions.

Lynden (27-0) ran its win streak to 47 to earn the right to defend its title against No. 2 Ellensburg (27), a rematch of last year’s final.

Junior Payton Mills made eight of nine shots from the field enroute to her game-high 18 points and added 11 rebounds for good measure. Sophomore Finley Parcher added 17 points and eight boards.

But it was junior guard Degitu Bowler who stole the MVP honor. She came off the bench to score all 11 of her points in the second half. Her personal 8-0 run ended the third quarter and including a big three-pointer that quashed any comeback delusions the Mustangs might have had. Bowler buried three of four triples.

Prosser (23-6) shot just 27.1 percent, compared to Lynden’s 52.3. Sophomore Keelyn Cox did her part, coming off the bench to bury four of six threes for 12 points. Junior Deidra Phillips was four of eight from three-point land as she tallied 15 points.

The Mustangs fared well from distance (10 of 27), but otherwise made just three of 21 tries.

Sophomore Herbie Wright added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Prosser came up short in the semis for the fourth consecutive season. The Mustangs lost to Ellensburg last year and wound up fifth. They have a chance to better that Saturday against No. 3 Deer Park (25-1) in the consolation game set for 1 p.m. The winner gets the third-place hardware and the loser takes fifth.

2) Ellensburg 58,  (3) Deer Park 50

Jamison Philip showed her poise to push the Bulldogs to victory in a battle of unbeatens.

The senior point guard sank nine of 10 free throws in the final 3:33 as Ellensburg (27-0) held off the stubborn Stags to return to the championship game. There, they get a rematch with No. 1 Lynden (27-0), which ended their 75-game win streak and hopes of a three-peat a year ago. Saturday’s tip is set for 7 p.m.

Philip piled up 25 points, five rebounds and six assists to earn MVP honors. She had a tournament-record 13 assists in Thursday’s quarterfinal win over Bainbridge.

Deer Park (25-1) didn’t go quietly. In fact, the Stags led 43-42 early in the fourth on a basket by Jacey Boesel.

Ellensburg responded with a 5-0 spurt and was up 49-44 before Berlyn Zimmerer dropped in a three with 1:49 to go – her only points of the game.

Then it was Philip time with a stead parade to the stripe.

Ellie Markus helped the Bulldogs’ cause with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Bella Standish provided 16 points.

Ellensburg played without Layne Rogal, a key senior who has had to miss the tournament due to an illness.

Deer Park, which placed second in last year’s 1A tournament, goes for the third-place trophy Saturday at 1 p.m. against No. 6 Prosser (23-6). The loser gets fifth place.

Thursday, March 6 (Winner to Semifinals, Loser to Consolation)

(6) Prosser 68, (5) Archbishop Murphy 49

Herbie Wright rainbowed in four three-pointers in the first half as the Mustangs raced to a 37-26 lead and never let up.

They are back in the semifinals for the third time in four years and hope to get over the hump this time – although it will take a bigger upset to accomplish that goal as they face No. 1 Lynden (26-0), the defending champ. That one tips at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Wright, a 5-10 sophomore, wound up with five triples and 26 points, plus five steals, making the MVP decision easy. But she got scoring help from Deidra Phillips (13) and Lay’lee Dixon (12).

The Wildcats were held to their second lowest total of the season (they had just 36 in a playoff loss to Lynden), thanks in part to 27 turnovers. Celine Wright led the scoring with 15, followed by Ashley Fletcher (11).

Archbishop Murphy (23-3) will look to bounce back in a loser-out showdown with No. 7 Columbia River (21-5) Friday at 12:15 p.m.

(1) Lynden 59,  (7) Columbia River 20

Can the Lions be tamed?

No one has come close this season.

The River Rapids became the latest landslide victim. Lynden (26-0) has won every game this season by 16 points or more (many of them much more) and now has a 46-game win streak that dates back to December of 2023 and includes last year’s state championship.

No. 6 Prosser (23-5) will be the next to try as the two square off in Friday’s 7:15 semifinal.

Finley Parcher, a 6-foot sophomore, sizzled early with 16 of her game-high 22 points coming in the first half. She missed only four shots and three of those were from behind the arc. Her MVP line included five rebounds and eight steals.

Junior Payton Mills added 15 points and six caroms.

Columbia River (21-5) was held to a season-low in scoring – thanks in part to 32 turnovers – and has now lost three of its past four games. Peyton Dukes had seven of the 20. The River Rapids must beat No. 5 Archbishop Murphy Friday at 12:15 p.m. to earn a trophy.

(3) Deer Park 56, (4) WF West 45

Brooklyn Coe had the hot hand in the first half and Jacey Boesel got cooking in the second as the Stags stayed in the title hunt.

Deer Park (27-0), last year’s runner-up in 1A, faces No. 2 Ellensburg (26-0) in a battle of unbeatens Friday at 9 p.m. The Bulldogs fell a game short of the 2A title a year ago after winning back-to-back in 2022 and ’23.

Coe, a 5-6 senior, scored 15 of her 18 points in the opening half as Deer Park edged to a 26-20 lead. Then Boesel, a 5-8 junior, went off for 15 of her 20 points. She added 16 rebounds (10 in the first half) and was tabbed game MVP.

Sophomore Ashlan Bryant contributed 11 points.

W.F. West (24-3) used a 7-0 run to trim a 16-point deficit to nine with just over a minute to go, 51-42, but Deer Park polished off the win at the line.

Sophomore Dily Boeck topped the Bearcats’ scoring with 20 points, while senior Julia Dalan supplied 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

W.F. West takes on No. 8 Bainbridge (20-7) in a loser-out game Friday at 2 p.m.

(2) Ellensburg 63, (8) Bainbridge 37

The Bulldogs (26-0) blanked Bainbridge for the final 5:05 of the first half to build a 33-17 cushion and coasted into the semifinals from there.

Ellensburg hasn’t lost since last year’s 2A finale against Lynden, which ended a 75-game win streak and hopes of a third consecutive crown. No. 3 Deer Park (25-0), second in 1A a season ago, presents an interesting challenge in Friday’s 9 p.m. semi.

Four players finished in double figures for the balanced Bulldogs – Bella Standish (18), Molly Moffat (14), Ellie Markus (11) and Jamison Philip (10). Standish, the game MVP, had 10 of hers before halftime.

The Spartans (20-7) struggled against Ellensburg’s press, turning the ball over 32 times for the game, and lagged 22-9 going into the second quarter. They had cut the margin to eight before that five-minute drought. It was 52-26 after three periods.

Bainbridge, paced by Anna Rowe’s 12 points, plays No. 4 W.F. West (24-3) Friday at 2 p.m. with a trophy on the line.

Wednesday, March 5 (Winner to Quarterfinals, Loser Out)

(6) Prosser  71, (11) Eatonville 24

Sophomore Herbie Wright scored 20 of her 26 points in the first half and was one rebound shy of a double-double as she drew MVP honors.

The Mustangs (22-5), who need one more victory to clinch a fourth straight state trophy, take on No. 5 Archbishop Murphy (23-2) Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Lay’lee Dixon, a 6-foot senior, had 10 points in the victory and four others scored six or more.

Eatonville (22-5), which piled up 30 turnovers, got 13 points from senior Bailey Andersen, but no one else contributed more than four.

(7) Columbia River 38, (10) Port Angeles 33

The River Rapids (21-4) started fast, then fizzled, but finished strong enough to advance.

They are pursuing their first trophy since placing seventh in the 1992 4A tournament – but the challenge gets tougher in Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal, where No. 1 Lynden (25-0) – the defending champ – awaits.

Columbia River led by as many as 14 points and was up 24-14 at the half, but was outscored 13-4 in the third quarter.

Gracie Glavin ended the scare with two clutch free throws, winding up with 10 points and the MVP tag. Teammate Marley Myers had 11.

Port Angeles (18-7) got double-doubles from Lindsey Smith (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Lexie Smith (11 and 10), but Teanna Clark was the only other player to score (six points).

(4) WF West 68, (12) North Mason 32

The Bearcats (24-2) rebounded from their first 2A loss of the season (53-41 to No. 5 Archbishop Murphy on Saturday) with a big first half and cruised into the quarterfinals. Their only other defeat came against Tahoma, a 4A playoff qualifier.

Julia Dalan, a 6-2 senior, poured in 22 of her 28 points before intermission and added 12 rebounds to land the MVP honor. Sophomores Dilyn Boeck (14 points) and Kaitlyn Chloupek (10) were the other key contributors.

W.F. West, which went on a 25-0 run in that dominant half, now faces unbeaten Deer Park (24-0), the No. 3 seed, Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The Stags took second in last year’s 1A tourney.

North Mason (16-9) got nearly half of its points from sophomore guard Taylor Madison, who had 15.

(1) Bainbridge 44, (9) Woodland 40 (OT)

Anna Rowe broke a 40-all tie with 19.2 seconds left in overtime, then MVP Bellah Ramirez followed with a steal and two free throws to put the finishing touches on the victory.

The Spartans (20-6) are trying to make the most of their first trip to state since 2008, but face a tall order in Thursday’s 9 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 2 Ellensburg (25-0).

Woodland (18-5), which had not been here since 2006, was up 31-26 after three quarters, but Bainbridge battled back and led 28-36 before a Lainey Haden steal lead to Kennedy Bockert bucket that sent the game to OT. Bockert finished with 15 points before fouling out.

Ramierez also logged 15 points, while Rowe just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
